Florida Governor Ron DeSantis wants to stake his claim to be the leader of the libertarian anti-vaxxers. He has banned any mandates by schools or businesses to require masking or getting vaccinated. The legislature went along with him, on a temporary basis, but now he wants the legislators to mandate non-compliance with CDC public health protocols. (Because he opposes mandates!). In short, he is mandating that no one can require a mandate to wear a mask or get vaccinated.
Is he stupid, clever, craven, cunning or what? If nothing else, he’s getting attention.
The Miami Herald reports:
Despite facing pushback from medical professionals and businesses, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced legislation Tuesday that would make permanent a law to penalize companies that require employees to wear masks or be vaccinated for COVID-19 and added a new ban on medical boards reprimanding doctors for spreading COVID misinformation.
“This is just nuts that we’re still doing this,’’ DeSantis said to cheering supporters in Panama City Beach. “We need to be leading on this by making all of these protections permanent in Florida statute as we need to do in the upcoming legislative session.”
The proposal will attempt to make permanent a series of laws passed by legislators in November 2021 after DeSantis called a special session aimed at restricting Florida businesses that were following a federal law requiring mask mandates or requiring employees to be vaccinated. If approved by Florida legislators, the measure would continue to prohibit COVID-19 vaccine and mask requirements in schools and government, and prohibit COVID-19 vaccine requirements for employment or travel.
Those laws are set to expire in June. DeSantis wants them re-enacted and made tougher to be sure that no one feels compelled to wear a mask or get vaccinated.
This year, DeSantis wants to expand the sanctions on businesses by prohibiting employers from hiring or firing based on vaccine status or wearing a mask, and he wants to revive a failed proposal from last year’s legislative session that would make it more difficult for a medical licensing board to reprimand or sanction a doctor for views expressed by the medical professional — including on social media.
Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo also spoke at the news conference Tuesday and repeated his claim that masks are not effective in preventing the spread of the virus and dismissed the effectiveness of vaccines. “This is the first time in history where we are using this technology widely in human beings,’’ he said, referring to the mRNA vaccines.
“You’re telling people to put it in children, and you’ve never even shown the children to gain from it in terms of an actual help. That’s the land of crazy. Florida is the land of sanity.”
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website lists several studies that have shown masking to be helpful in curbing the spread of the virus. In January 2022, a CDC report found vaccinated Americans were far less likely both to contract the virus and die from it.
LEADING HOUSE DEMOCRAT RESPONDS
House Democratic Leader Fentrice Driskell of Tampa called the governor and his administration “the No. 1 peddler of misinformation from the anti-vax establishment.”
“It is a fake ideology with real consequences,’’ she said, noting that less than one-third of Florida’s nursing home residents, the most vulnerable age group, are up to date on their vaccines, even though the state Department of Health recommends it.
Driskell emphasized that “no one ever promised total immunity, but those vaccines do lessen the chance of infection and they increase the likelihood of a milder case if you do get sick.” She accused the governor of “rewriting history” after promoting the vaccines when they were first available.
Since former President Donald Trump lost his reelection bid, DeSantis sought to become the face of the opposition to the Biden administration’s COVID policies which the governor said were overreaching. He called lawmakers into special session in November 2021 to punish companies that followed the federal law.
DeSantis wanted the legislature to punish businesses that required their employees to get vaccinated, but more than 100 corporations objected to the state’s interference in their operations, and the legislature did not adopt DeSantis’ most punitive measures. However, after his sweeping re-election, the legislature is likely to give him what he wants…
“The Free State of Florida did not happen by accident,” DeSantis said at the news conference Tuesday in which he took no questions. “It required us over these last few years to stand against major institutions in our society — the bureaucracy, the medical establishment, legacy media and even the President of the United States — who together were working to impose a bio medical security state on society.”

It is all the things you write above, but this is likely to be the most far-reaching seriously evil and destructive thing that can be done to put the future of the human race at risk through governmental action. It politicizes current and future scientific decisions to such an extent that it would politicize any scientific issue so that public health officials are powerless to act. It has the potential to rise in importance to the issue of climate change.
