Earlier this year, Florida Governor announced the creation of an “election police” unit, to arrest former felons who voted illegally. The unit arrested 20 people. A Miami judge just dismissed the case against one of them, the third consecutive loss on this count.
A Miami judge has tossed out another voter fraud case brought by Gov. Ron DeSantis’ elections police, the third case to fall apart since the governor announced the arrests.
On Wednesday, Circuit Judge Laura Anne Stuzin reached the same conclusion as another Miami judge did in a different voter’s case, saying that statewide prosecutors didn’t have the ability to bring charges against Ronald Lee Miller.
Because he was convicted of second-degree murder in 1990, Miller, 58, was ineligible to vote. But after his voter registration application was cleared by the Florida Department of State, Miami-Dade’s supervisor of elections issued him a voter ID card, and he voted in November 2020.
Florida’s voting laws are ‘broken,’ felon advocates say following fraud arrests DeSantis held a high-profile news conference in August to tout the arrests of Miller and 19 others who were all ineligible to vote because of past murder or felony sex offense convictions but who had all voted after applying for and receiving voter ID cards. DeSantis oversees the Department of State.

Does it occur to anyone to wonder why felons are still disenfranchised even after they have paid their dues for their crimes? Is it because it’s easier for both parties to take away the voices of the most hated and marginalized people in the country in order to continue to abuse and exploit prisoners in private prisons doing prison labor?
If Democrats really care about voting rights, especially for minorities, they should be vocal about restoring such rights to felons upon re-entry into society, especially considering the disparate impact of the criminal system on minorities. If ex-felons had the right to vote, the voter fraud issue among ex-felons would be moot.
Does it occur to anyone to wonder why people who claim to care about voting rights were more than willing to throw voting rights under the bus when they had a chance to vote for a president who would fill an open Supreme Court seat that would either result in a 5-4 majority that wanted to protect voting rights, to a 5-4 majority (with a chance of that anti voting rights majority being much higher) that would not protect them?
Anyone who cared about voting rights voted to make sure a Democrat filled an open Supreme Court seat in 2016 with the court evenly split 4-4.
Only one party cares about voting rights period, and one party has aggressively tried to deny voting rights. Those who said there was “no difference” demonstrated that to them, voting rights was of so little importance that the difference between a party that seeks to disenfranchise and one that doesn’t is invisible to them.
But do love how it is the party that believes in protecting voting rights that gets the blame by those who used their vote to throw voting rights under the bus.
Thank you. The individual to whom you responded really should find a qanon site that fits her malignant opinions that have no connection to reality. She’d be much happier. It seems the only reason she comes here is to spew idiocy and breathlessly seek inappropriate “I told you so” opportunities. That seems to be the only thing that keeps her going. But someone needs to tell her “I told you so” has no meaning if one is a deluded ideologue with no understanding of how the real world functions.

You can add to voting rights every issue that Agent 77 professes to care about. Although she may not be wrong in some of her complaints. When given 2 choices ” LESSER EVIL VOTING” counts immensely .
DeSantis need to be recalled people of Florida look up the recall laws in Florida and launch a massive recall on DeSantis believe in democracy democracy really works
Won’t happen. Florida voters’ chance to do that was last month and he was reelected by 19 percent over his opponent
I believe that the Voter’ are smart and now that they see his destruction of the Values of the People.
They can launch a “Recall ” of DeSantis.
They have to be educated on the process !!!
Not surprised to see that all of these GOP political stunts–and they are propagandist political stunts to accrue votes–“magically” just disappear upon their own merits (or lack thereof). With a complicit Corporate-Industrial Information Complex that creates and relies upon the Outrage Machine or Angertainment, I have not heard anything further about Critical Race Theory in schools nor anything further generated towards the increased limiting of rights for LGBTQ+ citizens. Now that the commotion over the incoming Red-Wave-Turned-Ripple is over, I’m only hoping enough attention is diverted so anyone who is concerned about protecting their rights against our version of Nazism–Republicans–can re-entrench themselves and store up enough social, emotional, psychological wherewithal to withstand another onslaught in a couple years. These issues will flare up again for 2024, don’t mistake that they won’t.
You make a good point, Yossarian. The Republicans have no policies so they whip up hysteria about CRT, trans youth, etc., but forget about them when the election is over. And they will get back to these phony issues in time for the next election.
DeSantis does not care about democracy. He wants to impose his agenda on everyone else. Restricting the voting rights of felons is part of his plan. Lots of felons didn’t dare try to vote in the midterms because they were afraid of being targeted by the DeSantis administration. Florida’s newly created Office of Election Crimes and Security was created to suppress the vote and erode trust in the election process. This agency is a politically motivated stunt created to prosecute non-existent crimes.
Sounds like entrapment.
Voting information and materials were sent out to the felons for the explicit purpose of entrapping them and creating a fabricated high profile scandal.
You have to wonder who at Harvard taught him how to use the law for political gain.
Do they offer a course on how to use the law to stick it to your political opponents.?
DeSantis is a performance artist. aka, “Lil Ronny D.” His whole culture war is a huge stunt to get national attention. It includes the whole anti-CRT and anti-woke nonsense along with this war on public schools, purging library schools, marginalizing LGBTQ and minorities and shipping migrants to the Northeast.
DeSantis was obviously taught very poorly at Harvard law because most of the “legal” maneuvers he uses are actually illegal.
A degree from Harvard law obviously means nothing.
Maybe DeSantis took a special course in how to evade the law
“How to evade the law 101” taught at Harvard Law was obviously not a very good course, because most of his attempts to evade the law have failed.
Notice that resident Russia-puppet D77 starts with the idea that BOTH parties have disenfranchised felons but then slides over to “if DEMOCRATS really cared…” This is because she wants Democrats to be perceived of as “pro-criminal” ala BLM etc… The goal is always to further divide Americans and increase polarization. It’s pathetic, predictable and always unconvincing.
