It won’t actually be available until October 10, but it’s now ready for pre-ordering on Amazon, possibly other sites as well, including your local bookstore. Support independent bookstores!
It is my memoirs, the story of my life. Growing up in Houston as third of eight children. College. Marriage. Career. Developing my views and values. Discovering that many of my convictions were wrong. Saying so. Intimate details of my personal life.
Stuff like that.
The publisher is Columbia University Press.

Will order when it becomes available. I just ordered a copy of “Wit and Wisdom …” no one mentioned before, sheesh.

You’re so productive, Diane. My mother in law is like this. She seems to write a book every few years.

It’s important to live the courage of one’s own convictions, and those beliefs often evolve with time and experience. I look forward to reading your latest work, and I am grateful for your contributions to education, history and activism.

You are unwavering in your commitment to truth—guided not by convenience or popularity, but by a clear-eyed ability to examine facts, analyze evidence, and let reason lead the way. It’s a rare quality in individuals, and all the more admirable because of it. You are a gift to educators everywhere, Diane, for standing up when corporate forces were tearing us down—for using your voice, your intellect, and your courage to defend those who devote their lives to teaching.

David,
That’s a beautiful comment. Much appreciated. I have some scars to show for the arrows aimed at me over the years.

As an avid reader, this is now top of the list! I am truly looking forward to reading this. Especially how you came to realize, understand and actually change many of your long held views on education, politics, etc. It’s something many of us struggle with. How could I have been wrong? Being a life long learner is the key to adjusting what we once held as truths. It’s like science, right? Although we trust science, the science can change as more information becomes available. I’m glad we can do the same without being too stubborn about it.

One of the truly beautiful character traits of the incomparable Diane Ravitch is that she is one of those rare people who does not cling to ideology in the fact of facts. This is a breathtakingly compelling, vivid, candid account of her personal and intellectual journey. Her “turn” was costly, personally and professionally, and took enormous bravery. This is a great, great, great, great read.

Just pre-ordered a copy. Looking forward to reading and learning from it. From amazon.com…
For many years, Diane Ravitch was among the country’s leading conservative thinkers on education. The cure for what ailed the school system was clear, she believed: high-stakes standardized testing, national standards, accountability, competition, charters, and vouchers. Then Ravitch saw what happened when these ideas were put into practice and recanted her long-held views. The problem was not bad teachers or failing schools, as conservatives claimed, but poverty. She denounced privatization as a hoax that did not help students and that harmed the public school system. She urged action to address the root causes of inequality.
In this passionate and timely memoir of her life’s work as a historian and advocate, Ravitch traces her ideological evolution. She recounts her personal and intellectual journey: her childhood in Houston, her years among the New York intelligentsia, her service in government, and her leftward turn. Ravitch shares how she came to hold conservative views and why she eventually abandoned them, exploring her switch from championing standards-based curriculum and standardized testing to arguing for greater investment in professional teachers and in public schools. Bringing together candid reflections with decades of research on education, Ravitch makes a powerful case for becoming, as she calls herself, “an activist on behalf of public schools.”

I wish you would support bookstores by seeing if your book could be preordered somewhere besides Amazon. I wonder if The Curious Cat Bookstore in Winsted (Winchester) CT would be interested in doing this. Or one in NYC. Thank you.

Kitty,
I’m certain you can pre-order the book at any bookstore.
I don’t mean to favor Amazon but to showcase the pending publication of the book.
