We went to dinner last night at my son’s house, especially to see the grandsons ages 7 and 14. I sat next to the older boy during dinner. The boys are tested regularly at their schools, which both are half in-person and half-remote. As we finished dinner, my son opened his email and found a message from the older boy’s school that he had been in class with a student who tested positive.
Consequently, I will be quarantining for two weeks and hoping to dodge this bullet. My lungs are compromised by a previous very serious hospitalization for pulmonary embolism. I will be careful.
Please please be careful…..We need your voice, energy, brain, positivity etc etc etc going forward…..
Amen! Praying that you and your family will be well.
Amen, with one amendment: Epidemiologically speaking, we’re all pulling for Diane not to have positivity. As she’s wise enough to heed the expert idiots, there’s every reason to believe that bullet doesn’t have a chance. Diane, please enjoy the forced R&R to the max.
I agree with John. Please Diane, you are essential in this fight to save public education. Take care of yourself. I hope you are well and stay well!!!
I agree, we do need your voice. Stay well.
Take good care of yourself. We need you. Even in Italy!
You might enjoy the rest . . . but do take good care and eat lots of things that support your immune system. I’m also diligent . . . in my condition, if I get it, I fear it likely will kill me. CBK
Best wishes for a non eventful two weeks. We had a similar scare when our 21 year old grandson tested positive the day we saw him but did not find out till two days later. By then we had been exposed to him 3x. A long two weeks of quarantine but we were OK. Hoping for the same result for you.

Wishing you all the best. You’ll probably luck out and have no symptoms.
How close were you sitting to the boy and I wonder if he had any close contact with the student that was infected?
If they were all wearing masks and kept their distance, the odds improve that your nephew is okay and you will be, too.
My daughter is hell-bent to have a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with her family and her husband’s. I’m going to share this with her. She’s even offered to ahve her husband set up a separate tent outside where I’d eat alone and then join everyone for a walk after the feast. I do not like the idea.
Good afternoon Diane and everyone,
First, Diane, I do hope you dodge this and all turns out well with everyone involved. Lloyd, every day my husband and I go to work at school and the kids are masked and distanced in the classroom. Yet, they remove their masks in the bathrooms and hallways. They sit facing each other less than 6 feet away in lunch with no mask on and talk. They do NOT social distance in the hallways and no effort is made to force them to do so. They walk out of the bathrooms without having properly washed their hands. I watch this happen every day and so does my husband and we work at different schools. Under NO circumstances should people think that kids are “safe” at school and that they are obeying all of the “rules” and that being around them is fine. And, yes, that means YOUR children.
Maybe stay home and enjoy a take out dinner yourself, then join them for a walk afterwards. Less stress for the family and for you too.
Take care of yourself, Diane. Your work is so important and valuable to all of us. Remember that you are in our thoughts and prayers. God bless you. William Cozart
Wishing you are unscathed from this contact. Continued good health, Diane.
We ALL will be waiting to hear that you are fine after the 14 days are finished. Eat healthy, rest and know that there are many on this site who care for you. You may be in quarantine but you are never alone.
Stay well. Order adaptogen tea from Teeccino.com. It really helps with the immune system.
Thinking of you Diane. Stay well.
Crossing fingers for you. But keep blogging during the quarantine!
I find this very distressing.

Please check with your doctors FIRST to consider taking oil of oregano daily to help with your immune system and viral/bacterial homeostasis.
Holding you and your continued health in my heart. You are so important to so many, many people!
Sending healing vibrations your way. Colloidal silver works great as a daily supplement and also to gargle with to provide antibacterial elements to your throat. Of course, check with your doctor – who hopefully has an expansive knowledge of healing and health. Be safe and be healthy.
Please be well. Err heavily on the side of caution. We need you.
Don’t be afraid to cut back your “workday” to 15 hours. Watch the Marx Bros. Enjoy the Trump collapse. (Did you notice he’s gone gray? The golden goose is now the old gray goose. Still doesn’t go well with orange mask.)
Also, take an injection of Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther.
Hope all is well. It is better to error on the side of caution than throw caution to the wind. Take care and be well.
I’m feeling like I would if one of the closest members of my family got this news. Be well and listen to Fred’s advice above and discount any hearsay recommendations about teas, herbs, etc. Read a good book outside of your comfort zone instead. Please check with your physician. Sending as many good vibes as possible.
Very sorry you have to go through this. Glad you are being careful.
I’ll be thinking of you. Take care.
