Parents in Chattanooga, Tennessee, complained to the district school board about its cancellation of a Mothers Day event that was intended to be inclusive. The school board reacted to a complaint by a member of the censorious rightwing Moms for Liberty.
Alternet reported:
Parents in Chattanooga, Tennessee boldly confronted the Hamilton County School Board and its Superintendent Justin Robertson “for caving to Moms (Against) Liberty-led bullying and canceling a librarian’s Mother’s Day lesson inclusive to kids without moms,” The Tennessee Holler tweeted on Sunday.
Moms for Liberty (which the paper dinged as “against”) is a right-wing organization that campaigns against social progress and civil rights. Media Matters for America pointed out in November 2021 that the non-profit has deep connections to the Republican Party and “has county-specific chapters across the country that target local school board meetings, school board members, administrators, and teachers.” Moms for Liberty also promoted “stripping districts of protective COVID-19 measures” and seeks to “modify classroom curriculum to exclude the teaching of ‘critical race theory’ (CRT) and sex education, all in the name of ‘parental rights.'”
Last Tuesday, according to the Chattanooga Times Free Press, Alpine Crest Elementary School librarian Caroline Mickey posted a letter on Moms for Liberty’s website stating that “With Mother’s Day approaching, I’d like to highlight this special role, but I am sensitive to the fact that not all students live with a mother. As such, I am planning a lesson that celebrates those who fill the motherly roles in our lives.”
Then, on Wednesday, ABC News Channel 9 explained that Mickey’s event was “designed to include students who didn’t have what is considered a ‘traditional’ mother. But the group Hamilton County Moms for Liberty said the books promoted what they call the ‘homosexual agenda.'”
intolerance, pettiness, narrow-mindedness
As a child of divorce, I always hated father-daughter events. The same for mother-son. They are hurtful for kids who don’t live in traditional two-parent families. Why do these cretins have so little compassion for children?
Another Hate State
I grew up in Chattanooga, TN in Hamilton County. As a senior in high school I co-lead, with another high school senior, a successful initiative to get our city school board converted from appointed to elected. Many years later I had a conversation about this with a brother-in-law who replied, “So it’s your fault.” Later the county, much more conservative than the city, took over a unified district. My greatest frustration with all of this harangue over cultural issues is that it is being driven by the loudest, not the majority. I believed in the concept of an elected board that would be driven by a majority who could prevent the tyranny of the few. Across the country our political institutions are backing down too easily.
So few people vote in school board elections that it’s relatively easy for an organized minority to win control. But if the board is extremist, they are likely to be voted out by a larger number in next election.
We know a gay couple who are married and have adopted three children. These children are from one family so by this adaption the children are very, very happy.
This couple gives these children all the love and carrying that traditional male-female married couple would give them. The children are doing very well in school, are well adjusted after all the trauma they faced being told they are no longer wanted by the birth mother and moved from foster home to foster home.
This couple is a shining example of how parents should love and care for their children.
This adaption by this gay couple has been well accepted in our community. It is too bad that some many children have to go though so much until, if they are lucky, they are become part of a loving and caring forever family.
School principals everywhere, forever have been diligent in sensitivity to Mother’s and Father’s day and Grandparents Visit School Day.
Sadly a child with a deceased parent, divorced parents, children being raised by an aunt or uncle or grandparents, children with foster parents who are sensitive to not use the term ‘mom” or “dad”, students in shelters…
So a librarian does what librarians and elementary teachers have been doing FOREVER – sensitivity to children who live in all kinds of homes with parents, caregivers, and others.
And predictably, this group of “moms” jumped on the opportunity to spew their phobias and anti-gay coded slurs.
Given the statistics, even in good old Tennessee, there are gay moms and there are definitely right-wing moms whose kids are – wait for it – gay!
Fascism is similar to terminal cancer and the only way to fight it means fighting fire with a bigger fire that destroys a lot more than the cancer.
If or when the mindless drones that are MAGA RINO fascists gain too much power, to get rid of them will take a pyrrhic victory.
Moms for liberty is a propagandist & homophobic organization. However, you have to admire how well organized they are and how quickly they mobilized why can’t the Democrats do this why can’t the Democrats get grass roots organizations that gain local and national attention
