Justin Parmenter, an NBCT-certified teacher in North Carolina, has been posting interesting facts on Twitter (X) about religious schools in North Carolina that accept voucher students. That is, the public is paying most or all of their tuition.
Here is the latest:
NC requires public school teachers to hold a license.
Durham, NC’s Mt. Zion Christian Acad receives public $ for vouchers. They require their teachers to demonstrate their relationship w/the Holy Spirit by speaking in tongues.
A license is optional. #nced #ncpol #ncga

I wonder if this counts as foreign language instruction. Sadly, nothing happening in my state of NC surprises me, and this is why we keep fighing the good fight.

I’ve heard about Speaking in Tongues for most of my life but never knew exactly what that meant.
Here’s what I just learned: “Speak in an unknown language during religious worship, regarded as one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.”
Sounds to me like the perfect scam. Since no one else knows that unknown language how can anyone claim the speaker isn’t “Speaking in Tongues.”
Evidently God already thought of the risk of using Speaking in Tongues to scam and fool others.
Corinthians 14:27-28 ESV
If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret. But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God.

Sadly, the good people of the state are paying for this as “education.” Politicians jump all over public schools for low test scores while they defund the public schools to pay for this side show. What a misuse of public money!

Uuummm. Okay, that’s ridiculous.
I speak English and Greek, plus a moderate amount of Spanish, French, and Italian. Does that count as speaking in tongues?

It should. . .
. . . but only if you speak them all at once!

I think it only qualifies if it’s a language nobody understands; which brings to mind the question, “If no one understands it, is it a language?”

“Tongues,” aka glossolalia, are paralinguistic vocalizations but not language. They happen in ecstatic trance states. Like other nonlanguage paralinguistic vocalizations–cries, shouts, whimpers, and so on–they express emotion but are not made up of independent, meaningful lexemes organized truly syntactically. The various paralinguistic elements of tongues are constructed from paralinguistic components and patterns imitating the syntactic and phonological forms of the speaker’s native language or languages, and thus are NOT some sort of foreign or mystical language (e.g., the language of angels).

If the school teaches what they’re required to in terms of reading, writing, and arithmetic, why care? Just don’t send your child there if you disagree. Public schools have added numerous things to the curriculum that religious people don’t care for so it seems vouchers are a fair solution for everyone to find what’s important to them. I’m confused by the hate. If you get to control or influence what your child learns, why try to prevent other parents the same right?

Hollie,
If a family wants their children to believe in Satan, should government money follow that child to the School of the Satanic Arts?
