A few days ago, the New York Times published a description of the policies envisioned by Trump’s inner circle. The goals is to take control of independent agencies and to strip the independence of federal civil servants. Thom Hartmann wrote here about those plans and their danger to democracy.
Earlier this week, The New York Times published a partial exposé of Trump’s plans for his second administration. It involved basically turning America into Russia or Hungary, where the president becomes the singular center of federal power, eclipsing Congress and the Courts.
For example, the Times writes:
For example, the Times writes:
“Mr. Trump intends to bring independent agencies — like the Federal Communications Commission, which makes and enforces rules for television and internet companies, and the Federal Trade Commission, which enforces various antitrust and other consumer protection rules against businesses — under direct presidential control.”
How would this play out? The FCC has power over the internet, as well as all broadcast media in America; it’s how the Trump administration killed Net Neutrality and gave the giant Internet Service Providers (ISPs) the legal right to track everything you do and sayon the web right down to the last keystroke of your posts and your every email.
Thus, President Trump could mandate that any media critical of him — including online media like Daily Kos, Raw Story, or Common Dreams— must be heavily “regulated,” just like in Russia and Hungary. And he could do this in the first weeks of his presidency, to tamp down the ability to organize protests around his other fascist policies.
Taking over the Federal Trade Commission would allow him to do all kinds of favors for his CEO and billionaire backers, bringing industry behind his Fascism, just as happened in the early years of Nazi Germany.
In addition, Trump has already proclaimed his intention to turn the FBI, IRS, and DOJ into weapons against his political enemies. Just like Putin and Orbán.
Lest you think Trump doesn’t have plans to take on the “fake news” media and “liberals” he regularly lambasts, consider what he reposted on his Nazi-infested social media site just three days ago:
“If you fuck around with us, if you do something bad to us, we are going to do things to you that have never been done before.”
They have been done before, just not here in the US.
And the fact that not one single currently elected Republican stood up and called this fascist rhetoric what it is tells us that the next GOP president need not be Trump for this nation to fall from democracy to fascism: strongman authoritarianism is now the governance model the Republican Party and the “conservative” movement have fully embraced.

Well I sure am relieved that the Democrats are running the strongest possible candidate to defeat Trump.

Regardless of his age, Biden may be the best president this country has had for decades. While discrimination ageism will play a roll for some voters, if it boils down to Biden vs Trump (there only what? three years apart in age), most voters will vote against Trump, not for Biden, even though Biden will get their votes.
A younger looking democratic presidential candidate does not mean a better candidate than the one we already have.
I for one, am impressed with Biden’s overall performance considering the obstructionism from the broken almost fascist GOP.
The United States mostly ignores us older citizens and worships youth but youth often doesn’t offer the best candidates with the skills and experience necessary to survive in the toxic political environment of today.

Keep believing that if you want, but don’t act shocked when young people, people of color and poor people stay home in droves. You can’t send billions for a proxy war while people at home are choosing among rent, food or meds and expect people to vote for you. I wish you luck.

I think Biden has been an excellent president, especially considering that his margin in the Senate is paper-thin, he can’t count on Manchin or Sinema, and the GOP has turned into a party led by QAnon crazies.

I agree that he’s been a good president on balance, but his age and his mental capacity concern me. I will still vote for him (although it doesn’t matter since I live in New York), but I worry.

I was GOP from 1963 to 2015. The current GOP is NOT conservative nor are they Republican. They, along with Trump have hijacked the former Republican Party. They are using that platform to turn Democratic, people powered American into an Autocracy so Trump can feed his narcissism and so that those who “show their love and pseudo loyalty” to him can make him dance like a organ grinders monkey. We cannot elect anyone who claims to be GOP. As a former GOP / compassionate conservative, I’m not nuts about excessive liberalism, but I know that electing a GOP will result in destruction of America as we know it. They do not have the American People in their sights for support.

This is a frightening article that every elected Democrat should read. Hartmann is sounding the alarm, but his assertions could become a reality if the GOP win the election. When I watch what is happening in Israel, I am concerned we could follow in their footsteps. FDR met the fascist challenge head on, and that is what Democrats must do. They need to confront the GOP fascist threat head on and fight back. Democrats need to realize in order to win, they need to answer the right and refute the lies at every opportunity. Democracy depends on it. As Hartmann states, Democrats need to stop acting like the GOP are their esteemed friends. The right are rogue vandals that want to steal our democracy. Trump and DeSantis may be the worst of them, but there are plenty more opportunistic extremists waiting in the wings to takeover.

Love Tom Hartmann.
Despise that DUMPSTER, who works for Putin and rubles. This horrible man, who I call the DUMPSTER, will destroy any semblance of democracy and fairness if he is in charge. He lies, steals, grabs women by the ***** and says he can because he is rich and no one can stop him.
Well, it’s about time this country stands behind our Constitution and sends that DUMPSTER to JAIL. He is a most reprehensible, disgusting, cheating, lying SOB.

Politicized right wing Catholics who write in media are gaslighting Americans. Hugh Hewitt who self-describes as a cradle Catholic and current elder in the Presbyterian church wrote in WaPo, you can’t put a religious lens on our political differences.
The New Republic (12-8-2021) discussed Nate Hochman whose firing from the DeSantis’ campaign was reported today. “DeSantis campaign fires speechwriter who promoted video with Nazi imagery.”
From, “The Illiberal Upstarts Trying to Reinvent the American Right (TNR)…Nate told me that some of his concern about taking the final step of being confirmed (in the Catholic Church) is that he feels like there’s a lot of pressure to do it that isn’t motivated by God, his theological commitment, as much as it is by his career, because Catholicism has its hooks in the right wing elites,….”
The “Illiberal Upstarts…almost all of them are right wing Catholics…(they want) a shift to this sort of hierarchical Catholic-inspired culture war stuff.”
A reminder- American taxpayers have made Catholic organizations the nation’s 3rd largest employer.

This is about as anti-American as you can get. Before there were Founders and Framers and even Originalists, there was a revolution. Why? Because of denial of freedom of speech and press by a King.
The comparison of his and their actions (U.S. and a couple of southern states) to what evolved in Germany in 1938 is THE cautionary tale. But it goes back to one of the causes of the leaving England in the first place and of the American Revolution.
250 years later, this Republican Party (unlike their predecessors and in spite of their supposed love for the 13 star flag and the Constitution) are ok going back to the same unicameral form of government.

Doing “more for Israel” does not measure whether a person has fascist tendencies. I’m a Jew and I think Trump is a loathsome rapist and con man. As a New Yorker, I have watched him for decades. He’s a shallow party boy who despises people like you, Josh. He thinks you are trailer trash.
