The New York Timeswrote that the first-year memberof Congress, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who was tending bar in the Bronx a year ago, is pushing the Democratic Party to the left.
Alexandria (@AOC) is a remarkable figure in our politics today. By sheer force of personality, she has emerged as a dominant voice. She terrifies moderate Democrats and the entire Republican Party. She has proposed a Green New Deal. She has proposed that people who have an annual income of more than $10 million pay a tax of 70% of everything above $10 million (the marginal tax rate was 90% during the Eisenhower years).
She has two million followers on Twitter.
If anyone knows how to reach her, I would love to get her aid in fighting the privatization of public schools. She would be a powerful ally.
This is part of what the Times wrote about her today:
“Not so long ago, left-wing activists were dismissed as fringe or even kooky when they pressed for proposals to tax the super rich at 70 percent, to produce all of America’s power through renewable resources or to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
“Then along came Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — and her social-media megaphone.
“In the two months since her election, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez has had the uncanny ability for a first-term member of Congress to push the debate inside the Democratic Party sharply to the left, forcing party leaders and 2020 presidential candidates to grapple with issues that some might otherwise prefer to avoid.
“The potential Democratic field in 2020 is already being quizzed about her (Senator Kamala Harris praised her on “The View”), emulating her digital tactics (Senator Elizabeth Warren held an Instagram chat in her kitchen that looked much like one of Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s sessions) and embracing some of her causes.
“Ms. Warren and Senator Cory Booker, among others, have recently endorsed the idea of a “Green New Deal,” a call to reimagine an environment-first economy that would phase out fossil fuels. Ms. Ocasio-Cortez thrust that issue into the national dialogue after she joined a sit-in protest in the office of then-incoming House speaker, Representative Nancy Pelosi, in one of her first, rebellious acts in Washington.
“Her rise has stirred a backlash among some Congressional Democrats, who are seeking to constrain her anti-establishment streak and fear her more radical ideas could tar the party as socialist.
“Back home in New York, she has stoked opposition to a deal with Amazon to set up offices in Queens, putting pressure on Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio, both Democrats, to justify corporate incentives.
“Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, a Bronx-born 29-year-old of Puerto Rican descent, is the youngest congresswoman ever, and Washington veterans say they cannot recall a similar congressional debut.
“A bartender from the Bronx has been able to create a litmus test around climate and economic policy for every 2020 Democrat,” said Waleed Shahid, who was one of Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s early campaign advisers and is now the communications director for Justice Democrats, a liberal activist group.
“Far beyond policy, she has emerged as a potent symbol for a diversifying Democratic Party: a young woman of color who is giving as good as she gets in a political system that has rarely rewarded people who look like her. Her mastery of social media has allowed her to connect with audiences who might otherwise be alienated from Washington.”
Alexandra has an office in her New York City precinct. Why not call, identity who you are and who you represent (the fight to save public education), and ask if you can make a sit down appointment to talk with her?
twitter lists that aoc has only 739 follower not two million diane
I just checked. AOC has 2.3 million followers.
And I guess you also believe that Trump had the largest inauguration attendance of any elected President? Go troll elsewhere…
This was just posted on Quartz:
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez schools House Democrats on Twitter. The youngest member of Congress has 2.4 million followers on the social-media platform.
Good idea. I have a feeling she will be very responsive.

m4potw: I just wrote a letter to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez telling what is happening to public schools & asking for a public statement that she supports proper funding. Sent it to my teacher friends, requesting that they do the same.
Yes, please.
Reportedly, Ocasio-Cortez identified Hakeem Jeffries as a candidate to primary because he promotes privatization of America’s most important asset. I hope Cortez can enlist AFT in targeting Rep. Susan Davis of Calf. for primary opposition, as well. In a baffling move (or, maybe not, because Randi is thick as thieves with charter-loving CAP assuming leaked e-mails are correct) AFT is the 2nd largest campaign contributor to Davis, who thinks “every state and community should have a charter school”.
I asked Randi about Susan Davis and she said that the California AFT recommended her.
When union leadership works against American democracy and rewards power brokers who push for a system that results in lower pay and no security for the people the union represents, it is a HUGE PROBLEM for ALL Americans.
Davis won by 30 points against her Republican opponent. There is zero reason for a Democratic candidate from the right wing to be supported by both the hedge fund pseudo Dems. of DFER and, the AFT.
If Randi isn’t ousted, she should be forced to make a declarative statement about her goal to allow men like Reed Hastings to rule the U.S.A, taking away the rights of communities to self-control of their taxes and the schools their kids attend.
