The Post Dispatch no longer employs an education reporter. Two writers were assigned to tell us about one democrat, who is undecided, a republican who is opposed, but refuses to discuss the issue, and mentioned “fissures within both the GOP caucus and the Legislative Black Caucus”. fair and balanced? 8 republicans were mentioned, as well as a lobbyist from Minnesota. Vague opposition was hinted at from “school groups”. My original post was ill considered, and not useful. Following your advice……I immediately came upon the article from yesterday which I had not yet read. It remained true to the spirit of the corporate foundation based dominance of the St. Louis Post Dispatch in matters related to education.

Have Missouri lawmakers gotten anything done on behalf of PUBLIC school students in the state this session?
Oh, well. Maybe next year. If there’s any time left over after voucher and charter promotions and marketing.
What will public school students get, I wonder? A bright shiny new standardized test? Another funding cut? Or how about some cheap ed tech product and devices to replace their teachers?

CO’s READ Act … so stupid. https://www.cde.state.co.us/coloradoliteracy
“Reading instruction has been a big topic of conversation this year, as policy makers grapple with the disappointing results of the READ Act, which aimed to have every child reading proficiently by the end of third grade. Members of the Joint Budget Committee are holding onto $33 million that would go to teach struggling early readers in hopes that a new law will get better results.”

This bill is dangerous. House Bill 581: Charter School Expansion
Most egregious is it turns charter authorization over to an independent appointed government agency to become the authorizer of charters. The long time director (and former mayor assistant) of an independent state charter association heads the commission. It would allow charters anywhere in the state – not only in urban and unaccredited districts. Funding drain on public schools. And NO accountability.
Summary of the bill –

This is the testimony from “Show Me Institute” – a right-wing conservative anti-tax, anti-public “think tank” (ha). It’s board is a billionaires boys club and Waltons et al are probably funders.
