Do you remember when high school student journalists were not allowed admission to a “Roundtable” between Betsy DeVos and Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin? The young journalists have been invited to cover a discussion in Columbus, Ohio, between me and renowned policy expert Bill Phillis on May 16.
Jeanne Melvin of Ohio’s Public Education Partners wrote today:
GOOD NEWS! Because of the generosilty of Diane’s readers, Dr. Laura Chapman and Dr. Linda Bricker, four student journalists and their teacher will attend the PEP event, MOVING PUBLIC EDUCATION FORWARD, in Columbus on May 16th.
I look forward to meeting these forward-thinking students.
Thank you, Laura and Linda!
Please do a review of the Internet entries with the key words Wendy Turner journalism teacher Dunbar school. I just did that and this is a remarkable teacher with the ability to inspire and support her students. The event with Devos and how her students responded is not a one off event. She is the teacher many should aspire to be. The journalism program allows for student initiated projects well beyond print. If you want to see how ridiculous it is for Devos and deformers to talk about failing and factory model schools, do the search. Also note that the students have done two follow up stories about the Devos debacle, one including a critical eye on the spin that national news outlets insisted on doing. They are keeping a record of all of the comments made about this event. We need a big shoutout to this and other journalism teachers.
a truly essential message to be hearing in days when more and more “national” media is being bought up by fact-stifling corporate interests — honest journalism will need to change venues/formats/approaches, and hearing that young people are interested in doing JUST THAT is very encouraging

thanks
Laura,
A review of the credentials of those who posted comments at the Lamplighter site article, is heartening because it shows how widely the DeVos and Bevin scheme was rebuked.
Thank you Laura and Linda!
