The New York Times describes a frightening plan developed by Donald Trump’s administration-in-waiting to consolidate power in the President’s hands. The plan would give the President direct control of independent agencies. Trump believes he didn’t accomplish his goals because the “deep state” restrained him.
Donald J. Trump and his allies are planning a sweeping expansion of presidential power over the machinery of government if voters return him to the White House in 2025, reshaping the structure of the executive branch to concentrate far greater authority directly in his hands.
Their plans to centralize more power in the Oval Office stretch far beyond the former president’s recent remarks that he would order a criminal investigation into his political rival, President Biden, signaling his intent to end the post-Watergate norm of Justice Department independence from White House political control.
Mr. Trump and his associates have a broader goal: to alter the balance of power by increasing the president’s authority over every part of the federal government that now operates, by either law or tradition, with any measure of independence from political interference by the White House, according to a review of his campaign policy proposals and interviews with people close to him.
Mr. Trump intends to bring independent agencies — like the Federal Communications Commission, which makes and enforces rules for television and internet companies, and the Federal Trade Commission, which enforces various antitrust and other consumer protection rules against businesses — under direct presidential control.
In addition, every federal employee would serve at the pleasure of the President.
He intends to strip employment protectionsfrom tens of thousands of career civil servants, making it easier to replace them if they are deemed obstacles to his agenda. And he plans to scour the intelligence agencies, the State Department and the defense bureaucracies to remove officials he has vilified as “the sick political class that hates our country…”
Some elements of the plans had been floated when Mr. Trump was in office but were impeded by internal concerns that they would be unworkable and could lead to setbacks. And for some veterans of Mr. Trump’s turbulent White House who came to question his fitness for leadership, the prospect of removing guardrails and centralizing even greater power over government directly in his hands sounded like a recipe for mayhem.
“It would be chaotic,” said John F. Kelly, Mr. Trump’s second White House chief of staff. “It just simply would be chaotic, because he’d continually be trying to exceed his authority but the sycophants would go along with it. It would be a nonstop gunfight with the Congress and the courts.”
The agenda being pursued has deep roots in the decades-long effort by conservative legal thinkers to undercut what has become known as the administrative state — agencies that enact regulations aimed at keeping the air and water clean and food, drugs and consumer products safe, but that cut into business profits.

Donnie wants to play real dictator like the big boys he so admires.

And it’s continued since then. So I get it.
I’ve wanted serious change, as well. Still do. But, sorry: it ain’t coming from Donald Trump. He’s in it for himself. As always. I’m from
NYC. This is nothing new. This latest about his wanting to expand his powers, if elected, is as bright red a flag as you’re ever going to get.
I honestly mean no ill will. No sarcasm. I’m asking any supporter of the man to consider:
1) Do you want this degree of power consolidated into the office of the Presidency? For any one person?Separation of powers has always been one of the bedrock principles of our nation.
Please try to imagine Biden pulling the same stunt, tomorrow: “I’ve expanded my powers because the House is stymying my agenda”
2) Do you want to move away from the NATO alliance and replace it with Russia and other dictatorships?

Jimmy Carter was and is in many ways a truly great man. But this same guy’s administration, with his knowledge, was spraying marijuana fields with paraquat, an extremely toxic substance that would cause end consumers of the product, mostly young people, to die from ruptured lungs and kidney and liver failure or, later on, to develop Parkinson’s disease. So, there he was, protecting kids from imagined negative effects of marijuana by killing or crippling them. EVEN SOMEONE AS GOOD AS CARTER WAS AND IS was capable of something this stupid and disastrous.

The Media (mainstream and not) has a huge influence, here.
Looking at the pro Trump comments on this thread is all you need to know. The information that they’re reading, seeing, and hearing is the polar opposite of what those who oppose him receive (myself included).
And, just as I won’t watch FOX or any of the MAGA shows; his followers won’t be checking out those on the other side, anytime soon. Lines are drawn.
Maybe MAGA loves Trump and what they think he achieved or WANTS to achieve. But honestly:
1) Do you want this degree of power consolidated into the office of the Presidency? For any one person?Separation of powers has always been one of the bedrock principles of our nation.
2) Do you want to move away from the NATO alliance and replace it with Russia and other dictatorships?

“It’s not tRump… it’s everyone who’s behind him.” YES–like many of our neighbors and local officials.
They take voting much more seriously than Democrats and others on the Left. They’ve been gerrymandering for decades and working to get lower level conservative judges and officials in office to feed the upper levels and thus enable their takeover of government
Since trump, they’ve been harassing and sowing doubt about election workers, officials, teachers and others, including death threats.
As a result, I don’t agree with the view that trump’s followers are reduced in numbers and can’t elect him in 2024, as Diane and Bob wrote a few days ago in another post. That’s what people said in 2016.
HOWEVER, it is fascinating to consider all those Project 2025 Conservative organizations that Hannah mentioned. I wonder what’s going on behind the scenes? Are THEY in full support of trump, or are they scheming to stop him, lest he lose? Can they influence their followers?

Thanks for the link to Project 2025. I speculate it reflects the ongoing alliance of the religious right (the most politically powerful segment is Catholic) and Koch.
The 2025 sponsors listed at the site include EPPC (heavily Catholic) and Teneo, along with lots of Koch network groups. Connecticut Mirror posted about Teneo, a Leonard Leo operation (he’s right wing Catholic with 9 kids). Members associated with Teneo, according to ProPublica, include JD Vance who converted to Catholicism in 2019, Elise Stefanik, a right wing daughter of privilege who is right wing Catholic and who critics have claimed is racist, Josh Hawley who attended a Catholic high school, Nebraska’s attorney general who attended a Jesuit high school, Virginia’s solicitor General, whose parents and brother attended Catholic schools and DeSantis who was raised Catholic.
The book sold at Project 2025 is similar to other conservative publications. Male writers significantly outnumber female writers. In the book, it looks like about 75% male and 25% female authors.

Thanks for the reply, Mike.
Although I’m a registered Democrat, I’ll vote Republican. Whoever is best qualified.
I didn’t liked the transition away from paper ballots, either. Old school but more: Smart. From what I understand, though, they do still hold on to the hard copy scanned documents (I’ll go ballistic if they discontinue that) and did hand count them in the contested states. Or am I wrong about that?Honest question.
There’s no doubt in my mind that Trump has enough dirt in his closet to take down a LOT of very famous, wealthy, and influential people. And I’ve got no illusions as to just how much power and influence these people have. It’s been going on for a very very long time.
I get off the bus when Trump tells us he can change all that. He’s an active part of that world. He profits off of it. It’s his livelihood and has been for a very long time. The idea of expanding his powers as President, should he be re-elected, puts me off in a huge way. I’d call for Biden’s impeachment if he did the same. Not good.
I want campaign finance reform so we can all cut through the bs and know who we’re really voting for. But in the meantime, we’ve got some decisions to make.