Lloyd offers a plan. Others may be able to facilitate, even Donna Shalala. At minimum she needs to learn about the TFA amateurs in education who have taken up staff positions in Congress, paid to be trained for that role and to join others who want to kill public education. It is clear that Puerto Rico is in dire straits, not only from the vultures who want to profit at every turn, including education, but now under threat from Trum’s threats to take away money scheduled to help Puerto Rico recover from the hurricane ….so he can build his ….WALL. When has there ever been a 3000 mile civil engineering project in the US with a “solution” before any deliberative analysis of the problems by experts? If you know about a published plan for border security, please let me know.
The privatizers are attacking Puerto Rico’s public schools. They are changing laws to justify their hostile takeover. https://therealnews.com/stories/the-privatization-of-puerto-ricos-public-schools-has-begun
The article should have identified the disaster capitalism of the Gates-funded Center for American Progress in Puerto Rico.
“Smithsonian Magazine” published a piece that explains why it would be almost impossible and incredibly expensive — more than most people know — to built Trump’s border wall.
“What Geology Has to Say About Building a 1,000-Mile Border Wall”
One would have to read the entire piece to understand the total ignorance and insanity of what Trump said he was going to build and make Mexico pay for it.
https://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/vast-geological-challenges-building-border-wall-180962072/
Lloyd, thank you for the enlightening article. It definitely needs to be read by more than us believers [that Trump is a ________!] on this site. The whole idea is a waste of money and is a monument to Trump’s racist, ignorant, bloated ego that needs massaging.
How long are people going to suffer because of this revolting, lying POS?
………………………………..
On Monday, Trump told reporters he would not give an inch on his demands for a wall.
“We’re talking about border security. Who could be against it? We’re talking about drugs pouring in, human traffickers tying up women, putting tape over their mouths and pouring into our country. We can’t have that,” Trump said. “We have drugs, we have criminals, we have gangs, and the Democrats don’t want to do anything about it.”
We have to make this a front-and-center issue for the upcoming elections.
Exactly, Lisa!
Ocasio-Cortez’s parents moved her up to Yorktown Heights to afford her greater educational opportunities. Why shouldn’t schools in the Bronx be funded in a way that will lower the class sizes and provide better options for all students? Why should charters siphon off the higher functioning students along with much needed funds and leave public schools crippled with stranded costs? I believe NPE would have a lot in common with Ocasio-Cortez’s aspirations. Public education is democracy in action.
Hi retired teacher:
Your expression is the best expression of your wisdom.
Your advice is simple but very meaningful. A short paragraph has 5 impacted sentences
I wholeheartedly agree with your question that
“Why should charters siphon off the higher functioning students along with much needed funds and leave public schools crippled with stranded costs?”
Your conclusion is marvelous, I hope that NPE will invite Ocasio-Cortez’s parents to be honor members so that the first-year member of Congress, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will be Dr. Ravitch’s ally in her Edu Blog.
Respectfully yours,
May King
AOC is being constantly, relentlessly attacked, mocked, ridiculed and smeared especially by the right wing media such as Fox News. They mock her clothing, where she grew up, any faux pas she may make, if she forgets to dot an i or cross a t, the howling against her is deafening. But she is amazing, she fights back and does not cave in. Some right wing troll dug up a video of her dancing when she was in college. Oh the horrors, she was dancing when she was in college, how dare she. That backfired, I think the video made her even more endearing and likable. In that 60 Minutes interview, Anderson Cooper looked horrified and petrified with fear at the suggestion of a 70% top marginal tax rate. Nothing radical about that; for decades the top marginal tax rate was 90% to 70% from FDR through Carter. There’s nothing radical about universal health care, all the other wealthy democracies have some form or version of universal health care.
Remember that the top marginal rate only applies to people making over $10 million a year, and doesn’t kick in until after the $10 million. Awful to get by on only $10 million a year.
As a public school assistant principal, I can absolutely relate to that.
The other day, I actually had to choose between my Learjet and my Lamborghini to get to work.
Why can’t ordinary people relate to $10-million-a-year-income earners like me? Do we not use the same kind of toothpick to clean our gums after dinner?
It’s not fair to ask me to pay more tax on my $10 million dollars a year because as it is, I already have to downsize and sell my beachfront home in the Hamptons just to keep onto my three penthouses overlooking Central Park in Manhattan.
Do you really think that’s fair?
I need a roof over my head just like anyone else.
Alexandria whatever-her-name-is is really off the wall . . . . She’s full of herself and on the selfish side, if you ask me.
I think the biggest challenge for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is to stay true to who she was before she won the primary and suddenly found herself bathed in endless spotlights from across the country and probably the world.
This kind of attention and the power it brings is a huge factor in becoming corrupted. She could easily lose her ability to think logically and rationally and find herself sucked inside the DC bubble … lost forever to us common-working class folk.
