Dountonia Batts, Jitu Brown, and Keith Benson: regarding your panel discussion upon charter schools and black exploitation–in Missouri we have a current member of our State board of education, who served as president for many of his 26 years from 1991 to 2017, after which he spent one year not on the board. Among his accomplishments was his 2007 racist rant at the black students who had gathered enough door to door signatures to have made the takeover of SLPS illegal. (It was successful, anyway, and caused a 12,000 student shift to largely unsuccessful charter schools.) During his years of service, his family acquired the Duck Boat franchise, now under litigation which includes them related to one of the death trips—17 people in this one— (SALTZ, MONGELUZZI, BARRETT & BENDESKY, P.C. have an office in Philadelphia) HERSCHEND FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT CORPORATION, d/b/a RIDE THE
DUCKS are among the defendants…their ownership covered 2004-2017… after one year, the republican governor reappointed Peter Herschend, in his eighties, to serve until he would be close to ninety. A black senator, Jamillah Nasheed tried to block the reappointment—Herschend had testified on behalf of a 75 year old friend who was sentenced for five years that he had changed…..he no longer needed to download 174,000 images and 4800 videos of child pornography…Herschend announced to all the parents, students, and gunowners of Missouri that his friend “now exudes qualities of the Boy Scout Law, like trustworthy, brave and reverent.”
Nasheed led the effort in the Missouri Senate to block the appointment of Peter Herschend from moving forward, forcing the governor to withdraw Herschend’s name from consideration. However, days after the Senate adjourned, Parson re-appointed Herschend to the same post, using a legal loophole to manipulate the State Board of Education to the detriment of St. Louis schools.
My question is…..if I go to Philadelphia at the end of March……any chance I could have five minutes to present what I know about Herschend…My characterization of his racist attitude towards the st. louis students…..now thirty years old, is only my opinion, but the math concerning what changed the non charter population from 35,000 to less than 23 thousand is pretty accurate. The takeover was legal…..whether it should have been or not.
Bad punctuation on my part made it look like (SALTZ, MONGELUZZI, BARRETT & BENDESKY, P.C. have an office in Philadelphia) might have been defendants……they are the firm listed as bringing the lawsuit to the defendants, which includes (or included) HERSCHEND FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT CORPORATION. The two Capitalized groups are in opposition. from Missouri website for the state government….Peter F. Herschend, Branson, was first appointed to the State Board of Education in December 1991. He was reappointed for new terms in November 1999 and October 2007. He left the board in July 2017 but was reappointed in 2018. Herschend is founder and co-owner of Herschend Family Entertainment Corp., which owns Silver Dollar City and other entertainment properties. Before his appointment to the State Board, Herschend served 12 years on the Branson Board of Education.
Herschend’s term will expire on July 1, 2023.
one more additional set of details….not actually caused by the 2007 takeover of slps….but an indication of the mind set, especially of St. Louis professional politicians……
Interactive census results in 2000 (population 348,191) in 2010, down to 319,294. loss of 28,894.
Loss of white population: 12,401, 8.12%. Loss of black population: 21,106, 11.84%.
Loss of female population: 19,500. Loss of male population: 9,397
Why would twice as many females be driven out of St. Louis than males? I wonder whether there will be anything to counteract that trend when the 2020 figures arrive. Are these trends happening in other cities? Are females more likely to exit where charter schools are taking over?
St. Louis reaction to my gathering of information was enthusiastically expressed:Cajanek Spielmacher26 wrote: ↑13 Jan 2020 13:18 pm
🙄 So MANY WORDS , SO LITTLE SUBSTANCE!
I replied…
SO FEW WORDS……such a loud shout of I do not give a hoot about whether somebody who was racking up money from death machines and going to court to defend his friend who was sentenced to ten years in jail for downloading pornography has had his membership on the state board re-established. https://interact.stltoday.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1350778&sid=45bbb04281ec4ce51d8afdc21ea6887f

gosh….this is just awful for me….
Inappropriate and inconsistent?
The pd has long been protective of Peter Herschend…..it might have been my passing along what Jamillah Kasheed discovered about the long time president of the state board of education. As Michael Jones’ ex wife might tell you……they have never been all that enthused about black women who do not know their proper place.
