This is a thrilling story, reported by The Intercept.
THE NATIONWIDE CAMPAIGN to stifle discussions of race and gender in public schools through misinformation and bullying suffered a reversal in Idaho on Monday, when a high school senior vocally opposed to book bans and smears against LGBTQ+ youth took a seat on the Boise school board.
The student, Shiva Rajbhandari, was elected to the position by voters in Idaho’s capital last week, defeating an incumbent board member who had refused to reject an endorsement from a local extremist group that has harassed students and pushed to censor local libraries.
Rajbhandari, who turned 18 days before the election, was already well-known in the school district as a student organizer on climate, environmental, voting rights, and gun control issues. But in the closing days of the campaign, his opponent, Steve Schmidt, wasendorsed by the far-right Idaho Liberty Dogs, which in response helped Rajbhandari win the endorsement of Boise’s leading newspaper, the Idaho Statesman.
Rajbhandari, a third-generation Idahoan whose father is from Nepal, was elected to a two-year term with 56 percent of the vote.
In an interview, Rajbhandari told The Intercept that although he had hoped people would vote for him rather than against his opponent — “My campaign was not against Steve Schmidt,” he said — he was nonetheless shocked that Schmidt did not immediately reject the far-right group’s endorsement. “I think that’s what the majority of voters took issue with,” Rajbhandari said.
The Idaho Liberty Dogs, which attacked Rajbhandari on Facebook for being “Pro Masks/Vaccines” and leading protests “which created traffic jams and costed [sic] tax payers money,” spent the summer agitating to have books removed from public libraries in Nampa and Meridian, two cities in the Boise metro area.
But, Rajbhandari said, “that’s the least of what they’ve done. Last year, there was a kid who brought a gun to Boise High, which is my school, and he got suspended and they organized an armed protest outside our school.”
Rajbhandari, who started leading Extinction Rebellion climate protests in Boise when he was 15, is familiar with the group’s tactics. “We used to have climate strikes, like back in ninth grade, and they would come with AR-15s,” he said, bringing rifles to intimidate “a bunch of kids protesting for a livable future.”
So when the Idaho Liberty Dogs called on Boise voters to support Schmidt — and a slate of other candidates for the school board who, ultimately, all lost — Rajbhandari told me he texted his rival to say, “You need to immediately disavow this.”
“This is a hate group,” Rajbhandari says he told Schmidt. “They intimidate teachers, they are a stain on our schools, and their involvement in this election is a stain on your candidacy.” Schmidt, however, refused to clearly reject the group, even after the Idaho Liberty Dogs lashed out at a local rabbi who criticized the endorsement by comparing the rabbi to Hitler and claiming that he harbored “an unrelenting hatred for white Christians.”
While the school board election was a hyperlocal one, Rajbhandari is aware that the forces he is battling operate at the state and national level. “Idaho is at the center of this out-of-state-funded far-right attack to try to undermine schools, with the end goal of actually abolishing public education,” Rajbhandari told me. “There’s a group, they’re called the Idaho Freedom Foundation, and they actually control a lot of the political discourse in our legislature. Their primary goal is to get rid of public education and disburse the money to charter schools or get rid of that funding entirely.”
For his courage and candor, he won the endorsement of The Idaho Statesman.
This is a remarkable young man with a bright future ahead of him. I am happy to add him to the honor roll of this blog.
Read the rest of the story by opening the link. Rajbhandari is a force to be reckoned with. He is a good omen of the bright, dedicated young people who stand up for their teachers and for environmental activism, who fight for gun control and against censorship. Best wishes to him!
This young man is indeed a very bright guiding light lot our future
agreed!!!!!
What kind of a unamerican gut is this with a name like that? Time to git all ar guns and fight for the liberty of alluswhiteguys.
I am a graduate of Boise Public Schools. It is extremely unfortunate that districts in Idaho are now only having schools open 4 days a week.

