Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has canceled the State GOP Convention, which was scheduled for next week.
In light of the dangerous health situation in Houston, the mayor said it was unsafe.
Good to know that local elected officials take the pandemic seriously, even though the president does not.
This is good news. The hospitals in Houston are starting to get overwhelmed.
Irony of state rights is we are in a pandemic that needs Federal government to govern but separation of powers in Federal system works against unity in fighting the invading virus.
Mayor with power to cancel a statewide convention is not state right’s issue but local jurisdiction verses state.
The Houston Mayor decision to cancel the convention is an example of separation of power if the decision is upheld in practice and/or in court. Mayor’s decision I want to cheer–as I believe it will save lives. But, saved lives does not make separation of the governing powers a concept I always will support.
The flip side of the Houston Mayors win would be if the Mayor stood against wearing of masks order by the state’s governor. Then I would be on opposite side of the Houston Mayor’s action.
Your civics class lessons on separation of powers is being made meaningful in the actions of the govern to act or be blocked from acting in this pandemic invasion emergency. Modifying the doctrine of separation of powers might save lives in a future pandemic.
Mayor Sylvester Turner is a Democrat.
Texas is currently in a race with Florida to see who can overtake NY as the state with the most infections.
NY has a big lead (almost 200k), but both Texas and Florida have ramped up their infections to 10k per day.
Both (nay, all three) states are run by stable geniuses.
At least Abbott had the guts to issue a mask order to the entire state. Florida is still in denial. DeSantis is too busy kissing Trump’s ring to lead the state from disaster.
His ring?
Uranus also has a ring.
SDP,
In a month, at the current rate, Texas and Florida will surpass New York. Isn’t that what they always wanted?
The Lone SARS state of mind
Texas has the 3rd lowest testing rate in the country. Abbott subscribe to trumps ostrich theory (if we stick our heads in the sand, then we don’t know or if we don’t test, then we will have fewer confirmed cases. The Texas Governor has been fighting Mayor Turner and County Judge Hildago since this started. Hildago wanted a more strict mask order earlier and abbott overruled her. It has been a political circus.
