   As a former runner and track/cross country coach I can honestly say that the 1500 and 100 final were two of the best races I’ve seen. More to come.

     That 100 was as close to a tie as you can get. Both these races saw the come from behind. In the 100, it struck me that the winner would have been going away with it if it had been 120 meters long. I would be interested in a race that awarded the prize to the top speed runner at any point is the race. Point a radar sensor at a runner and see how fast the runner can get the thing to register.

       Yes. The 4X400 was incredible. I think the narrative of the three Americans running on the tail of the two favorites throughout the 1500 is what drew me in. Not because they were Americans, but because the commentary up to the race focused solely on the two favorites and totally ignored the rest of the field. Even in the middle of the race the commentary was referring to how the eventual winner was running for bronze. Also, iat the risk of totally nerding out here, it’s rare that the Olympic 1500 is this fast. It’s typically slower and more tactical. I thought Ingebrigsten showed a lot of guts trying to run away from the field and the eventual medalists, and the fifth place American, showed incredible endurance to keep up the pace.

   I love to watch all these events, and I am amazed at things like the gymnastics and diving which arguably show a greater degree of athletic ability in total than the races. I would, however, not be able to defend my decision as one of the judges on judged events. Races have clear winners (usually). Judged events are too mushy for my love of the underdog attitude can take.

   I love the Olympics so much! And this is one of those reasons. Seeing the close races on foot, on bikes, in the pool, and on the mat, I get so wrapped up in the contest! My dog thinks something is wrong with me because I jump and cheer the entire time. But the determination and effort of these young athletes is awe inspiring. I wish there wasn’t so much emphasis on the medal counts. I know the Olympics pits nation against nation, but I love seeing all the athletes and their stories, from every country.

   Each year I try to watch a sport I haven’t seen or paid attention to in the past. This year was women’s water polo and those women are fit!

   Co-favorite, actually. Ingebritsen of Norway, who finished 4th, is the current world-record holder and was the defending Olympic champion. What it reminded me most, as an old guy, was Billy Mills’ winning the 10,000 meters in Tokyo. He caught and passed the two favorites in the final stretch.

   After watching the piece about the disrespect between the two favorites, it was so refreshing to watch the upset and see the two Americans win medals.