What they are doing to the House Office on Ethics is a template for what they want to do with public health. For those of you who forgot how elemental public health is to the human race, dust off an old copy of Sinclair Lewis’s Arrowsmith. If this becomes law, it will be the scariest thing republicans have ever done and will become a core tenet of American Fascism: facts will be negotiable until they agree with the party line.
He is trying to make public health a states right issue, but certain diseases are communicable and do not stop at state lines. The feds finally gave in to the military. It’s a bad precedent, IMO.
It’s a recipe for global disaster.
I don’t think the military wanted to be exempt from the vaccine mandate. The Defense Secretary opposed it. The Republicans demanded an end to the mandate in return for supporting passage of the budget.
Apparently DeSantis has NO problem watching people die from any number of different diseases, including COVID. I don’t wish anything bad on anyone but DeSantis must remember he and his family live in Florida. So, he needs to remember “What Goes Around. Comes Around.” It never fails to happen.
“”If nothing else, he’s getting attention.”
That’s what it’s ALL about: attention.
DeSantis is the third grade attention seeker who never grew up.
Reading a most interesting book.

Book by Michael Lewis
Everyone in the US needs to write him a letter saying they won’t vacation in Florida as long as the law is in effect.
This is a great suggestion because the economy is the only thing he truly wants to protect. People should also opt to not vacation in Florida as long as DeSantis puts politics over health, safety and science. Hurting the Florida economy would take this arrogant fascist down a peg, damage some of the luster on his gigantic ego and hurt his chances in 2024.
I won’t vacation in Florida.
But I won’t write him a letter because he is the type who will sic his thugs on you.
And I won’t visit Florida as long as DeSantis or anyone like him is governor.
If people want to take their kids to Disney, they can do it in California.
This is a slippery slope as well. Remember that during the Cold War, one of the most effective propaganda weapons against the East was truth and engagement, which was encapsulated in the Brandt doctrine of Ostpolitik. Helmut Kohl, his fiercest opponent, acknowledged that Ostpolitik was as essential as military might if not more so in bringing down the Iron Curtain.
DeSantis is not shy about wanting to make his state Wingnut Central. He is nationalizing Florida’s issues. We in Ohio are constantly being bombarded by Florida state-funded ads asking us to chip in for their disaster relief. His threats are two-sided: scare off the libs, bring in the nuts. That why, even if they have to continue to play by today’s rules–which are constantly bending in their direction through laws and discrepancies in enforcement–they continue to try to change the demographics to isolate “the libs” even more. And if “the libs” quit coming to their state, people like Bob and our other friends in the state will seriously have to start fearing for their lives as they are marginalized more and more. It ain’t as simple as it seems.
“We in Ohio are constantly being bombarded by Florida state-funded ads asking us to chip in for their disaster relief.”
I was shocked to see such a commercial when I was out of state for the holidays last month.
I don’t think the Ostpolitik analogy works.
It worked in East Germany because the people there were literally dying for a better alternative than what they had.
The folks who support DeSantis were already in Florida long before DeSantis came to power and they actually chose DeSantis because they support his policies.
They were what got him elected.
It’s not like these folks just need some liberals to show them how great Liberalness is.
These folks are not going to have their attitudes changed by anything other than policies that hurt them in the wallet.
And even that may not work.
But it’s probably all going to be irrelevant anyway because DeSangis has no intention of being satisfied with being governor of Florida.
Florida and it’s people are simply a stepping stone for him.
For me the Ostpolitik analogy matters for the few sane people left in the state like Bob. If we abandon the state, who will he have left to talk to? A good friend of mine who is a teacher in deepest, darkest Florida basically is never free to state her opinion at work or in public–who knows who might be lurking in the next aisle over–lest she be accused of being abnormal and risk her job.
I used to vacation in Florida. No more! Going to Puerto Rico this winter.
If I remember correctly, Puerto Rico survived the same disaster capitalism that Shock Doctrined New Orleans, and they still have public schools. Have a great trip!
