Peter Greene explains here how Trump came to Betsy DeVos’ rescue when Congress tried to stop her from punishing students who had been scammed by predatory colleges.
DeVos wanted to withdraw an Obama-era program that helped students who incurred debts to fraudulent colleges. A court intervened to stop her. DeVos considers the students buried by debt to be free-loaders. Congress rebuked DeVos in a rare bipartisan vote. Trump issued his very first veto, simultaneously supporting DeVos and rejecting the thousands of students who had been defrauded.
This is outrageous.

This is right up there with trying to repeal ACA during the pandemic. And quashing or at least halving the $600/ wk fed supplement to too-low-to-pay-bills state unemployment ins benefits while unemployment is running at Great Depression levels.
Doesn’t the GOP get it? Why aren’t they listening to their usual fave buddies the economists, who have been telling them in unison for months that the only way to eke out even a huge recession & super-long recovery (as opposed to a ’30’s-style economic collapse) is to pump cash into hands of mid/wkg classes? Do they not see the handwriting on the wall? What happens when 60-70% of the population is unable to pay rent/ mtg/ utilities & has to line upfor hrs to get free food??
Oh, I’m going to answer my own question. What happens is what had to happen in the ’30’s: massive govt programs providing work for fed pay. In our era it will be repairing/ rebuilding infrastructure (incl not only roads/ bridges/ rail/ airports, but also rebldg crumbling schools, & laying cable for new band-width), build factories for American-made PPE for next pandemics, fed-pd childcare allowing adults to do that fed work or return to what going concerns remain, fed workers teaching the mid/wkg classes how to make their own clothes & grow their own food in the interim [my grandmother did that in the ’30’s]… etc.
It’s possible we can’t avoid that future. But this is not the ’30’s: we’re dealing w/what may be a 1-2-yr huge slowdown, w/ a swift ramping up thereafter. So we’re at a turning point… It’s [just] possible we can bridge the gap, use fed funds [loans] to tide over small businesses & individuals, help them stay afloat long enough torestart.
Trumpistas/ GOP conservatives, if we let them, will kill off the possibilities in the name of ideology, & doom us to a decade like the ’30’s. We need to trounce them in November.
I just can’t wait until DeVos is sent packing back to her grizzly-infested domain. She’s yet another clueless billionaire fleecing the public with her jive grift. She and her husband – Dick – will have a lot to answer for in the great Amway in the sky….
