The Kentucky governor’s race is over at last.
Matt Bevin conceded defeat.
Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin on Thursday conceded to Attorney General Andy Beshear after a recanvass of votes confirmed Mr. Beshear’s victory in last week’s governor’s election.
“We’re going to have a change in the governorship based on the vote of the people,” Mr. Bevin, a Republican, said in a brief speech from a podium in front of the governor’s office.
Mr. Bevin, who had raised unspecified allegations of voter fraud and left open the option of challenging the results, instead acknowledged the victory of Mr. Beshear, a Democrat and the son of a two-time Democratic governor.
Mr. Beshear’s margin of victory remained unchanged after the recanvassing, according to the secretary of state: 5,136 votes out of more than 1.4 million cast.
Thank you, teachers of Kentucky! You remembered in November, as you promised.
Trump won the state by 30 points in 2016. Bevin’s attack on teachers and on their pensions ended in his defeat.
One down.
I’m surprised the Supreme Court didn’t step in to hand it to Bevin.
It helps if your older brother is in charge of the election. Al Gore was president.
Auuugggggghh! It could happen in 2020.
Even his staunches Republican allies kept asking him, “Voter fraud? Election fraud? Okay, so where’s your proof, Dude? Either show it to us, or concede.”
Thanks to the teachers and all who supported them in the fight for public education.
Yes. Yes. Yes. And may many more teachers, in more states defeat those who are intent of disparaging teachers.
Are you listening, Trump? Mitch?
Let’s see, there’s a valediction for situations like this; now what is it?
Oh, yes: Good Riddance!
The same day Bevin conceded, a family values, Kentucky principal who had banned books that helped gay students, was indicted on multiple child porn charges.
Yesterday was an all around bad day for hypocrites. Bevin ran a campaign based on the social Darwinist, religious right of Paul Weyrich’s creation. It was a bad day for the Koch’s
Bluegrass Institute.
Since Moscow Mitch conceded recently and said that KY will soon have a new governor, I think this is a huge sign that the GOP is facing some hard realities about voter opinions today and the tenuous hold that Republicans have on power in this country now, including his own dubious bid for re-election to the Senate. I think they are finally starting to realize what a liability Trump is to them. Give them time. The GOP did not abandon Nixon very quickly, but they did so gradually as the facts came out.
Still, you have to wonder… when the hell will the Republican party finally learn that breaking-in to offices (including computers & emails) belonging to Democrats is illegal and they are dirty tricks that are very likely to catch up with them, including when a US president asks in public for another country to do that for them?
Republicans think Trump should be allowed to get away with killing someone on Fifth Ave. The religious model for Trump’s followers is King David who had a woman’s husband killed so that he could have the woman. Boys will be boys.
Republican Peter Thiel, who spoke at the Republican national convention, said women voting in the U.S., which he claimed was a capitalistic democracy, is an oxymoron.
Congratulations, KY! Randy Wieck, may you & KY teachers & public schools now see a a long-deserved change for the better.
Send positive thoughts toward Louisiana; gubernatorial election is tomorrow, I believe, & they have a totally IQ45-backed (he just stumped for the know-nothing–really knows nothing…but doing bad–Rispone; I’ve seen bad political commercials in my time, but his are the absolute worst, even worse than the infamous Goldwater mushroom cloud commercial) candidate who will out-Jindal “Bobby” Jindal.
Reelect Gov. Bel Edwards!!!!