Wait, wait, let me get this correct. You actually spent free time not related to work or family commitments in Florida? With Newark and Hackensack in your backyard? No accountin’ for some folks’ tastes. (TiC)
and, uh, maybe DISNEY and the rest will stand up and recommend or insure people know masks are ok and they won’t be chastised.
Us blog commenters and bloggers doing all the communications are a drop in the buck compared to multi-billion corporations.
It is government tyranny when a state official compels private businesses not to protect the health of their employees.
Where and when did this rectal opening get his medical degree and license to practice medicine?
Good question! Amazing that he found a “surgeon general” for the state who is as ignorant as he is
Party like it’s pre-1954!
So they have rolled back Roe, guns, affirmative action, diversity awareness training, desegregation (choice will take care of that for the civil rights inspectors, right?), non-discrimination for sexual orientation, gay marriage, immigrant support, medicaid for kids, etc. etc.
What’s next regressive Republicans to feed your nostalgia for the ’50s?
Prohibit polio vaccines?
No milk money for schools?
Only books with names like Dick, Jane, and Sally?
Never mind I want to keep my Global Entry.
It’s the US Entry that gives me the willies.
You might have a point . On my last trip to the UK I slid my passport through the scanner and waled on through.
Coming home I went through 3 scanners at JFK before I found one that works. Then I stood on a longer line on Global entry than those waiting to go through the regular entry.
That said I still can’t or wont post what I would like to.
Election have consequences. A majority of Floridians prefer a bully with reactionary views to candidates who trust science, history, and democracy. Unfortunate the Florida DNC has such a weak base who endure the results.
I also believe the right wing radicals are encouraging more like minded people to move to Florida. When I moved to Florida Charlie Crist was governor, and I thought of the state as a purple state.
You know Florida had one of the highest death rates from the so-called Free- dumb governor. Not free from COVID here! Free from being “woke” too! We don’t have to be worried about CRT being taught
Why doesn’t DeSantis just ban COViD in Florida and be done with the problem?
He could build a COVID wall around the entire state to keep COVID out.
Of course, he would have to build COVID bridges (like they have in Vermont) to allow his future buses of migrants from Texas to go over the wall and enter Florida so that they can then be shipped north.
ALISON KISER
40,000 more deaths than NY and no demographic explains it, not population nor age of population. In fact population density and more importantly household population density would favor lower infections and deaths in Flora-Duh .
Some would call that mass murder.
It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no, it’s…SuperDeSantis. Cleaning up our health, minds, and pockets with seemingly no effort at all!
Who would have thought our only hope of saving ourselves from DeSantis in 2024 is Trump taking him out? If childish name-calling won’t work and DeSantis gets the nomination, then Trump running as a third party candidate would. As a teacher in the bright red county of Sarasota, the home to Michael Flynn, Charlie Kirk, and the birthplace of the Moms for Liberty, we are in scary scary times.
Saying GAY, my thoughts exactly. Trump takes out DeSantis by running on his own party line.
DeSantis is a quirky goof. He’s good for the unique state of Florida and Florida only. Biden and Trump are both working in the baggage department. My crystal ball says California Governor Newsom will be the 47th president. He’s smooth, and nothing sticks to him.
DeSantis is more like a burr. Everything sticks to him — or more precisely, he sticks to everything, which is the way he likes it.
When, (NOT if) the next lethal virus arrives, maybe Florida will lose so many voters, the Republicans will lose Florida in the next election.
Eventually sea level rise will submerge the entire state so that DeSantis will become Atlantis
SDP, how long do we have to wait?
Too long.
Word Press needs emojis.
