I know that many readers of this blog are not on Twitter. One of the reasons I remain there is Julia Davis. She watches Russian television and reports on what she sees, with video clips. She writes for The Daily Beast and is creator of The Russian Media Monitor. @JuliaDavisNews
A few days ago, she wrote this:
Meanwhile in Russia: the host and his guest concur that Ukraine should be erased off the map and even the memory that it existed should be destroyed. The host says that Russia will always be an empire and being in a state of war is only natural for any empire of Russia’s size.
The text is accompanied by a video clip.
And this:
Meanwhile in Russia: in all seriousness, pundits and experts on Russian state TV argue whether President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky is the Antichrist or just a small demon.
And she retweeted a photo of Kiev last Christmas, two months before Putin’s brutal, pointless invasion:

She also retweeted a video of Mariupol last winter, its trees and buildings bedecked with festive lights, completely unaware that the city would be reduced to rubble in two months, all that beauty utterly destroyed, its people dead or dispersed.
So scary to read that Fox News has tapped into their Russia market.
,,,sarcasm, btw.
Russian media love Tucker Carlson because Tucker ❤️ Putin
Oh, wait a minute….the joke’s on me: they actually watch him over there, don’t they? I totally forgot about that (smh). Man, I’m getting old (smh).
There was a story a few days ago in The NY Times about how Russian state media —Putin’s propaganda machine—likes to run clips from Tucker Carlson’s show
Color televisions were introduced in East Germany in the early 1970s, but few people owned them in the part of the country near Berlin or near border with West Germany. They would rather hang on their old black-and-white sets. Why? The color television sets were designed so that they could not receive East German television broadcasts. They could continue to watch western tv on their old sets to watch the news and American programs. The comparisons of the East vs. West German news gave them all the evidence they needed to figure out they were being told lies. But there was really nothing they could do about it.
Fascinating bit of history, Greg!
Could not receive West German…
Sheesh, the proofreading gods let me down every time.
I do this kind of thing all the time, Greg. Increasingly, as I age.
Nah we got it. People like me who live in glass houses can’t
throw stones . The edit button was invented for me.
Greg, did you see the TV series “Deutschland 1983, 1989, 1991”?
If what I read this morning was a fact, then Julia Davis may not be on Twitter anymore. What I read said Musk had all traditional media reporters (not just reporters – others were kicked off too) from traditional media blocked and kicked off Twitter.
In 1938, Hitler invaded the Sudetenland region of the nation of Czechoslovakia, and the four key European democracies not only didn’t oppose him — they signed a peace treaty with Hitler called the Four Power Pact that approved his takeover and they told the world that the Pact would guarantee “peace for our time” because Hitler promised he didn’t want anything else.
When Winston Churchill read the Pact, he said: “You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor — and now you shall have war.”
Churchill was right: Hitler had no intention of stopping with the takeover of Czechoslovakian territory — he had declared his goal of re-establishing the former German Reich, just like Putin has declared that he will restore the former Soviet Union empire. Hitler called his empire “TheThird Reich” and less than 12 months after the “peace-for-our-time” treaty was signed, Hitler launched World War II to create the Reich Empire.
Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, who headed the U.S. European Command’s Army forces until his retirement, points out that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is only Russia’s first step toward taking over the entire Middle East, thereby threatening the very existence of Israel and America’s oil supplies from Saudi Arabia.
That would set the stage for World War III — unless Russia is decisively and quickly driven out of Ukraine, including out of Ukraine’s Crimean region that Russia illegally occupied in 2014.
And yet, in spite of this existential threat to Israel and the triggering of World War III, once again there are calls in Congress for the United States to stop aiding Ukraine, and Henry Kissinger and the Wall Street Journal are calling for “peace-in-our-time” treaties with Putin. They deserve to be awarded The Neville Chamberlain Trophy.
The 2014 failure of the United States and its allies to prevent Russia’s takeover of Ukraine’s Crimea is what convinced Putin that the timid western nations would stop him from invading all of Ukraine. And, so far, western nations including the United States have only furnished Ukraine with minimal weapons for fear of angering Putin. Now, Putin is just waiting for western nations, including politicians in the United States, to tire of even sending weapons — and that is beginning to happen.
The United States and democratic European nations must vastly increase the aid to Ukraine and should do so immediately. If Putin isn’t quickly and decisively stopped, the United States and western European nations are going to find themselves in a far larger and far more costly war.
