The College Board relies on the revenues produced by its premier product, the SAT.
What to do in a global pandemic?
Normally the College Board is very obsessed with test security.
But now it has decided students can take the SAT online at home.
How will they know who is answering the questions?
They won’t!
Diane,
It’s a well-known fact that nobody cheats during a pandemic.
LOL
there s actually a scientific term for it
“Pandemic honesty”: honesty that breaks out during a pandemic.
Having a Sr in HS, she has gotten a lot of emails from the testing companies. I believe that for the tests to be taken at home, one must have their camera enabled so that the testing company can tell if you are alone and following “procedures”. I find it hilarious that these companies are so desperately grabbing for money and market share when most of the colleges are now saying that they won’t be using the scores for the next 2 years. The College Board and the other testing companies are vampires….this pandemic has opened up the coffin and is putting a stake through it’s cold and evil heart. This is one business and business model that I hope disappears from the face of the earth.
LisaM,
Yes, indeed. It’s about the $$$$$.
The testing companies are dialing for dollars. Sickening.
How will they know if you’re cheating? Total invasion of privacy, that’s how. Their app will automatically turn on the camera and microphone on your computer. The camera and microphone will be enabled to sense the presence of any other living being in the room with motion and infrared detectors. All other functions on your computer will be blocked from opening. That’s David Coleman’s plan, Big Brother on steroids. I forgot in which news outlet I read about that this morning. The WaPo? The Guardian? The Times?
Oh, and how will they know if it’s you answering the questions? By having you answer “security” questions wherein you give College Board all kinds of private, personal information. What’s your full name? Your ID number? Your email, phone number, and address? Your mother’s maiden name? Your birthday? Or worse, there could be biometric identification. Put your fingerprint on the screen. Put your eyeball up to the camera. Put a biometric bracelet on your wrist… Want to get a higher education? Then you have no rights whatsoever.
All of that is very easy to “spoof” (since you can be sitting in front of the camera and someone else can be controlling the computer, who need not be in the same room, the same city or even the same country)
David Coleman has had a lot of dumb ideas , but this is one of his dumbest.
But then again, what would you expect from an Oxfordmoron?
WaPo, LeftCoastTeacher
Remote proctors. Scary and depressing. Who would want their kids subjected to this? Just when we thought hazing was phasing out.

SAT or should I say David Coleman, doesn’t care who takes the SAT as long as SAT/he gets paid.
After all, to quote David Coleman, “No one gives a shit what you think or feel.” Interpret that and it means he doesn’t give a shit. Coleman is another narcissist.
https://theline.edublogs.org/2011/11/02/common-core-director-to-you-no-one-gives-a-st-what-you-think-or-feel/
“David Coleman, the president and chief executive officer of the College Board, as well as a trustee, earned for the 2013 fiscal year ending June 30, 2014: $690,854 in reportable compensation plus $43,338 in other compensation from the organization and related organizations. Total: $734,192.
If no one takes the test this year, how much will David Coleman get paid?
In every pandemic there are SAT (SuckersAndTakers). Shameful that they will continue to peddle this when so many colleges and universities no longer require it. It’s time for the rest to fall in line.
It has been time for a long, long time. Evidently, we have a lot of college administrators who are slow learners. Enough. End the SAT (Scam Academic Testing).
Should help ensure two things:
Kids who come from households that are not so technologically advanced or exquisitely equipped will further be kept in place by America’s Great Gatekeeper;
Savvy Hollywood types will post pictures of their children in camera range of the SAT snoops–showing them playing tennis, golf or engaged in sculling–to accompany college applications that are slipped to admissions officers for fast track Fall entry this year.
BINGO. One more way to distinguish the haves from the have-nots, and, of course, still get paid.
If parents post videos of their kid playing tennis within camera range, maybe they can convince the college admissions people their kid can play tennis and take a test at the same time.
Game, test and match!
What could be more impressive?
TAGO! How about even more impressive things a student could work on while taking the test: cooking breakfast, lunch & dinner (it might take that long to take the SAT!); reading War & Peace; diapering the baby (because mom is working) & so on & so forth…
reality
There is no depth to which Coleman won’t sink to keep the grift rolling in.
The SCCAT. The Scholastic Common Core Adequacy Test
The End is Near….for the SAT (We hope)

I actually think this will do the SAT in because some security expert somewhere is almost certainly going to demonstrate how insecure this is, which will make the College Board look like the idiots they are.
Can’t wait!
These morons don’t even grok how easy it is to control a computer remotely. And there are dozens of other ways in which such a test-taking scenario could be scammed. A cell phone mounted behind the computer for texting answers, for example.
This is an invitation to very simply accomplished cheating. And surely even College Board and its dim leader, Lord Coleman, appointed Decider for the Rest of Us by Master Gates, know this. But they don’t care. Anything to keep the $$$$$$ rolling in.

Anyone know what the ACT is doing?
No college is going to the scores of the “at home SAT” seriously.
Off thread, but NEWS FLASH: of course, WH it wants to “open up the country again.”
(How many new cases nationally today? How many deaths?) But–get this–some of what is “wanted” reopened are…churches & bars!
As Mike Myers’ Linda character always said on SNL: “Talk amongst yourselves!”
The crazy thing about “reopening” the country is that we still don’t have enough tests nor do have a cure.
But, but, but the economy, what about the economy??
“economy” is code for the 1% or people who make at least $1M annually that are already benefiting from more than 80% of tax changes provided through the legislation which will give peons like me a mere $1200 to survive during the COVID-19 pandemic, because God forbid multi-millionaires and billionaires should lose money.
And never mind all the lives that will be lost from “re-opening” too soon…
We continue to witness capitalism gone wild.
Another sadly predictable riff by the 1% to soak the middle class…with the attendant benefit of keeping the profitable data spigot flowing. Coleman is ever the dutiful servant of privatizer and kleptocrat alike.
The sheer audacity is breathtaking. Marketing their test to students and their parents by the millions knowing full-well the results will be completely ignored by colleges and universities. In comparison it makes the fraud of Trump University look like child’s play.
Excellent point.

I took one of those driver improvement courses online and they have voice verification checkpoints throughout the exam. I’m sure they will find a way to verify – there’s a reason why we say “big brother is watching” via our numerous internet devices.
