This November, the Denver school board will be up for grabs.
As you will see in this article, the privatization movement has decided to make a play to take control of the board. You know what they want.
If the Denver race plays out like the one in Los Angeles, billionaires and Wall Street hedge fund managers, along with Michelle Rhee’s StudentsFirst, will pour millions into the race. Expect big gifts from Rupert Murdoch and Philip Anschutz, maybe the Koch brothers. They will turn the schools and the children over to the free market.
If you care about public education, now is the time to stop the corporate takeover.
Maybe it’s because I work and at one-time lived for many a year in DC; or it’s age, wisdom, or my being a tad bit provincial – but aren’t most people offended when ‘outsiders’ come in a dictate what they believe to be best? Some may call it hubris, but I call it arrogance and I along with many locals are just plain offended. I’m surprised that others aren’t.
Denver was second in line behind JeffCo to pilot the Gates/Carnegie/Murdoch database called inBloom. Denver parents must be prepared to fight for their schools.
The Denver Post ran a weak article about inBloom today. However, it was confirmed that the Colorado Department of Education will hold a public meeting to discuss inBloom on May 16th.
Colorado parents must attend to let our voiced be heard! http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_23049220/jeffco-merging-school-it-programs-parents-worry-about

Linda,
As you know, there is a great difference between the children who count (the Obama, Emanuel, Christie children) and those that need to be counted.
In loom will give new meaning to the term “private school”.
InBloom will give new meaning to the term “private school”. (Because the people of power and privilege will never accept this invasion of privacy and data warehousing for their own kids)
Oh good, I get to see what Mike Johnston is made of. If he has a spine he denounce all this money. If not, he is just another cheap bought off shill.
I just read an article that the New York Post is in a lot of trouble for printing a picture of two guys at the Boston Marathon and saying they are being sought by the police, apparently not so, or at least not the ones the Police are looking for. One of the young men is 17 years old. I hope they sue Murdoch and his paper.
If you have any questions about who Johnston is, all you need to do is read here: https://dianeravitch.net/2013/02/13/michael-johnston-colorado-boy-wonder-of-corporate-reform/
Glad to hear his teacher licensure bill was shelved.
Thanks for that link.

Only because it’s Denver. Thought you might be interested in her POV.

If you want to help make a difference in offsetting the millionaires and billionaires in Denver, help out Andrea Merida (and head to her website andreamerida.com). Merida has been a leader fighting corporate “reform” on the Denver board, and is running for reelection. Big dollars will be spent against her, but grassroots help can make up the margin.
Thank you Diane for raising awareness of the Denver school board election this November. My candidacy began in early March and in this time I have met hundreds of community members from our diverse Denver neighborhoods. There is a consistent wish list from the people of Denver, including:
a. an authentic partnership between Denver Public Schools (DPS) and school communities
b. an elevated level of professionalism on the board to change the old attitudes that inhibit compromise
c. effective Board oversight over the DPS Administration and its financial choices
d. changes to the DPS choice process so that it is not just a lottery of scarce seats at popular schools
e. A renewed commitment to quality schools for every child, within walking distance to home