Students in Idaho’s largest districts — Boise, West Ada, Nampa, Bonneville Joint, Pocatello/Chubbuck, Idaho Falls, Coeur d’Alene, Vallivue, and Twin Falls — are expected to be in class on Fridays.
More rural districts transition to a four-day week in hopes of attracting teachers
Carly Flandro 09/14/2022
It’s no secret that rural school districts have an especially hard time finding teachers.
In the Aberdeen School District, one teacher opening has been advertised for three years without a single application coming in.
The district did fill four other teaching positions this year, but none of those new staff members have their teacher certification.
In the hopes of recruiting and retaining more qualified teachers, Aberdeen and a number of other rural districts throughout the state are adopting a four-day week for the first time this school year.
The other districts include Meadows Valley, Parma, Mountain View, New Plymouth, Fruitland and Weiser.
They bring the tally up to 81 Idaho districts and charters (out of 186) that have made the switch to a four-day school week. The number has more than doubled in the last 10 years; in the 2012-2013 school year, only 39 districts had a four-day schedule.
As that number grows, it puts pressure on five-day districts to jump on the bandwagon – or potentially lose staff members to surrounding districts that have Fridays off.
Those districts making the leap are doing so in spite of drawbacks to students, like longer days that come with increased fatigue, reduced access to free meals and time with a teacher, and working parents who must find daycare.
What we have around the country is the result of twenty years of so-called reform which has really meant a disinvestment in public education and other public services as well. Jackson Mississippi’s water crisis and others as well are indicative of what happens under years of right wing leadership. It creates an atmosphere ripe for privatization, which is another slippery slope.
It is hard for rural districts to attract teachers when there are few perks to the job. The four day week may entice some teachers, but I agree it is not helpful to parents or students, particularly the younger ones. Some districts in rural Texas are also experimenting with a four day week. Disinvestment is a slippery slope that is not in the best interests of young people.
I too have been thinking about the unity of low tax politics and the failure that follows it.
Perhaps the young people in this country will not be fooled by the radical, right wing extremists. The Democrats need to actively seek out young voters and newly minted citizens. Republicans in Florida are offering free citizenship classes with a dose of propaganda for green card holders. They also wait outside citizenship ceremonies to register them. Democrats must become just as shrewd and active. Democracy hangs in the balance.
I feel like it’s a big problem that so many Democrats vote with school privatization bc they think they are doing good, and don’t want to hear otherwise. I vote Dem, but I’m more of a Bernie gal.
Oh yes. And yes. Bring our unions back!!!!
Agreed. In order to build a healthy middle class, we need to revive union membership.
Media reported that the Boise Education Association (teachers union) endorsed Steve Schmidt as recently as 8/30/2022, after the Liberty Dogs info. reached public awareness.
Linda, that’s astonishing! The teachers endorsed the far-right candidate? What were they thinking? Maybe they assumed Schmidt would win and wanted to act nice. Bad!
This isn’t the first time that the teachers unions have been on the wrong side. National union leaders need to bring a concerted, A-game package of instruction to the locals. Clearly, too many locals are in the dark about the issues.
the Idaho Liberty Dogs lashed out at a local rabbi who criticized the endorsement by comparing the rabbi to Hitler”
Because, you know , rabbis have so much in common with Hilter. Especially their hatred for Jews.
The Idaho Liberty Dogs showed their motto: Dumb and Proud of It!
the new QANON understanding of history: simply compare people to Hitler whenever you want to rile up the masses
Bravo, Shiva!
Isn’t it lovely to have an opportunity to say that!
I concur!!!
Shiva Rajbhandari sounds like he is a positive roll-model to counter extreme right racist hate mongers. To stand up like that against hate groups that threaten and sometimes shoot and kill who they hate, he is incredibly courageous.
Greta Thunberg is another positive roll-model and she has been threatened by similar monsters to those that Rajbhandari is dealing with.

Traitor Trump, the far rights anti-Christ or one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, has also attacked Greta Thunberg.
In the end Love always triumphs over hate!
Why the capital L? What is the significance of that?
Cause it looks so much nicer that way!
This kid is my new personal hero and his story will be front and center for my Banned Books unit for my juniors this year!
This militia actually showed up with AR-15s in front of high school students who were protesting? Grown (mostly) men showing up with automatic assault weapons to take on a bunch of high schoolers?!?! Seriously?!? Automatic weapons to tamp down a protest of freshmen teenagers?!? GET. A. LIFE.
These folks are petrified without their AR15s
And even with them, as Kyle Rittenhouse showed.
Like DeSantis (who sent a heavily armed SWAT team to the house of female data scientist) they use the gun to intimidate high schoolers and women.
Its a continuation of the cowardly bullying they have been doing all their life.
And DeSantis also just picked on migrant workers in order to get votes from people who admire such stuff (of whom there would seem to be a large number in Florida)

Not grown men, dogs, liberty dogs. Bark bark.
