Several days ago, I was interviewed by Dr. Randy Tobler of radio station KFTK in St. Louis about SLAYING GOLIATH, which is pro-public school and anti-privatization.
When the interview was scheduled by my publisher, I wasn’t familiar with the station or the host.
As I waited a few minutes for the show to start, I heard an advertisement for Rush Limbaugh, whose syndicated talk show would air later that day.
As a defector from conservative think tanks, I started to worry whether this interview would be unpleasant. I remember years ago being on a talk show in Chicago with a foul-mouthed shock jock and feeling trapped. I remembered a “debate” on FOX with Judge Napolitano and a right wing hater of public schools, teachers, and unions.
As I waited for the show to start, these bad memories resurfaced.
But I was in for a wonderful surprise. I had a great talk with Randy. He told me that everyone in St. Louis is obsessed with vouchers and charters, and he invited me to respond. I learned that his father taught music at a public school, and we hit it off. We discussed the hot topics, and he understood that vast amounts of money are wasted on consultants. He believes that teachers should have more autonomy. I expect he heard that from his dad.
We ended up having a good conversation, and I felt that he was one of the few radio interviewers who actually read the book. I can’t tell you how often I have been interviewed by people who have not read the book. They ask uninformed questions, and it is frustrating.
I enjoyed talking to Randy Tobler.

Terrific! So glad you have a good conversation. It’s so needed.
Thank you.

Randy was uncommly well informed in addition to be a receptive reader of your book. Good one.

This is our country, talk radio is (and has been for decades) about 98% far right wing/conservative and mostly flame throwers and hate mongers like Limbaugh, Hannity, Mike Savage, Lionel, etc., ad (very) nauseam. Diane lucked out that she was being interviewed by a relatively civilized and informed conservative, I didn’t think there were any left. Too much of the media is controlled by libertarians who want to take us back to the 1920s or was it the 1820s.

ad nauseam is a good description: traveling into the SE part of our state to see my father in years before he died, I would leave the city and then little by little have trouble finding music radio stations, while the angry far right talk radio stations seemed to multiply.

Thank you for continuing to have these conversations with conservatives. I am a public school teacher, union leader, and conservative. I’m even the chairwoman of my county’s Republican Central Committee. People usually struggle with my associations, to say the least. When I explain the sheer waste of tax dollars and rampant fraud in the corporate charter schools, conservative leaning people become infuriated that the “privatization” movement is being less than truthful. So, again, thank you.

Sayrs, Does your county have any Gulen charter schools?

Conservatives should be concerned about the loss of economic multiplier effect when local tax dollars leave the community for the pockets of distant charter school owners. If local conservatives enjoyed the impact of Walmart on Main Street… then disregard.
Gates and Walton heirs fund a Catholic school chain that. has spread to 17 states. Media report the chain purchases Common Core curriculum and uses blended learning (computer instruction) i.e. more community dollars going to Silicon Valley and Wall Street.

One of the best interviews I’ve heard or read in a long, long time. Readers of this blog: take the time to listen to this. Outstanding. Great interviewer, brilliant interviewee.
Here’s what I love about this: the insistence on the importance of teacher (and doctor) autonomy. THIS REALLY NEEDS TO BE MORE WIDELY UNDERSTOOD.
My hat’s off to Randy Tobler. What a great model, this interview is, of actual productive discussion between folks on the right and the left.
