In the world of science and medicine, vaccines have been one of the greatest achievements in history. Many diseases that afflicted humanity have been eradicated, thanks to vaccines.
When I was a child, my family worried about measles, mumps, chickenpox, and worst of all, polio. Now it’s rare to hear of anyone getting those diseases, although measles is making a comeback among unvaccinated children.
Only a crackpot would oppose vaccines whose safety and effectiveness have been demonstrated for decades.
We have at least two crackpots trying to discourage vaccinations. One is the nation’s top public health official, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has a long record as a vaccine opponent.
Now there is the Surgeon General of Florida, Dr. Joseph A. Lapado. He has decided to eliminate all vaccine requirements for school children.
Make no mistake. This is dangerous. This encourages the spread of deadly diseases among children.
Florida plans to become the first state to end all vaccine mandates, including for schoolchildren, rejecting a practice that public health experts have credited for decades with limiting the spread of infectious diseases.
Patricia Mazzini of The New York Times reported:
Dr. Joseph A. Ladapo, the Florida surgeon general, made the announcement on Wednesday alongside Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican. Mr. DeSantis rose to national prominence during the coronavirus pandemic, and over time he has espoused increasingly anti-vaccine views.
“Who am I to tell you what your child should put in their body?” Dr. Ladapo, a vocal denigrator of vaccines, said to applause during an event on Wednesday in Valrico, Fla., near Tampa. “Your body is a gift from God.”
He added that the administration would be “working to end” all vaccine mandates. “Every last one of them is wrong and drips with disdain and slavery,” Dr. Ladapo said.
Dr. Ladapo has faced repeated criticism from others in his field for his stances on public health. He allowed parents to choose whether to send unvaccinated children to school during a measles outbreak in Weston, Fla., in 2024, rejecting longstanding, evidence-based public health guidelines. The misinformation he spread about Covid vaccines prompted a public rebuke from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2023.
It is unclear what the process of undoing the state’s longstanding vaccine mandates might look like. Dr. Ladapo said the Florida Department of Health, the agency he oversees, would do away with rules promulgating vaccine mandates. State lawmakers “are going to have to make decisions” as well, Dr. Ladapo said. “That’s how this becomes possible.”
All 50 states have at least some vaccination requirements for children entering school, though all allow for medical exemptions, and most allow exemptions for religious or personal reasons. The number of students receiving exemptions has been increasing in recent years, and immunization rates have been falling, according to KFF, a health policy research group.
Mr. DeSantis, who appointed Dr. Ladapo as surgeon general in 2021, also announced the creation of a commission to align Florida with goals laid out by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President Trump’s secretary of Health and Human Services and a vocal vaccine skeptic. The commission will be headed by Casey DeSantis, the governor’s wife.
If Florida follows through on this nutty policy, the law should ban access to vaccines to the children of state officials who endorse this policy. No hypocrisy!

We have a saying at home. “Florida does stupid better than most,” and this latest decision confirms it. It is understood that teaching is like swimming in a petri dish, but this decision makes teaching a much more hazardous profession. But Florida doesn’t really seem to care much about its teachers, least of the governor who labels teachers “a bunch of pink-haired radicals.” By the way, what does getting a vaccine to protect oneself from disease have to do with slavery? This may be one of most ridiculous statements ever.

I live in South Florida & retired in 2020 as a Public HS teacher & I am so happy & relieved to be out of the classroom, especially after today’s insanity by the quacks Ladapo & DeSantis. Notice that Ladapo mentioned god several times in his statement. That is an under-the-radar issue that we all need to be worried about–the rise of Christian Nationalism & their meddling with our SECULAR government. Just as with abortion, birth control, stem-cell treatments, same-sex marriage, and now vaccines, religion is having TOO MUCH INFLUENCE on everyone else’s lives who are not believers, so we all have to stand up to these people who think their god allows them to do whatever they want & impose it on the rest of us. They are in the MINORITY & they need to be forced back “into the closet” where they can worship in their churches & homes, but that is it! If we have learned anything from history, it has always been the most fervent believers of any group, religious or other, who have achieved their goals of either disrupting the status quo or outright taking over because of that fervor & tenacity, which their opponents did not possess.

What will it take for MAGAts to recognize blood on the hands of the politicians they so adore? Sadly, it looks like they (and others) will be enduring some terrible personal tragedies before they come to realize that they voted for people who just don’t care when their policies are sure to injure and kill a lot of innocent victims.
But they should not be permitted to force us all to return to the Dark Ages, when before science and modern medicine, millions suffered and were killed by pestilence because they did not know better. We DO know better now, so there really is no excuse for this being allowed to happen!

And since when did most Christians in America start following the beliefs of Christian Scientists? Even many of them obtain vaccinations “when required by law.” But their “reliance on prayer and avoidance of medical treatment has been blamed for the deaths of adherents and their children. Between the 1880s and 1990s, several parents and others were prosecuted for, and in a few cases convicted of manslaughter or neglect.” So maybe this, too, needs to go through the courts?!

Isn’t it “lawmakers” who typically write and pass the laws requiring school vaccinations in each state? I’m trying to comprehend how a state’s Surgeon General (or Governor) has the power to just tear up and throw away laws they don’t like –and who could be sued for doing that.

BTW, When I worked as the Director of both non-profit and for profit private child care centers, every fall I had to submit a detailed report to my state on the status of every student’s vaccination record. So I know there are actual state laws that have been passed by lawmakers which require vaccinations.
I found Florida’s vaccination laws here: https://www.floridahealth.gov/programs-and-services/immunization/immunization-laws.html. I could find nothing indicating that lawmakers there voted to overturn those laws –though in red states like where the “Winter White House” is located, that’s certainly a possibility…

Every state–including Florida–has laws mandating that children must be vaccinated for certain diseases before they enter school. Most have religious exemptions.
For DeSantis to eliminate all vaccine mandates, the Legislature must change the law.
They might, if he has the power to muscle it through.
They might not, if they don’t want to be a national laughing stock.

Lyrics:
I see a clinic full of cynics
Who want to twist the peoples’ wrist
They’re watching every move we make
We’re all included on their list
The lunatics have taken over the asylum
The lunatics have taken over the asylum
“Go nuclear” the cowboy told us
And who am I to disagree
‘Cos when the madman flips the switch
The nuclear will go for me
The lunatics have taken over the asylum
The lunatics have taken over the asylum
I’ve seen the faces of starvation
But i just cannot see the point
‘Cos there’s so much food here today
That no one wants to take away
The lunatics have taken over the asylum
The lunatics have taken over the asylum
The lunatics have taken over the asylum – take away my right to choose
The lunatics have taken over the asylum – take away my point of view
The lunatics have taken over the asylum
The lunatics have taken over the asylum – take away my dignity
Take these things away from me
The lunatics have taken over the asylum
The lunatics have taken over the asylum – take away my family
Take away the right to speak
The lunatics have taken over the asylum take away my point of view
Take away my right to choose
