Scott Tomlinson, opinion writer for The Houston Chronicle, predicts that MAGA voters, especially in Texas, are soon to have an unwelcome surprise, thanks to the DOGE commission of Elon and Vivek. They voted for deep budget cuts. They voted to downsize the federal government, aka the “Deep State.”
He writes:
President-elect Donald Trump’s coalition splintered over visas for specially skilled workers in recent weeks, which turned especially ugly on Twitter, now known as X.
Elon Musk told critics of the program, including Steve Bannon and Tucker Carlson, to “Take a big step back and FUCK YOURSELF in the face. I will go to war on this issue the likes of which you cannot possibly comprehend.”
Solving the immigration crisis is relatively easy compared to balancing the budget, which Musk is supposed to be focusing on. When Trump voters find out what must be cut or whose taxes must rise to stop deficit spending, they’ll start grabbing pitchforks.
U.S. politicians from both parties have unintentionally experimented with the global economy. By running up huge deficits, they tested Modern Monetary Theory, an idea put forward by the left.
MMT was a hot topic during the Obama administration, with proponents arguing that economic powerhouses like the United States don’t have to worry about deficits. Governments can print as much money as they want through borrowing as long as inflation doesn’t rise.
Conventional macroeconomic theory recommends governments spend money, cut taxes and raise deficits during recessions. When the economy grows, governments should spend less, raise taxes and build surpluses. Governments should act as economic shock absorbers. We’re good at spending but not taxing.
Musk promises to cut federal spending by a third, or $2 trillion. The Texas Legislature ranks 10th in the nation for dependency on the federal government to pay for state spending, according to economists at Wallet Hub.
Federal funds pay for a third of the state budget, the Legislative Budget Board reports.
Imagine what would happen to Texas if the Legislature had to come up with $30 billion to make up for federal spending cuts?
Every dollar the federal government spends has a champion somewhere. If Musk tries to cut popular programs, the backlash over H1-B visas will seem like a walk in the park.

MMT was a response to the wholesale theft of 2008. The writer portrays it as a leftist economic theory when it’s really an antidote to calls for austerity.

An austerity that weakened the recovery and kept many in significant debt. Besides, I have heard arguments from MMT proponents that they agree inflation is a trigger that can’t be denied. Especially when it is driven by companies that use it as an excuse for excessive windfall.

I’ll bet I’m not the first to say this, and I know I’m not the first to think it: “Hey, Texas, karma’s a bitch.”

Remember the Tea Party? This is the Tea Party being co-opted by privatizers and caste-leaders on sterioids.
SO – Whether Trump duped voters AND congressmen or Trump got duped by Musk, we now have…
One aisle in the Capitol, one party on the left, three parties on the right.
On one side: DEMOCRATS
On the other side: REPUBLICANS, MAGA(s), & DOGE(s)
If the Democrats had any leadership (not seeing national or any in my state), they’d tell Bernie Sanders, the AOC crowd, and the traditional liberals to get their act together AND ADOPT THE DISILUSIONED REPUBLICANS.
Sort of Rockefeller Republicans (fiscally conservative, socially progressive but without playing into the whole wokeness trap they stepped into.
Let Elon and Trump duke it out between their flag-waving, evangelical, anti-anyone-who’s-different Magas and billionaire Doges. LURE the good old school conservatives to the Democrats with commitment to keep taxes low, to stop talking about what they hear as “welfare” topics, lay low on climate change, and zero in on NORTHERN middle America.

Seriously? You saw Kamala running around the country with the Squad and Bernie I must have missed that. Not at all what I saw. As she featured Darth Vader’s daughter Liz, in an appeal to those “conservative Republican woman”.
“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results“
They do not exist. They vote for abortion rights and the same Republicans who took those rights way . Race t(T)rumps all.

I guess I was too subtle. Or wordy.
The democrats need to stop being the party of wokeness and welfare. No matter what they do, an a “squad” or Bernie outburst reinforces it (note how many squad members (MO, NY…) went too far in democratic districts and were voted out).
Democrats need to REBRAND & REPLATFORM. Throw an elbow here and there to push back but change to narrative 180.
Middle class is not included in the billionaire boys plans or radar. Their taxes will NOT BE CUT and the public services they depend on will be cut with every privatization piece of legislation (ask states a few years into vouchers about their state funds).

Joel,
I have argued this point about Kamala again and again: she did not campaign as a black woman. She never mentioned being black or Indian or female except in response to questions. She did not play the racial or gender identity card.
Her campaign was not Woke.
The Trump ads portrayed her as Woke and for many voters it stuck.
But it didn’t come from her.
I will go to my grave convinced that Trump rigged the election, either by Musk or Putin or both.

Further : “I’ve seen it happen time after time. When the Democratic candidate allows himself to be put on the defensive and starts apologizing for the New Deal and the fair Deal, and says he really doesn’t believe in them, he is sure to lose. The people don’t want a phony Democrat. If it’s a choice between a genuine Republican, and a Republican in Democratic clothing, the people will choose the genuine article, every time; that is, they will take a Republican before they will a phony Democrat,”…
The Election was lost because Democrats started apologizing in late 2021; for the best economy since the early 60s (when America was great) . Apologizing for an economy recovering at a record pace. Unemployment under Biden was below 4% for the longest period (28 months ) since 1965. Inflation at 2.6% . While inflation was high in 2021-22. By 2023 wages were higher adjusted for inflation then they were in Jan 2020, before the Pandemic…
Of course you would not know that listening to the both sides bad news media with its Republican slant, where Democrats allowed Republicans to shape the narrative. And still are allowing that to happen. As Democrats still lament the best economy in years. Public opinion on an economy that had not changed from Oct to Nov. turned positive ….
Whether it was the Federal Reserve financial wellness poll or Pew or the WSJ . Polls consistently found that near 79 % said their finances were okay, their Local and State Economies just fine but the National Economy sucks. How can that be ? Did they travel the country and conduct more interviews than Studs Terkel….
Most Economists will tell you that the economy can not be shaped by media narratives. So the terrible Biden economy did not stop people from spending on non essentials like vacations, entertainment and toys at record levels. Travel by Plane or Car higher than ever. Holiday spending up 4% this season. But it certainly shaped their view of the National economy ….
Spineless Democrats allowed this to happen…
Somebody explain to me why Paul Krugman left the NY Times to do a Blog on Substack.( I am sure he has non disclosure agreement). Don’t bother. It is obvious: ….

I OTOH suggest Democrats make no major changes. Just better, sharper, clearer communication of policy, and lots of bragging about it—along with loudly calling out Reps who defeat it in the next two years.
We lost the popular vote by 1.5% in a race where the winner did not quite get half the votes, in a historical turnout 2nd only to the 2020 turnout. We lost the EC in the battleground states, and that’s where policy focus needs to be: how this policy benefits you. The battleground states are not MAGA strongholds whose govrs/ legislatures are racing each other for winner of the most-rw-ultra-conservative-socially-&-politically contest. They are not the states whose leaders scream “anti-woke” 24/7 and put hexes on The Squad, nor are they dismissive of Bernie Sanders.

Really big numbers frighten people . I don’t know about MMT. But inflation in Japan was 2.90% in 2024 .The Unemployment rate 2.5% The debt to GDP Ratio 256.3%The US Debt to GDP 123%. Wake me when it gets to 250% Seems we have ways to go. True debt to GDP goes down when people are working and PAYING TAXES, while Elon and the rest of oligarchy avoid their already reduced shares. As long as Elon only cuts programs and services in Tex-ass I am okay with it . Sadly it does not work that way.
