Thank you to the best of our citizens, the immigrants who come to seek the American Dream, as our parents, grandparents, and ancestors did.
Six citizens died in the tragic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. All were immigrants. They were working on the bridge in the middle of the night, repairing potholes, when the bridge was hit by a massive tanker that had lost power. Think of them the next time someone starts spouting off about immigrants as criminals. Immigrants actually have a lower crime rate than native-born Americans.
Campbell Robertson of The New York Times wrote:
The body of the sixth and final victim who died in the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore was found on Tuesday, officials said, bringing to a close a difficult salvage mission after the country’s deadliest bridge collapse in more than a decade.
The victim, José Mynor López, 37, was a member of a work crew that had been filling potholes on the bridge when it was struck on March 26 by the Dali, a container ship on its way to Sri Lanka that apparently lost power after leaving the Port of Baltimore.
Five of his co-workers also died in the collapse, though it took six weeks to find all of the bodies, a daunting task that required divers to sift through mangled steel and crumbled concrete amid swift currents in murky water. Two other workers were rescued from the waters in the hours after the collapse.
All of the men who died were immigrants, from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico. Mr. López was from Guatemala and had come to Baltimore for a better life, his brother, Jovani López, told The New York Times. He was married with two young children, a boy and girl, Jovani López said.

Thank you to these amazing, noble people!!!

I decided to find a reputable primary source for this information since so many in the extreme MAGA cult right, won’t believe anything from the traditional media.
This study is from:
Stanford Institute for EconomicPolicy Research (SIEPR)
“Opponents of immigration often argue that immigrants drive up crime rates. But newly released research from Stanford economist Ran Abramitzky and his co-authors finds that hasn’t been the case in America for the last 140 years.” …
https://siepr.stanford.edu/news/mythical-tie-between-immigration-and-crime
Still, even evidence like this will not move many in the MAGA cult, since their minds do not exist in our universe, but in one where alternative facts rule their every thought.

Nor will the fact that most criminals don’t work the night shift at hard labor.

As I read this, I was reminded of a photo my Mexican son-in-law sent me yesterday. He is an independent truck driver who supports his family and sends monthly checks to his 85 year old father in Mexico. He was driving in Kansas. The picture he took showed two tornadoes on the eastern side of his truck. When he stopped for gas, the wind blew the roof off the gas station. Luckily it landed in the opposite side of his truck. Immigrants support their families and often put themselves in harm’s way to do so.

Our sympathies to these unfortunate people and their families. But this tragedy does not make a logical case for the pro-open borders sentiments of this blog’s commenters.

No one on this blog has ever argued in favor of “open borders.” Not I, not anyone who comments.
What I have said, along with others, is that hardworking immigrants should not be treated with hatred and contempt. I believe in legal immigration. I believe in respecting the dignity of every person, regardless of their color, religion, or national origin. My parents and grandparents were immigrants. Were yours, Wendy Watson, or are you descended from a Native American tribe? (We also treat Native Americans contemptuously and historically we have a shameful record.)

I favor legal immigration at higher levels than we have currently. What limit on immigration do you favor?
A poll conducted several years ago concluded that at least 500 million people in the third world would move to America if they could. Do you propose to allow all of them to come here? If not, then by the rules of this blog you are a racist, a xenophobe, a MAGA supporter, a Nazi, etc. (see Bob Shepherd’s comments)

Wendy Watson, you don’t know the rules of this blog. They are, 1. Don’t insult the host (me); 2. No conspiracy theories about Sandy Hook or 9/11; 3) No hate speech. There may be one or two more, but-there is no rule calling for open borders. Fascists can be called fascists. Racists can be called racists. Truth and evidence matter here.

Biden tried to make a deal on the border with the GOP. They refused to take up the issue. The GOP must prefer the chaos to solving the problem. The blame at this point goes to the intransigent GOP.

Aaah yes a deal on immigration. ”The bill would force the Department of Homeland Security to shutter the border if daily illegal crossings top 5,000 migrants on average or 8,500 in a single day. Unaccompanied minors from countries other than Mexico and Canada wouldn’t count toward that total.”
What a great deal!!!!

I don’t think should be any illegal immigrants. We should have a process for admitting immigrants that is fair, expeditious and allows them to work.
The Wall Street journal has an article about West Virginia. It desperately needs workers to keep the economy functioning but is vehemently opposed to immigrants. So restaurants limit their hours because they can’t find workers. Elderly people can’t find home health workers. The state has 1.8% immigrants. The good citizens of West Virginia are willing to let their economy falter rather than allow immigrants to work or even enter their state.
