Todd Legum and Tesnim Zekeria write here about a school board in Pennsylvania that hired a pricey consultant to improve the district’s curriculum. The consultant had scant experience in his field, but that is no barrier these days to telling teachers what to teach. He did have one important credential: he was a graduate of Hillsdale College, the bastion of Christian conservatism in education. The article appears on the blog Popular Information. Please open the link to read the full post.
They begin:
On June 20, educational consultant Jordan Adams delivered a much-anticipated presentation to the Pennridge School Board, revealing his recommended changes to the Eastern Pennsylvania school district’s social studies curriculum. Adams, the founder of Vermilion Education, appeared via Zoom. The curriculum experts who work for the district recommended that first grade social studies focus on “Rules and Responsibilities,” “Geography,” and “Important People and Places.” Adams instead proposed that 6- and 7-year-olds learn “American History: 1492-1787” and “World History: Ancient Near East.”
In his presentation, first reported by the Bucks County Beacon, Adams did not discuss how teachers could provide instruction on nearly 300 years of American history to students still learning to read and tie their shoes. Nor did Adams explain why his “chronological” approach was superior to the school district’s proposed curriculum. Adams spent less than 90 seconds covering his proposal to completely restructure social studies for Grades 1 through 5, before moving on to his recommendations for older students.
Popular Information asked Adams about his process for curriculum development and how he came to the conclusion that his proposed changes would be beneficial to first graders and other students. Adams responded that he was asked to provide “a high-level overview” and his recommendations “aim to provide students with a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of American and world history and civics, reflective of historical figures, ideas, and events that have had an outsized impact on the world today….”
It was an unusual approach for a consultant the school district is paying thousands of dollars to provide guidance. Notably, Adams, who is 31, does not have any experience developing curricula for public schools. According to Adams, he launched his company, Vermilion Education, in March. (It was formally incorporated in December 2022.) Under questioning from Pennridge School Board member Ronald Wurz, Adams admitted that Pennridge was Vermilion Education’s only public school client. (Asked if he has any other clients, Adams said that he is “not at liberty to share about ongoing or potential work with other clients.”)
In an interview, Wurz told Popular Information that Adams’ presentation was “amateurish,” “horrible,” and reflected “a total lack of preparation.” Wurz was particularly disturbed that Adams has already billed the district $7500 — the cost of 60 hours of work under the contract — to craft his recommendations.
Adams, who appears to have deleted his LinkedIn profile, does not hold any degrees in education. In 2013, Adams received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Hillsdale College, a private Christian institution known for its right-wing ideology. In 2016, Adams received a master’s degree in humanities from the University of Dallas, another private conservative school. Adams later returned to Hillsdale College as an employee, where he promoted a K-12 curriculum developed by the college, known as the 1776 curriculum, that is favored by right-wing activists…
The contract was added to the agenda less than 48 hours before the meeting by board member Jordan Blomgren. It drew immediate objections from Superintendent David Bolton. In an email, Bolton noted that there was no money budgeted for the contract, no one from the school district had reviewed the contract, and no one involved in developing the curriculum for Pennridge schools was consulted. Bolton’s concerns were ignored by a majority of the board, who voted to approve the contract on a 5-4 vote.
Dissident board members fear that Adams has been hired to implant the “Hillsdale curriculum” into their schools, without the involvement of the district’s professional staff.

Most readers here are undoubtedly intimately familiar with Race to the Flop, but for any uninitiated, it was a program put forward by Obama’s education secretary (Dumbkin) that held out the carrot of tens or even hundreds of millions in grants to states that met certain criteria. To even be considered, states had to adopt a set of standards (Common Core just happened to be convenient at the time) AND agree to use student growth* (defined by test scores) in the evaluation of teachers. The latter was effectively a mandate to use VAM (a form of Econometricks) as part of teacher evaluation (eg, as advised by economists Eric Hanushek and Raj Chetty)
*To even qualify for “The Race”, according to Dumbkins DOE, states had to “implement rigorous, transparent, and fair evaluation systems for teachers and principals that… take into account data on student growth… as a significant factor” ( based at least partially on “a student’s score on the State’s assessments under the ESEA”)

The reality is that the self styled computer “scientists”* have little idea how generative bots like ChatGPT , DALL-e and Stable Diffusion actually work —other than in very broad general terms: the bots predict the probable way to complete a given pattern based on statistical analysis of patterns found in training datasets. Not incidentally, The datasets are often scraped from copyrighted works, effectively pirated from millions of painters, authors, photographers , programmers and other artists without their permission and without compensation. The folks who are doing this are completely unethical and most likely criminal.
What that means is the “scientists” also have little idea what the end result of feeding them their own output will be — to say nothing of the overall impact of these bots on humanity.
they are not real scientists because they don’t approach things in a scientific manner. Neural net deep learning is basically black box voodoo, not science.

There’s a new documentary on Netflix dealing with autonomous, AI-driven weapons. One part of it consists of excerpts from an interview with a data guy who works in the pharmaceutical industry. He talks about an AI program that he and others developed to generate, automatically, tens of thousands of possible molecules for treating diseases and disorders. Built into the AI was a setting for nontoxicity. 0 = nontoxic.
Well, guess what? They did a little experiment and changed the 0 to a 1.
1 = toxic
Overnight, the program generated formulae for 40,000 highly toxic new molecules. 40,000 recipes for new chemical weapons.
AI at work.