Sending love and bope
Diane With Arthur, I’m sending bope . . . scads and scads of bope. :o} CBK
Thoughts and prayers are with you, Diane. It is so easy for this to happen. Do all you can to stay well and healthy – we need you. I have asthma and I need to be ultra careful, so no big family Thanksgiving this year.
Sending love and light your way, Diane Ravitch. We already lost one warrior this year when we lost RBG. We refuse to lose you!
The Song of Wandering Aengus
I went out to the hazel wood,
Because a fire was in my head,
And cut and peeled a hazel wand,
And hooked a berry to a thread;
And when white moths were on the wing,
And moth-like stars were flickering out,
I dropped the berry in a stream
And caught a little silver trout.
When I had laid it on the floor
I went to blow the fire a-flame,
But something rustled on the floor,
And someone called me by my name:
It had become a glimmering girl
With apple blossom in her hair
Who called me by my name and ran
And faded through the brightening air.
Though I am old with wandering
Through hollow lands and hilly lands,
I will find out where she has gone,
And kiss her lips and take her hands;
And walk among long dappled grass,
And pluck till time and times are done,
The silver apples of the moon,
The golden apples of the sun.
Thanks, LeftCoast. Here, my retelling of the Irish folk tale on which Yeats based this poem:
Those European folktales are all over swans.mafter seeing a few trumpeters in my birdwatching days, I can understand that.
Thanks for sharing this. You are an educational role model for so many people–being a COVID practices role model is one more way to serve.
As an Election Challenger on a small, unventilated Absentee Vote counting board, two of our counters (Republicans both) said they ‘weren’t into’ masking. I spent 10 hours with them sitting two feet away. That was 11 days ago, and I’m just now feeling like my self-imposed quarantine is ending. We all need to be uber-cautious. Thanks for leading the way, as usual.
Sending you light and love.
Please take care of yourself. You are needed.
Can’t lose you.
All good wishes,
🦋🌈🌷
Sending love from Los Angeles. Please take care of yourself.
Add two more Angelenos to the list! You are a guiding light, Diane, to my husband and me, both Burbank public school teachers. Sending love, gratitude, and good wishes your way today and every day!
Praying for your health. We need you healthy!!!! My fear is seeing my granddaughter when she comes home from college for the holidays. Trying to keep her from friends and family members just so I can be safe seems a bit unrealistic. This is such a stressful time!

I’m so sorry you’re having to quarantine, but hope you’ll bulk up on zinc and vitamin C and avoid the virus. Take care.
Thinking of you and hoping that you are virus-free. Be well, good person.
Thinking of you and hoping you and your entire family escape this potential exposure.
Wishing you all the best and hoping for a negative test! My husband and I are both HS teachers—our entire family of five tested positive ten days ago. First symptom was literally just a sniffle and only my husband ever had a fever—and that was on Day 4. The number of mild or asymptomatic people walking around spreading this is mind-boggling. Please watch yourself—runny nose, fatigue, loss of smell were our first symptoms.
Hoping both you and your grandson weren’t exposed and remain healthy. Thank you for taking precautions just in case. We need you healthy and strong for the upcoming battles!
Wish you well.
Vitamin D, vitamin D, vitamin D. Good Luck with your quarantine.
Hoping for a negative test!
Prayers for you and family, Diane!
Prayers for you and family, Diane.
Be safe–am thinking of you —
All the best. Thinking about you and saying a prayer for you and your family that you are all fine.
Hope you’re feeling good and healing soon.
Hoping for a boring two weeks for you and your family!
LOL. Yes.
Wishing you the best & reiterate the Vitamin D from Darrell. Also, Vitamin C & Zinc (but not too much Zinc–consult your doctor. I will email you “The People’s Pharmacy” newsletter that reiterates this. I have found them to be reliable. Please stay healthy & sane!
Good luck, Diane. With students masked and socially distanced, all should be fine for your grandson, you and his family.
And many are right…. Vitamin D! That actually has medical research behind it! Hugs. I have every confidence all will be well.
The students were masked and socially distant. Two were later discovered to be infected. I think I’ll be fine.
I wish you and your family good health. 😷🙂
It MAY make your spirits a little bit better knowing that so very many people wish you the best. We are quarantined where I stay now reside,, a lock down. Someone in our building caught the virus. Wishing you the best and hope and pray you co not get the virus. I think I can understand a bit. I am 91 and so feel that if I should get it; Katy bar the door.
Take good care of yourself, Gordon.
I’m so sorry!! Best wishes to you and your family, praying this will pass you on by!
I am older than you, with compromised lungs and more.