DeSantis in Atlantis
When Florida’s Atlantis
The fish will not say “gay”
And Kingdumb of DeSantis
Will rule Poseidon’s way
With Trident for enforcement
And great white sharks on call
And Kochtopus endorsement
He’ll really rule them all
A key facet of the Russia RepubliQan program to destroy American democracy and institute fascist dictatorship is the relentless attack on expertise. Medical professionals must now take a back seat to Haitian Voodoo witch-doctors hawking horse worm pills. Military experts now breed “losers and suckers” and need to be more like the Russian army. University professors are now “woke” and make white supremacists “uncomfortable” with their accurate class discussions of American racism. On all cultural and political fronts the dictator’s omnipotence must never be challenged. He never loses, never relents, has no faults and all criticisms levied against him are “hoaxes” and “witch hunts”. Increasing advocacy for political violence and silent consent when it does erupt is the future of the perfidious Trump cult.
Students excused from physical activity for one week after getting Covid-19 vaccine: MOE

SINGAPORE – Students at schools and institutes of higher learning have been excused from physical activity for one week after receiving the first and second doses of the Covid-19 vaccine, a Ministry of Education (MOE) spokesman said on Tuesday (July 6).
In response to queries from The Straits Times, the spokesman said this has been the case since late June, prior to the start of Term 3 on June 28.
The Ministry’s statement came a day after the expert committee on Covid-19 vaccinations recommended that anyone getting an mRNA Covid-19 vaccine, in particular adolescents and younger men, should avoid any exercise or strenuous physical activity for a week after either dose of the vaccine.
On Tuesday, the MOE spokesman said that all physical education and co-curricular activity teachers are currently checking on the vaccination status of students before the start of physical activities.
MOE has also advised all parents and students to be mindful of any potential side effects from the vaccination.
Students who develop chest pain, shortness of breath or an abnormal heartbeat should seek medical attention promptly, said the spokesman.”MOE will continue to work with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and Health Sciences Authority (HSA) to closely monitor students who have experienced adverse reactions after the vaccination, so that appropriate care is given to these students promptly,” he added.
The expert committee’s recommendation on Monday came as HSA released its third Covid-19 vaccine safety update which said that the authority had received 12 reports of myocarditis and pericarditis in individuals following vaccination with the mRNA vaccines.
Pericarditis is the inflammation of tissue surrounding the heart, while myocarditis refers to the inflammation of the heart muscle.
Seven of the cases involved males aged below 30 years old, which is higher than expected for this age group. Half the cases occurred after the first dose and the remainder after the second one.
The committee noted that there had also been a case of a 16-year-old youth who suffered cardiac arrest shortly after taking part in a strenuous weightlifting session. This occurred six days after he received his first dose of the mRNA vaccine.
Outlining its new recommendation, the committee said: “While most persons with vaccine-related myocarditis observed locally and internationally have mild symptoms and make an uneventful recovery, it is possible that the condition may be aggravated by factors or strenuous activities that may affect the heart.”

413 people get Covid-19 vaccine injury payouts, over $1.8m paid or offered to applicants: MOH
PUBLISHED JAN 25, 2023, 11:18 PM SGT
SINGAPORE – A total of 413 people have received payouts under the Vaccine Injury Financial Assistance Programme (Vifap) as at Dec 31, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said on Wednesday.
This is up from 296 at the end of 2021.
A total of $1,895,000 has been paid out or offered to applicants, the ministry added.
The Tier 1 payout of $225,000 – extended to those who have died or become permanently disabled following administration of a Covid-19 vaccine – has been extended to three applicants so far.
It was previously reported that among those who qualified for the maximum payout was a 16-year-old who suffered cardiac arrest in 2021 following a weightlifting session, six days after receiving his first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty vaccine. He was in the intensive care unit and underwent inpatient rehabilitation.
Vifap provides “one-time goodwill financial assistance” to those who experience serious side effects related to Covid-19 vaccines.
Those eligible must be Singapore citizens, permanent residents or long-term pass holders who were vaccinated under the national Covid-19 vaccination programme.
They must also have subsequently experienced a serious side effect that either required inpatient hospitalisation, caused persistent incapacity or disability, or was fatal, which was assessed by a doctor to be related to their vaccination…
“All Vifap applications will be reviewed by an independent clinical panel. To qualify for Vifap, the clinical panel must have assessed that a serious side effect occurred that is related to the Covid-19 vaccine received,” the spokesman added…
