The National Education Policy Center announced that it would no longer post on Twitter, nor would it open an account on Threads. I refuse to refer to Twitter as X because is a letter, not a name. NEPC is a trustworthy source of research about education.
I have faced the same dilemma. I have opened an account on several of the alternative social media sites but stayed with Twitter because I have almost 150,000 followers there. When they retweet, my posts go further.
This is what NEPC announced:
The decision to close the @NEPCtweet account was straightforward but not easy.
We truly valued NEPC’s 13 years on Twitter, sharing our work with our 7,500 followers and engaging in often-interesting discussions. Yet after the company’s change in ownership and shift in policies, our continued presence on Twitter (now “X”) became impossible. Disinformation and conspiracy theories, as well as bigotries of all sorts, have moved from tolerated to celebrated.
NEPC cannot, at this point, find a sensible alternative. We may still decide to open a Mastodon or Bluesky account, but their current limited reach and other constraints mean that active participation will have minimal benefits.
Meta’s new platform, Threads, presents a unique set of concerns. Because Threads is attached to Instagram, the Meta privacy policy is the Threads privacy policy. And it’s a “privacy nightmare”–the privacy policy is so weak that Meta can’t launch Threads in the EU.
We remain concerned that Threads and other Meta platforms are used by school-aged children and accordingly raise the sorts of privacy harms that NEPC has long investigated and condemned. NEPC has, for example, recently published analyses of the Summit Learning Platform and the Along platform, both of which are associated with Meta and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.
NEPC is committed to working with top scholars to provide a bridge between high-quality research and public deliberations about education policy and practice. Our mission statement reads in part: We are guided by the belief that the democratic governance of public education is strengthened when policies are based on sound evidence and support a multiracial society that is inclusive, kind, and just. The social platform now known as “X” is the antithesis of these values.

I hear you Diane. And what was Mr. Musk’s kid’s names? Egads! Most importantly, I want to my blog friends here to know that I am thinking about you on the East Coast (Bob “the Legend”) and others. I have some dear friends from high school who live in Tampa and surrounding areas. How about that “no climate change?” In CA, we are on another Spare the Air Day because of wildfire smoke. Blessings to all.

Thank you. We were very lucky here in St. Pete/Tampa. Not so much north of us.

Try one of the Fediverse or Mastodon sites. I use Mathstodon because it has nice facilities for math folk.

We are doing the same Diane. LinkedIn has become our go to media and still on FB–and then our major media lists. Hope all is as well as can be expected. We are preparing for a govt shutdown almost certain the end of September. Now o e of the freedom caucus demands is money for a Biden impeachment. Thanks to the Senate for their more relative sanity. Always the best,
Arnie

I disagree. That is what they want… silence our voices. We have effectively used THEIR media for free to get our message out. Scoundrels run all of these corporations. Stay on Twitter, Diane. Subvert them by using them. Don’t cede the platform to Donald Trump.

Thanks, Carol. I don’t like to be in the company of racists, Nazis, and conspiracy theorists but I intend to stay on Twitter. It’s the biggest megaphone.

I block the racists. And I do not follow the nuts. I am, for the most part, in the company of people who care about public schools. That being said, we also need to know what they are saying and push back. Too many good people are easily offended and appalled. Others do not see what is happening. The Right is clever, ruthless, and tough. We need to be tougher. We need to meet them where they are. Or we are done.

Thank you for taking a stand. I agree with it.

Not to overwhelm the search, but I would suggest checking out Spoutible. It is still young and developing, but is a bit of an upstart. I think the key question is, “Where is your primary audience?” I have noticed a decidedly progressive audience on Spoutible, with an ethos against trolling and corporate infiltration. One of my biggest beefs with the existing players (FB, Twit, etc.) is that their primary concern is making cash off of your information which in turn spawns algorithms that end up promoting agendas and hate because of the outrage fueled clicks. I’m not getting that on Spoutible. At least so far. I checked out a couple of the other options, Mastodon is interesting but unintuitive, and a few others that just didn’t work well. Spoutible is simple and the actual builder Chris Bouzey, is an active participant (unlike Musk who’s ‘legendary’ status as an engineer etc. is largely a fiction that he bankrolled … founder of Tesla my Aunt Fannie. Just because you have money doesn’t make you brilliant. Rather it makes you very lucky!)
Anyway, give Spoutible a look. The more that important folks such as yourself join, the more the audience will grow.

Thank you so much for this breath of fresh air and good news. I am not on social media and resist/delete ‘threaded’ communications. This comes from a public school education advocate and retired NBPTS public school teacher (Early and Middle Childhood Music). I am grateful for your voice and your insights. All best, Kathleen
