A few days ago, I had a Zoom meeting with educators at Rutgers University, where I was invited to talk about education and social justice. Of course we talked about the pandemic and what happens next. But the theme of the day was equity.

I saw and listened to this session. Your command of the issues, narrative gifts, and candor were evident throughout. As a viewer, I did not find this session anything like a conference talk.

What’s important, according to Diane Ravitch:
“Some grownup loves them a lot and takes care of them.”
Amen
And I’m with Laura. Diane Ravitch is the most articulate off-the-cuff speaker I know. How does one account for this? Well, simple. She knows what she’s talking about.

Two things about this: First, one of the things I love about Diane’s work is that she continually truth checks the Disrupters. Here she does it again, pointing out they are saying that distance learning will be the new normal when we return, when the fact is that parents emphatically want real classrooms with real teachers in them actually doing the teaching.
And here, an important takeaway:
“We can’t have the recovery of the economy built on the backs of the children.” And that’s what the politicians are going to try to do. So, we’re going to need the Resistance, big time.

Oh, and what she has to say about standardized testing in this piece is the smartest take on it I’ve ever heard.

Hilarious. Incisive. Utterly devastating critique.