My MD visit last week ended up with this written notice:
“Contact your health care provider IMMEDIATELY day or night if you should experience any of the following or go to the ER after normal clinic hours (8am-5pm) if you have any of these symptoms. Six symptoms are listed but the two most relevant to Covid-19 are:
–Fever of 100.4 F (38 C) or higher, chills (possible signs of infection).
–Sudden onset of shortness of breath or chest pain.
Faithfully take your take and record your temperature morning and evening. If you have a pulse and blood oxygen meter for your finger, keep an accurate record of that too, preferably at about the same time each day.
May the forces of protection against this virus be with you and yours.
Thank you, Laura and all!
Hoping you keep well.
We just cancelled an intended Thanksgiving gathering at our home in Claremont, CA with old Brooklyn friends out of worry over the rising numbers. One member of that family was recently exposed to someone at work who tested positive. We also had a plumber come to the house last week and only put on a mask when he saw that I had one on to greet him. In the time he was in my kitchen, the mask slipped below his nose, and he eventually removed it to finish his work. Just before he left, he told me that his two firefighter sons had already been infected and his police officer son contracted it last week. The incoming Biden administration feels like the light at the end of the tunnel, but we aren’t there. We are weary of isolation and are tempted to trust our close friends. Your note helps to remind that trust has little to do with these decisions and of the importance of staying vigilant. Please take care. You are too important to so many. I so appreciate my daily dose of your insights, and I often share them. They are great reminders of the two superwoman role models who were my neighbors so long ago. Prayers for you both and your extended families.
Sigh. Sending an armload of prayers for protection for you and your loved ones. Godspeed…
Diane
Whew. Take care and rest.
Hopefully the tracers and your doctor deem you safer as you are a “second circle” or tier away from the tested positive student (that child to your grandchild to you) – and hopefully the children were distanced with desk barriers (three-sided protectors) and masked routinely (class, lunch, lines, bus…). From the previous post, an “armload of prayers” sounds good from all.
Get rest and I hope you feel stay healthy! From a long time reader and fan.
Thank you.
Keep us updated. Stay strong and rest.
Diane,
I wish you the best during your quarantine. I bet you have a big pile of books that has been waiting for you to read them.
A week ago I was diagnosed with pulmonary embolisms. I, too, feel the vulnerability and our dependence on the decent behavior of others.
Ken, I’m an expert on pulmonary embolisms.
Ken–
Be well, please, & a happy, healthy Thanksgiving to you & to your family.
This is the third such story I’m hearing from a contact this week. Sending hopes that you and your family all remain well!
It’s laudable to take precautions and self-quarantine, even when the risk of previous transmission to you from your son’s classmate is fairly low. Thank you. You are responsible because you care about others and social good. Don’t get too extreme and inject yourself with bleach, though. I know that’s what the Lamest Duck Ever once said, but I don’t think it’s particularly good advice. Heck, I am still trying to figure out covfefe — bleach is covidfefe.
Art and humor…
Much love and light to you, in this time, and always, Diane.
Diane stay healthy and safe!
Good luck Diane,
I’ll be thinking of you!
Erich
Q is better than Covid. It will pass over. We are all rooting for you.
Love, prayers, and all my finger-crossed best wishes to you and your loved ones.
Diane, you are our North Star!
At least there is testing, tracing & more testing happening in your grandson’s school.
The odds are good!
You’re going to be fine.👍🏼
Many of us live in & around out-of-control raging virus.
I can almost see it (it’s impacting us that much).
Keeping safe and healthy is absolutely frightening.
It is crazy-making how quickly the possibilities pop up.
Add Vitamin D3 & Vitamin C.
Diane
If love can keep you safe, you and yours will come through unscathed. Please know how many of us will hold you in our thoughts.
(A nice hot toddy in this chilly weather might be a good accompaniment before bed, too!)
“Maybe the purpose of being here, wherever we are, is to increase the durability and occasions of love among and between peoples.” ~ June Jordan
Diane, you are much loved by parents in Boston , Parents Across America, and NPE. We’re sending our love to you and Mary.
Wishing you well. Take care of yourself!
My family member had a tough case of covid, with difficulty breathing, chest pain, fever, aches, blurry vision, and loss of taste. This person is recovered now. Here is what was taken during the illness and for sometime after: Advair (inhaled steroids) and low-dose daily aspirin (to reduce potential of micro-clotting).
I also agree with the Vitamin D, particularly fish oil form, especially important beforehand.
Thinking of you–
Thank you for taking this step and quarantining. You are wonderful! I wish you all the best and all negative Covid tests. 💞💞
Thinking of you, Diane! Immune system, you can do this!
