Peter Greene reports that Betsy DeVos won an award from an anti-feminist women’s group. She used the occasion to lambaste public schools (again).
You won’t hear her complain about the Ohio legislators who hope to outlaw facts. You won’t hear her complain about the religious schools that use the Bible as a science textbook.

Interesting article. Neither ditzy nor demonic, just single-mindedly dedicated to a deluded agenda. Kinda like Mr Magoo.
She’s attended only private, religious schools.
the word “only” could be written in capital letters: it is this lack of “travel into unknown lands” which keeps so many private-school-created politicians absolutely sure that US public schools are nothing but wastelands; crumbling buildings filled with incompetent teachers
You mean public teachers and schools are NOT the source of everything bad?
Sure could have fooled me based on how politicians from both major parties have been badmouthing a teachers and schools for decades.
This meme started long before Betsy DevOs . Betsy…I mean Arne …Duncan talked about public schools and teachers the same way …and still does, in fact.
It is only VERY recently that a few politicians like Sanders and Warren have bucked the trend.
Of course, Obama believes they are ToofarLeft.
Supporting teachers is a Commie plot
Obama is #toofargone
And has been for quite a while

And today we have Cory Booker in the NYTImes scolding us about being too dogmatic about “public” charter schools. He uses the zip code slippery defense of “good” charters & some “good” public schools.
“As Democrats, we can’t continue to fall into the trap of dismissing good ideas because they don’t fit into neat ideological boxes or don’t personally affect some of the louder, more privileged voices in the party”.
jgrim: Here’s a “neat ideological box” Booker can think about:
A Constitutional Democracy that depends for its health and survival on the education of its citizens–an education unhindered by the curriculum limitations that come with corporations who hate being governed . . . . by ideas about the common good of those who live (wait for it) in a Constitutional Democracy. CBK
That’s one reason he is polling at 1%.
Hey let’s be fair. Obama may be a centrist but he gets some progressive points for pushing the admittedly flawed ACA to legislation. Single-payer would have been truly progressive but had insufficient support. The intermediary step of ACA has increasingly turned the public toward understanding affordable healthcare as a right. And tho O’s ed policy was the pits, I don’t see him anywhere characterizing support of pubschs & teachers unions as “too far left.”
What really jumps out at you is how she offers absolutely nothing to students and families in public schools.
Her assumption is that everyone in the country loathes public schools as much as she and her fellow ideological travelers, so it doesn’t occur to her TO offer them any practical effort or work.
She simply does nothing for almost 90% of students. If she and her team didn’t show up for work anymore there isn’t a public school kid or family in this country who would notice and she’s so far inside the narrow ed reform echo chamber this doesn’t even occur to her.
Under ed reform, the US Department of Education has turned into a student loan collection agency and a charter and voucher advertising agency. It’s a shame and I’m wondering what justifies continuing to fund it. I don’t know why they exist. If they don’t serve students in public schools, and they don’t, do we need them at all?
Agree completely on this point, Chiara. Bush and Obama and Congress have already destroyed the Dept of Ed’s legitimacy v-a-v its mission to collect & report ed data, through vast overreach. DeVos is systematically undermining its other mission, to ensure equal access to a good education. Now there’s no there there, & time to demote this cabinet back under the wing of some other exec agency to minimize its power.
Nothing is as amusing as DeVos meeting with conservative political activists who give her an award for her ideological fealty to The Cause WHILE complaining that they are somehow being silenced by ideologues.
She meets with NO ONE outside the far Right. She’s the poster child of an ideological echo chamber. No advocates for public schools are permitted anywhere near the US of Department of Education and public schools (and public school students) are almost completely excluded from their public events and advocacy. Deliberately. Not welcome there.
So sad to see that billionaire Betsy and her soul mates are struggling to be heard.
And in other headline news: “Wild bear shits in the woods.”
In other words , look good to like-wise people , and they will give you money .
my question is will betsy be around for another 4 years when trump gets reelected….most likely trump will be reelected so the question remains will betsy stay on or will trump move to another evil twin maybe eva moskowitch and her fake school theories?
