This wonderful quote from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was sent to me this morning by the Southern Poverty Law Center:
As the nation honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we should all ask ourselves what we are doing to help achieve King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.”
Community is what Congress had in mind in 1994 when it designated MLK Day as a national day of service.
Dr. King knew that all of us have something to contribute. He understood the power of community action – of many small acts pushing a society closer to its ideals.
“Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve,” he said. “You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don’t have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. … You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love.”

The priorities are right.

As an aside, I forgot to mention this spectacular event, which occurred last night.
TOTAL Eclipse of the moon …. WOW. It was tracked from Norway to Hawai’i.

And for clarification, there is no DARK side of the moon as written in some newspapers. The correct terminology is FAR side of the moon. Moon gets sun, but we can’t see it.

A not-so-obvious song/film to celebrate the spirit and principles of Martin Luther King, Jr.:
If he were alive today, he’d be speaking for the people of Puerto Rico. I’m sure of it.

I’ve never felt so connected with Dr. King as I do on strike for public schools today — with so many of my 13 year old students joining me, and most of the community lending helping hands — it’s deeply soul satisfying. This is a great day, and I am joyful writing this on a great post.

Seems to me that making Martin Luther King day a day of service has allowed many, especially politicians to approve of Martin Luther King while avoiding his stands against poverty and militarism. Our schools are more and more segregated and poor, while we say we want to serve. Dr. Martin Luther King would not be smiling; he would be protesting against segregated schools, lack of healthcare, and lack of food, job, and housing security for so many Americans.
