The Los Angeles Times has steadfastly criticized Trump as a “dangerous” and “dishonest” man. It is a liberal newspaper in a liberal state. Its editorial board intended to endorse native Californian Kamala Harris, as it did when she ran for Senate.
But on October 11, the owner of the newspaper, Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, ordered the editorial board not to issue any endorsement. The Trump campaign reacted with glee, casting the non-endorsement as a rejection of Harris by the editorial board.
The editor of the editorial board, Mariel Garza, resigned in protest. Veteran journalist Sewell Chan wrote the back story in The Columbia Journalism Review, where he is now editor after a long career that included The Los Angeles Times.
This is Garza’s resignation letter, addressed to Terry Tang, the editor of the paper.
Terry,
Ever since Dr. Soon-Shiong vetoed the editorial board’s plan to endorse Kamala Harris for president, I have been struggling with my feelings about the implications of our silence.
I told myself that presidential endorsements don’t really matter; that California was not ever going to vote for Trump; that no one would even notice; that we had written so many “Trump is unfit” editorials that it was as if we had endorsed her.
But the reality hit me like cold water Tuesday when the news rippled out about the decision not to endorse without so much as a comment from the LAT management, and Donald Trump turned it into an anti-Harris rip.
Of course it matters that the largest newspaper in the state—and one of the largest in the nation still—declined to endorse in a race this important. And it matters that we won’t even be straight with people about it.
It makes us look craven and hypocritical, maybe even a bit sexist and racist. How could we spend eight years railing against Trump and the danger his leadership poses to the country and then fail to endorse the perfectly decent Democrat challenger—who we previously endorsed for the US Senate?
The non-endorsement undermines the integrity of the editorial board and every single endorsement we make, down to school board races. People will justifiably wonder if each endorsement was a decision made by a group of journalists after extensive research and discussion, or through decree by the owner.
Seven years ago, the editorial board wrote this in its series about Donald Trump “Our Dishonest President”: “Men and women of conscience can no longer withhold judgment. Trump’s erratic nature and his impulsive, demagogic style endanger us all.”
I still believe that’s true.
In these dangerous times, staying silent isn’t just indifference, it is complicity. I’m standing up by stepping down from the editorial board. Please accept this as my formal resignation, effective immediately.
Mariel

Good for her. It’s crazy and terrible to have an owner undercut the independence of the editorial board. If I were a subscriber, I would cancel my subscription.

Unfortunately, boycott will not work, for the Trumpublican Party has destruction of both the Federal government and the free press as its primary objective. Note that 2025 suggests that the first order of business would be to fire all government operatives.
Even if Harris wins, massive power associated with obscene wealth will continue to be the opponent of freedom.

This post highlights what can happen when conservative billionaires purchase media companies. The editorial staff can get edited by the person that controls the purse strings.
The right has been making references to the “enemy from within” as though that enemy is those our own federal institutions. The enemy from within is the ultra-wealthy that has been allowed to keep so much wealth that many of they feel they should be able to control the government and ignore the voice of the people. If billionaires had been paying their fair share of taxes all along, they wouldn’t be so strong that they would feel they have the power to use their wealth as a weapon against democracy and the people, and our country would have better public services and infrastructure. As we see, billionaires with unchecked power and wealth can use their considerable resources against the rest of us.

They’ve been doing this for 53 years, starting with Lewis Powell’s call to arms in his “Attack on the American Free Enterprise System” memo of August 1971 where he declares the pathway to victory for the ruling class is to invest heavily in a political infrastructure, namely PR, thinktanks and PACs. They scored their hero in Ronald Reagan on November 4th, 1980 and then their god in Trump in 2016. They played the long game–and they’re about to win it all. Got your passport handy? You’re going to need it.

Newspaper endorsements have no meaningful impact on the outcome of presidential elections, and especially in a one party state like California. Most journalists in 2024 regard their primary job to be pushing preferred narratives for their favored politicians, not accurate reporting. That’s why Biden’s cognitive decline was not disclosed by almost all political reporters – opposing Trump was their top priority, not informing the public of important facts. This blog approves of that type of corruption.

Are you kidding me?! There was an almost constant din of negativity about Biden’s cognitive decline especially after his debate performance. Few people talked about Trump’s obvious mental struggles until Biden decided to pass the torch. Now we watch a daily cavalcade of bizarre pronouncements, made live by Trump, dismissed by die-hard Republican pundits. What is it that people see in Trump? Do they look for the collapse of our agricultural industries with the mass deportation of its workforce? No, native born Americans are not lining the highways waiting to step into those low paying, back breaking jobs. I could go on, but you have to be willfully blind to think that Trump is up to the job. He wasn’t the first time around.

This has been true of “news” in the United States for a long, long time, alas. Remember when Rupert Murdoch claimed that he would not interfere editorially at all if he was allowed to purchase the Wall Street Journal? What idiot would believe that?
The Wall Street Journal used to be the moderate business newspaper of record here.
Past tense.

Apparently the WaPo editorial board started doing presidential endorsements in 1976. They have never endorsed a Republican, although they declined to make an endorsement in 1988 (Bush v. Dukakis).
