Faithful readers of the blog may recall that I started a new book last June.
I am pleased to announce that it will be published next fall by Knopf, the finest publishing house in the United States.
The title is under wraps for now.
If you have been reading the blog, you know what it’s about.

Your book will become another bestseller because we’ll all go out and buy it!
A particularly vicious lie circulated by the “reformers” – that unions protect child sex abusers- will be exposed in 2013. When the Miramonte scandal and all the attendant lawsuits are adjudicated, the public will learn that this heinous crime against little children occurred because administrators:
hired the suspects without properly checking their backgrounds;
neglected to report suspected abuse to outside authorities, as required by law;
failed to report these individuals to the Department of Teacher Credentialing, as required by law. even after their arrests;
failed to supervise these people in any way; allowed them to teach behind locked doors where no one knew what they were doing;
gave the suspects “satisfactory” evaluations, after the most cursory classroom visits;
ignored complaints made by children, parents and teachers;
transferred these individuals from school to school and district to district, even after several serious complaints.
In short, the public will find that the scandal at Miramonte was another Penn State, but at the elementary level, with administrators trying to “handle” it themselves, instead of reporting it to authorities.
Hopefully the public will also learn that the unions try to protect the many innocent teachers, who are falsely accused each year. Likely child abusers come under the jurisdiction of the police and judicial systems and not the administration of a school district.

Linda, you have hit on an uncomfortable subject but one that has been forced on all of us who value a “better education for all.”
Unfortunately I am well aware through personal experience that you have hit on a reality that is too often twisted by the edubullies: teachers and aides and other support staff do NOT run schools—administrators do. And with the sincerest bow of respect to every administrator who does her/his job honorably and well, I know from firsthand experience that the best defense a child sex abuser in school has is for that person to ingratiate himself/herself with an incompetent administrator who should never have been put in the position of guiding, evaluating, managing and PROTECTING others.
Again, I do not want anyone to construe the above as maligning the many fine individuals in administrative positions who have been, and are, putting themselves at risk to “do the right thing.” That includes some courageous individuals who have posted on this very blog.
But difficult truths need to be spoken. Silence is consent.

Yes, of course, the vast majority of administrators, like teachers, are upstanding people who do the right thing. But when these abuses occur and are not reported, it’s almost always because of administrative cover-up. It’s very similar to child abuse cases in the Scouts, the church and Penn State.
Thanks for making the point that most administrators are honorable people. In my above comment, I was thinking mainly of John Deasy of Los Angeles Unified, who has shamefully tried to place the blame for Miramonte on “the unions” but a judge has already allowed lawsuits to proceed on the basis of much evidence of neglect on the part of administration.

there are no state dept of eds pushing for recess to be included in “time on learning”
