On April 8, I had open heart surgery to replace a heart that had a leaky valve and was regurgitating too much blood. I didn’t have any symptoms of heart failure, but the tests were clear. I needed a new heart valve. Given the nature and location of the ailment , there was no minimally invasive way to fix the problem. The doctor had to saw open my chest to get direct access to my heart.
And so it was done. To my surprise, the broken breast cage was not painful. I spent a week heavily medicated and monitored, and the worst effect was my inactivity, which left me unable to rise from a chair and walking as though my legs weighed a ton each. When I leave the intensive care unit, I will spend at least a week doing physical therapy.
I’m immensely impressed by the sophisticated nature of medical technology. I’m even more impressed by the dedication of the young people who staff our hospitals and their spirit of service.

Welcome back! I’m glad your experience was a good one.

I was never worried. You had a wonderful doctor. It takes a while to recover when they ‘cut you open like. a suitcase,” which is what your doctor told me, two years later when the incision still was uncomfortable… but it is such a miracle. Glad you are back.

Great news! Though not surprising. Modern medicine is amazing. (I had open heart surgery several years ago–quadruple by-pass. Not that big a deal for my overall health, but saved my life). And you are amazing. You are a leader in true education “reform.” Thanks for all you do!

What wonderful news! Rest well but also work hard on your recovery, if you don’t mind the seemingly contradictory advice. We need your voice.
I wonder if the men and women who attended to your care looked like the real America. When I had a nasty bout with sepsis a few years ago, well over half of the nurses, et cetera, were people of color, and over half were women. (I’m a white male) The lesson I drew: we MUST educate every child to his or her fullest potential….if only to save our own lives!

Dear Diane,
My Jewish grandmother told her son, who was about to depart for air force combat in Europe, “Seymour, fly low and fly slow.” This protective advice would have gotten him killed.
But I share her ludicrous, loving advice with you. For the time being: Please fly low and fly slow. Come back in good health to engage in many more missions.

So glad you are doing well. I have had two open heart surgeries to repair valves and found the healing of the sternum to be most painful, so I am happy to hear you have not had that experience! I may be facing a third surgery this summer, so I hope I will have as painless an experience as you. Happy healing.

So glad they kept you out of it long enough for you to be able to look at the bright side. Here’s to a easy peasy physical therapy. Like Fred said, “fly low and slow.”

Goodness, Diane! So glad your procedure was successful! I had the same thing done 5 years ago this month. (All’s been good since then, but I still have occasional “twinges” in my chest, where the rib cage was wired shit after surgery.) Best to you for a full recuperation and a long, healthy life ahead! Dear Diane,
Wishing you a speedy and full recovery and look forward to reading many of your insightful comments and blogs and perhaps meeting in the future.
We met when I was the Supervisor/Director of Literacy in Jersey City Public Schools and participated in ongoing conferences sponsored by the NJPSA down in Monmouth County. At the time, you had recently authored “The Reign of Error” and spoke on the issues we face on the privatization of public education in favor of charter schools which unfortunately is still ongoing and even worse, particularly in Florida which has become my primary residence since my second retirement.
Having worked for the NYC Department of Education for 36 years and having taught at NYU Steinhardt School before working in Jersey City, and having been raised in Brooklyn, I believe we have lots in common and would love to discuss further.
Needless to say, another factor we both have in common, is that in January of 2019, I was diagnosed with mitral valve regurgitation and came up to our apartment in Cliffside Park that March to have the amazing robotic minimally invasive surgery with Dr. Didier Loulmet at NYU, my Alma Mater. I was lucky as my situation allowed me to have a mitral valve repair and not replacement and understand full well what you are going through. I had consults with three top doctors in NYC before deciding on doing this and luckily was able to have it done this way.
You will get through this and gradual exercise will increase as you feel stronger. I was able to travel to France and Israel just three months after my surgery and was utterly amazed at what good doctors, staff and hospitals can accomplish.
Please feel free to contact me should be interested in discussing this or any educational matter more deeply.
Respectfully,
Deanna M. Albert, Ph.D.
