Leonie Haimson has a weekly radio show called “Talk Out of School” on WBAI in New York City. She invited Denisha Jones and me to discuss the election results and their implications for education, on the day after the election.
Denisha is a lawyer, an early childhood education advocate, and a professor. She is also a member of the board of Network for Public Education.
I really hope the main topic was the need to get students back in school.
Hi FLERP. 🙂 I don’t think that’s happening soon. 🤧🤒😷
Thank you for this lively, informative exchange of ideas from people that truly understand the issues. I would love to see an interview with Dr.Jill Biden on what she believes are the important issues facing education today.
I enjoyed hearing the discussion on quality preschool instruction. It was interesting that New York’s privatized preschools have become an expensive boondoggle of waste and over expenditure while Massachusetts’ program is a better run publicly operated program. Denisha Jones would the perfect person to direct a national preschool program. A huge mistake, IMHO, would be to turn this this initiative over to the “magic market” that largely know how to make money for the right people, and not help students.
I thought the discussion on testing is likely what will happen in a Biden administration. They will most likely not eliminate the standardized testing madness, but maybe they can reduce the impact on schools.
I enjoyed the discussion on integration which both parties have abandoned. I would personally like to see the federal government offer school districts with diverse students grants to encourage them to desegregate their schools. Likewise, I would like to see Biden end the federal slush fund for charter schools. As we know, charter schools enhance segregation. I would also like to see the federal government compensate public schools for the stranded costs they must pay when charters are established. Charters should also have to compensate public schools when charters close and send students back to public schools. These changes would help public schools stay afloat when charters open.
a deeply necessary moment: I would like to see Biden and this new admin. ADMIT that charter schools enhance segregation
