Charlotte County in Florida is following Governor Ron DeSantis’s “Don’t Say Gay” law with zeal. School officials instructed school librarians to remove all books that have gay characters, even if the books have no sexual content. This is a deliberate effort to make gay people invisible, to erase them. Students may see gay characters in movies or television, but not in school.
Librarians in public schools in Charlotte County, Florida, were instructed by the school district superintendent to remove all books with LGBTQ characters or themes from school and classroom libraries.
Judd Legum at Popular Information reported:
Charlotte County school librarians sought guidance from the school district about how to apply an expansion of the Florida Parental Rights in Education Act, better known as the “Don’t Say Gay” law, to all grades. “Are we removing books from any school or media center, Prek-12 if a character has, for example, two mothers or because there is a gay best friend or a main character is gay?” the librarians asked. Charlotte County Superintendent Mark Vianello answered, “Yes.”
The guidance by Vianello and the school board’s attorney, Michael McKinley, was obtained by the Florida Freedom to Read Project (FFTRP) through a public records request and shared with Popular Information. FFTRP requested “electronic records of district and school decisions regarding classroom and library materials.” In response, FFTRP received a document memorializing a July 24 conversation between Vianello and district librarians, known in Florida as media specialists.
The guidance made clear that all books with LGBTQ characters are to be removed even if the book contained no sexually explicit content. The librarians asked if they could retain books in school and classroom libraries with LGBTQ characters “as long as they do not have explicit sex scenes or sexual descriptions and are not approaching ‘how to’ manuals for how to be an LGBTQ+ person.” Vianello responded, “No. Books with LBGTQ+ characters are not to be included in classroom libraries or school library media centers.”

I replied to the question you asked me in a prior thread.
As an additional note, I doubt that the Pope would use the word “conspiracy” for what he has warned about. It’s not a word I would use given that the Catholic Conferences describe their voter mobilization efforts and boast about their political wins at their sites, similar to what the Catholic Vote website does. An internet search of Becket Fund/Legal shows the cases that they are involved in.
Notre Dame Prof. Nicole Stelle Garnet is operating in the open to achieve religious charter schools.
The process by which jurists Scalia, Alito,
Barrett, Kavanaugh gained their appointments have been fodder for stories after-the-fact.
The word campaign is a better descriptor?
IMO, right wing Catholic, DeSantis, is part of a campaign. I don’t see a cloak and dagger component to it..

Why do kids really need to know about being gay? They came from a man and a women, the 2% or less came from adoption from same sex couples. Kids cannot drink u til a certain age, tattoo a certain age, vote a certain age. They need to be kids, forget this bullshit ideology. When they are teenagers and brains are forming much more then we can talk. Before high school keep this crap out all lgbtq bullshit out.

Or to put it another way, why do children need to be exposed to any idea I personally do not agree with?

It has nothing to do with ideology, it is reality. Some of these kids come from families with two moms or two dads. They already know what gay means, and no one has any business telling these families what their kids, or anyone else’s kids can and cannot read. There are many different kinds of families, and we marginalize and dishonor those families with demeaning choices made by politicians who excel in pushing their own cruel agenda. Make decisions for your own family, not mine. You do not have that right.

Exactly, that is why I do not want gay teachers pushing this on families or books from schools. Let me handle my family and make decisions, teachers need to teach , not indoctrinate or confuse kids about gender and sex.

He might be afraid that if he is exposed as an extremist right-wing bigot, he might lose his job. A lot of employers have zero tolerance for racism and anti-LGBTQX bigotry these days.
But this is not surprising. Repugnicans were always a) cowards and b) the first to call for use of state violence (war, the death penalty, violence against immigrants and protesters). Their extreme anger and support for state violence comes from their underlying fear of the Other–of anyone not white, male, straight, and uneducated.

Better Dead than Red!
Why do kids really need to know about having red hair? Fewer than 2% of people have red hair, and these all have the devil in them. Remember what you were taught about redheads and their tempers? Kids cannot drink until they are of a certain age, tattoo until they are of a certain age, vote until they are of a certain age. They need to be kids. Forget this bullshit ideology. When they are teenagers and their brains are better formed, then we can talk about signing them up to the Special Youth League against Red-Haired Imposter Blondes. Before high school, keep this pro-red hair bullshit out. Let them learn to admire real blonde, blue-eyed, light-skinned Nordics not touched by the devil’s hue! Is Trump’s hair red? No. Case closed.

Perhaps you are being facetious. If not, I direct you to the posted article. The Charlotte County policy applies through 12th grade, by which time students are nearly out of their teens. “Can we talk” about such books for age 14-18?

Students may see gay characters in movies or television (or be living just down the street from real, live gay people), but not in school.