I hope this brings you some happiness and joy (this is one of my go to songs when I need some peace and relaxation):
Great piece, Greg. This group is one of the most exciting to us old-time musicians, who typically are not really interested in a piece of music until it can be found in someone’s 1930s recording.
Giddens in particular is so very creative. We watched her perform with the Nashville Ballet a couple of years ago.
Please take care and drink lots of water (good filtered water without chlorine in it).
Prayers that you stay well and do not catch this.
(I’m trying to avoid catching this and have lots of family members in our household so the potential for exposure is high. I’ve been taking Quercetin –along with extra Vitamin D and zinc. Quercetin is a plant bioflavinoid and some research suggests it breaks the viral wall of a virus).
Stay safe and be well . Your voice is needed .
Knowing you, as a daily reader, this can only mean you will be posting more than ever because you are stuck inside. It seems like nothing can slow you down, and thank goodness for that! I’m sending all my positive thoughts your way (and the way of everyone else with this/or possibly with this insidious disease). Take your ZINC, as I keep hearing.
I’m finding it difficult to believe that the vast surge in Covid cases we’re seeing right now isn’t related to our having opened schools, in part or wholly, throughout the country. The number of new cases reported daily has been increasing steadily for some time now, and we are bearing down on the 200,000 new cases per day mark.
Bob . . . schools opening, yes; but also Trump’s rallies all over the country. CBK
Bob, here’s the other crazy thing…
The virus is going off the charts….thousands are dying… and what’s Trump doing….
He’s going …golfing.
It’s obscene.
Now, I have nothing against golfing. I was on the high school team for one season and played crappy on some beautiful courses all for free.
But golf is a significant commitment of time. Hours.
There’s a course walking distance from my house.
But I DON”T HAVE THE TIME. Papers to grade, stuff to fix and, of course, friends and family I want to be with.
How is this guy Trump finding the time amidst a national crisis?
And, even more astounding, millions of fellow citizens saying, oh sure, this sort of behavior is fine. This alleged “leader” of the so-called free world, goofing off.
Meanwhile, that public school down the road…those kids and their teachers, hell, no, they ain’t working hard enough!
Make America Hard Again on them!
And yesterday the Million Maggots March was held in Washington and Trump drove by it–on his way to go golfing. LOL.
Bob, Trump’s obsession with attention at any price is costing lives and millions are willing to pay the price. You could never make this s**t up.
We must be the laughingstock of the world. Bet, many Americans will claim to be Canadians once they can travel outside the US.
The rest of us go to the end of the earth to avoid Covid, but still end up being exposed. The fear one feels just thinking about the pain and possible death is unreal. Even rational, educated, level-headed people are dealing with huge concern and even panic. I find myself speaking out at businesses & patrons who put us all at risk by violating the simplest basic precautions in stores. Our kids are warning me to stop…there is a way to talk to people without sending them into a rage….I’m counting on it. The teacher comes out in me more often these days.
Statistically, even if coming in contact with a positive person, are still in our favor of not catching it.
Diane, your strength, vim & vigor daily, will get you through this.
RX, extra rest & pampering for a little while.
We just know!
Back during the Bush Jr., administration, by stepdaughter spent some time living in France. Anti-American feeling was so great there, at the time, that she did, in fact, sometimes tell random people whom she encountered that she was Canadian.
Prayers. Lots of prayers.
As we are getting closer to Thanksgiving, which will be an indoor event, this article in the LA Times should be read by everyone because a “small wedding” lead to many cases and was the subject of an extensive tracing effort. https://www.latimes.com/science/story/2020-11-12/covid-19-spread-at-thanksgiving-holiday-gatherings-could-be-like-maine-wedding
Diane, I hope that you and your loved ones stay safe and healthy. I wish the same for everyone reading this blog.
Please take care of yourself, Diane. Your voice will be so important now that we have a chance to work with a president who supports public education.
Diane and everyone out there, be a hero like this man!

GregB: I LOVED the video and sent it onward to others. We need a chuckle at this time.
I’ll work on translating the one at the bottom of the post. It’s just as funny. These are made by Merkel’s government, not professional comedians, as public service announcements.
We need something like this as public service announcements for democracy (small d) and for what’s going on in government . . . regular and consistent . . . sort of like “Radio Free America.” CBK
Diane, thinking of one more effective treatment for treating anything related to our crazy times…..
Watch THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW on PBS.
RX: Laugh Therapy.
As Bill Clinton might say, I feel your pain. My daughter was diagnosed over a week ago and I was briefly exposed to her before we knew of it. she has been sick but not seriously. I am on my ninth day of quarantine and keeping my fingers crossed. Good luck to us both!