It doesn’t take a genius to feed data into a statistical analysis package (basically what a deep learning neural net program is), turn the crank and then see what is output.
No science required.
Unfortunately, far too many computer “scientists” these days are little more than glorified crank turners.

Anyone with a few thousand lines of readily available neural network code, millions of dollars in GPUs, gazigabytes of pirated training data and an unlimited electricity budget could produce one of these bots.
The fact that one has to have considerable resources (the latter 3 requirements) is the only reason there are only a handful of these bots at this point.
Which , of course, means that companies likeMicrosoft (which basically owns OoenAI) Google and Facebook dominate the market and will continue to dominate for years to come.

Not incidentally, would you put an AI in charge of a safety or security critical task (driving a car, flying an airplane, operating a nuclear power plant, operating the national power grid, deciding to launch nuclear missiles, operating an x ray machine, etc) if you didn’t understand how it worked (or at least were not confident that the creator knew how it worked)?
That’s precisely what the creators of neural net deep learning AIs are proposing

Yes. And the temptation will be enormous. Look at the issue of cluster bombs right now. For months now, NATO has railed against the use of cluster munitions in Ukraine by Russia. Many NATO countries have banned them. That creates precedent in international law generally. But now, here we are. Russia has a lot of cannon fodder dug into trenches on a number of fronts in Ukraine, and Ukraine is making slow progress against these. It’s a World War II stalemate sort of situation. And one answer to this stalemate is to use cluster munitions to blow the holy random hell out of those entrenched positions, terrorizing the soldiers there into retreat. And so, we’ve made the decision to send cluster munitions to Ukraine.
Name ONE TIME, EVER, when people have invented a horrific technology and then said, oh, that’s so terrible, let’s never use it.

I would not even trust that the zero setting produced truly nontoxic stuff.
As I said, these folks have no idea what is going on under the covers.
And how do they even decide what it is about molecules that makes them toxic or nontoxic.
Lots of stuff that people thought was nontoxic turned out to be otherwise and extensive REAL experimentation is required to determine that at any rate.
It can’t be known simply by tweaking the value of a parameter in a program.
That’s just idiotic.
The scary thing is these people actually believe they are doing science,
They give scientists and science s bad name

Well, if it’s neural nets, based on similarity to other molecules that are toxic or nontoxic, which is, as you say, utterly crazy, and anyone who has had an intro chemistry class knows. Chloride. Toxic. Sodium chloride = salt.

I have a very bad feeling about what is currently going on with AI.
It’s completely out of control and left to it’s own devices, there are just a lot more ways it can go wrong than right.
And purposefully bad actors just add to my concerns. But even if that concern could be eliminated (which is basically impossible) , I would still be very worried because the decisions are being left to people who have no incentive to do the right thing and plenty (trillions) of incentive$ to do what maximizes their own benefit regardless of what it does for and to anyone else.

One of the things that has always amazed me in my professional life is the propensity of corporations and organizations to hire people who know nothing about them to tell them who they are. The less secure they are about their ideas or missions, they’re prone to throw away money they could have invested in their people by giving more of it to consultants.

Adams’ recommendation for 6 – 7 yo social studies made me giggle.
Pennridge school district [6670 students] is 40 mis n of Philly, 40 mis w of Princeton. It’s not terribly conservative, just sorta [pale pink on the ‘political map’]. However, Bucks County Herald reported the district “has been roiled in controversy over the last several years, creating what some have called a ‘culture war’ pitting conservative ideology against a progressive mindset.” The usual pandemic issues seem to have kicked that off [masks, school closures.] The current board is 8 of 9 Republican. In Nov election, 5 Dems and 5 Reps will run for 5 vacancies.
Refreshing to see that Sarasota FL rejected a contract with this guy due to lack of background/ qualifications [Vermilion was proposed by their schoolbd chair Zeigler (cofounder of MFL)]. But then, Sarasota was well forewarned as to which way the wind was blowing, and got on top of things quickly. Pennridge seems kind of newbie to rw tricks & got sandbagged.

In a local newspaper Letter to Editor by the School Board director concludes with this appeal to community to vote in November (Board): “Be sure to do your research ahead of time and not follow the advice of politicians. That is what got us into this mess in the first place.”
This story is more than a cautionary tale, it’s happening everywhere.
A quick look at this district’s website…
– Superintendent took a leave in October and is now retired. New superintendent search underway.
In the Board director’s letter, he cites the Board (5-4) has become the “de facto” leader and “…has offered no vision for the district and completely ignored the feedback of our community, our excellent administration and our dedicated faculty. Most of these actions are done in secrecy with a complete lack of transparency to the public as well.”
In the same letter, director cites:
The Board has HS Principal took a leave and Board voted against a temporary replacement and piecemealed duties
Board terminated role of 4 curriculum supervisor positions (all experienced leaders in district)
the contract with the “highly controversial Vermillion Education and usurping policies on purchasing
lowest teacher morale ever and teachers leaving in droves
He concludes explaining why he is writing and concludes appealing for people to vote: “Be sure to do your research ahead of time and not follow the advice of politicians. That is what got us into this mess in the first place.”
Here’s a snippet from their website – most of which will probably be gone in a year..
– The curriculum includes James Baldwin, Sylvia Plath, Romeo and Juliet… and seemingly progressive unit themes
– American History standards includes slavery as a cause of the Civil War
– Their student support page has a link to the Sandy Hook Promise
– They include “Social and Emotional Learning” in their district overview
