Ron DeSantis replaced five members of the Broward School Board, and his new majority fired the district’s superintendent. An election was held, and four of his five appointees are gone. The new board reinstated the superintendent, for 90 days. Where DeSantis goes, disruption follows.
In the latest of a series of unexpected twists and turns, the Broward School Board on Tuesday handed Superintendent Vickie Cartwright her job back — at least temporarily. The eight members of the nine-member board voted 5-3 to rescind Cartwright’s Nov. 14 termination. That firing came in a late-night vote after the five members appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis terminated her contract in a 5-4 vote. Four of the five are no longer on the board. The eight board members present at the School Board meeting Tuesday agreed to revisit Cartwright’s performance come Jan. 24, the deadline initially set in late October by the former board for a 90-day improvement plan by Cartwright.

I hate DeSantis. What he did to the poor immigrants in my home town of San Antonio, TX really sticks in my craw. He’s just as bad if not worse than Trump.
Trump is dumb and has no moral compass. DeSantis is smart and has no moral compass. Heaven help us all if he is elected President. Censorship, book banning, no vaccines, weaponizing the IRS against his critics…meddling in our lives, trying to control what we are allowed to read, learn, think.
DeSantis will never be president. He lacks the charisma needed to win hat particular office.
Trump hasn’t turned his insult machine on DeSantis yet.
I don’t get the DeSantis is smart claims.
Compared to Trump, yes.
But he has lost pretty much ever legal suit so far.
Is that smart?
I don’t buy that getting an ivy league degree (or two) means or makes one smart.
I could name many people with such degrees who have done dumb things.
And as Forest Bump said, stupid is as stupid does.
Some of the dumbest folks have ivy league degrees.
They just think they are smart.

SDP: Smart or not, there is method in the madness of decree and judicial checkmate. You decree what your supporters want, knowing the court will kill it because you cannot do what you claimed to do. When the judiciary strikes down your illegal act, your supporters are angry with the judge, not with you. Then you rail at the judge, who has just done what that judge had to do. If you are a tear down the government conservative, you win by further erosion of belief in the social contract. This is your basic aim anyway, because you do not accept the idea of the social contract except the Hobbesian view: man is evil, he needs absolute monarchy to control his behavior. And you are the monarch who can do just that type of control.
By that standard, Trump is also smart because that is precisely the sort of thing he does.
I just don’t see the difference
Like Trump, DeSantis backed a bunch lot losers (losing candidates and just real losers) in the midterms, including Herschel Walker.
Was that smart?
SDP: Smart or not is the wrong question. Political figures cannot help themselves. They are people who run on instinct. It has to be because of so much extemporaneous behavior in the politician’s life. Both DeSantis and Trump are riding the wave of disaffected white men. All they really need to be able to do is to play that part in the improv. Perhaps this is a type of intelligence. Perhaps not. You just have to be like the guy at the barbershop who can always think of something to say that both enrages and amuses the patrons.
If smart or not is not the fight question, perhaps people need to quit misusing the word.
Devious, deceptive or manipulating would
be much more accurate.
Dangerous would be another apt word.
And it applies to both DeSantis and Trump, although DeSantis is probably more dangerous because he has a record of using a heavily armed SWAT team to raid the home and terrorize the family of z scientist who was saying things he did not like.
Way to go due process and Democracy!
Sometimes due process works and sometimes it doesn’t. Let’s hope it works more than it doesn’t.

So why aren’t the national press and Democrats focusing on Desantis’ losses? From the failed indictments of former felons who voted with Florida’s blessing to the unconstitutionality of “anti-woke” legislation, Desantis has been losing “bigly”, yet crickets. While feigning outrage over the Governor’s performative politics the media don’t seem to be interested that he’s a loser.
The size of DeSantis’ election victory encourages him to be even more assertive and tyrannical
Floriduncians actually believe the DeSantis propaganda line that he makes them freer. I just came back from a bicycle trip to the grocery. Passed a truck with a big sticker on the back window reading, “Don’t New York My Florida.”
I don’t think it’s lead in the drinking water that causes this stupidity in Flor-uh-duh. It’s a medical mystery.
Shortly after I moved to Flor-uh-duh, I was in a drive-through lane at a fast-food place, and I noticed that the trunk of the car ahead of me was slightly ajar but not tied. So, since we were both stopped, I got out of my car and walked up to the window of the car to let the driver know.
I guess the driver heard my accent. He said, “You walk up on a person’s car like that in Florida, they’re going to shoot you.”
I thought, “Ah, a state full of stable geniuses.”
A stable of geniuses like this?
