I live in SC and contacted them last Thursday and will do so again. The wait was long. The volunteer phone staffer was very nice. I plan to call again this week; I’ll vary the script a little bit but the underlying message will be the same. .

  I’ve been adding an email to the White House along with the phone call. My day (in Indiana) is Tuesday, and last week I wasn’t able to wait for the phone to open up. In any case…contacting them two ways won’t hurt…and the email is good if the phone lines are jammed.

Diane- thank you for posting the link to my call to action on Facebook. In the early morning hours of 12-2, Tom Watkins, the MI state superintendent who preceded Mike Flanagan responded to my post naming MI Rep. Lisa “Posthumus” Lyons on the Facebook Special Education Wall of Shame (along with Arne Duncan) for HB 6004, HB 5923 and her misguided pursuit to destroy public education during our lame-duck session. Tom went back and forth between me, several parents and former state representative Mary Roberts. He talked in circles and trying to perpetuate a myth that those of us in opposition are whining instead of proposing solutions. Tom tends to think way to highly of himself. I reminded him that he was the architect behind the MI special education rule that destroyed the ethics and integrity of our programs and services. It makes for a seriously comical reading. My initial post in response to Mr. Watkins is nothing short of a thorough history lesson on the impact of dictatorial leadership over special education in MI along with a roadmap to the foundational seeds of change for a truly viable “public education” system. Here is a simple solution.

Dissolve the U.S. Dept. of Ed. and all State Dept. of Ed.

Pay school taxes directly to the local school where students are enrolled and shift the responsability to the parents, local school administrators, and teachers.

Distribute federal and state funds originally allocated to US Dept. of Ed. and State Ed. Departments directly to schools.

Re-assign all government personell to schools.

Shrink teacher to student ratio to 1 to 20, include 1 teaching assistant per class.

Simplify. It was effective during colonial times as was the US constitution and still is.