AOC will stay true to her progressive roots.
The billionaires and Wall Street did not finance her election. She is a national celebrity and she doesn’t need them.
I was being satirical. Once in a blue moon, I go for a tiny bit of laughter to prevent a whole lot of crying in this epoch of politics.
AOC will stay true to herself and her roots. Diane iw right. We will continue to work hard to get more of her in office and run ourselves!
Meantime, I’m boarding my 100 foot yacht to get away from all this stress.
Robert Rendo, Public Citizen: Glad you like your yacht. I wanted to fly to Tahiti on my private jet to get away from the snow storm that is coming but my pilot is not feeling well. My cook is taking off for a well deserved holiday. Guess I’ll have to do a Trump and call in McDonalds and pizza.
CarolMalaysia,
THANK YOU! Your note made my week, and I’m laughing myself into oblivion. What you said was funny!!!!
AOC should bask in the fear of the GOP. Shows she is powerful!
I was disappointed in Cooper. He was looking at her like she was some type of alien specimen. Maybe he’s worried about losing some of that Vanderbilt money if Ocasio-Cortez’s plan catches fire.
Cooper is a Vanderbilt. Need to know anything else about his reaction?
Cooper’s interview with Ocasio was an embarrassment to 60 Minutes’ legacy. CBS is now run by a former Fox executive so there should be no expectation of anything but, Murdoch spin.
Cooper follows the moneyed wind
She IS an alien, at least to Democratic party leaders.
As far as they are concerned, they need to get rid of the alien before it takes over the party.
Exactly, Joe. Well said.
Call be her up.
Something tells me that unlike 99% of Congress, she would actually listen
Her chief of staff is Saikat Chakrabarti; on Twitter at @saikatc.
I’ve tweeted to both of them.
Her webpage does not yet list a NY office: https://ocasio-cortez.house.gov/contact/offices
Here’s a hopefu indicator:
Thanks, maybe America can have a political hero, again.
But according to Joe Lover-man (aka Lieberman, aka Blabberman, aka Blubberman) she’s not the future of the party.
He is–which means the party has no future.
Ha ha ha.
Lieberman- seriously?
Lieberman is an Independent.
Senator Todd Young [R-IN] said on a recent radio broadcast that Ocasio-Cortez is a far L radical who doesn’t appeal to people. Todd Young has heard LOTS from me. I doubt that he reads what I send but I’m sure his staff is getting an ear full.
A good sign!
Some of the newly elected Democrats—including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (above) have talked about a “Green New Deal,” and that sounds like a great idea. The original New Deal was the program of Democratic President Franklin D. Roosevelt, in the 1930’s, to put unemployed people to work—we had 25% unemployment when he came to office—doing things the nation needed. They created a Civilian Conservation Corps, which built roads and parks and hydroelectric dams to supply electricity to large areas of Appalachia which never had it before. Folks went from dangerous kerosene lamps to safer, more efficient electric light. And with one of those CCC jobs, or a job like my dad had with the Works Progress Administration—building roads and drainage systems in places like Portsmouth, where I was born—folks could buy refrigerators and radios and washing machines. Everybody benefited, even the wealthy who had to pay more taxes, because the increased purchasing power of millions of workers started a business boom from which they also benefited. In four years the New Deal cut unemployment to 13%. It was said that the New Deal saved capitalism.
Of course, the New Deal was a lot more than just building roads and parks. Laws were passed that created a minimum wage, unemployment compensation, the right of workers to unionize and strike—and a Federal Communications Commission, which kept electronic media open to all. And it provided a small pension for widows and older workers, called Social Security. These programs also gave ordinary people more money to spend, which led to a boom in the auto industry and elsewhere. Working people now got vacations and went to visit their relatives, or Mound City or Serpent Mound, spending money as they traveled.
Republicans of that time voted “no” on most of the bills that created the New Deal, saying it was “socialism”—or people would get lazy if they had things too good. They accused the hard-working laborers along the highways of “leaning on their shovels” too much, etc. Franklin Roosevelt, who was born wealthy—like Kennedy, the Bushes, and Trump—was called “a traitor to his class.” But FDR reasoned that his friends could do without an extra yacht or another country estate easier than folks could do without food, clothing, or heat in the winter. Taxes did go up, but so did overall prosperity.
Today’s New Deal would need to be “green,” though, because we now know that we can’t just build lots of good stuff and ignore the effects on our warming, possibly overpopulated world. We could, for instance, build solar panels for most buildings, truck and car tops, and windmills where appropriate. We can’t just close coal mines and oil rigs without jobs for the workers. We could, with help from a Federal government more interested in helping people than waging war in the Middle East, build state of the art green-research and development centers in Appalachia. We could build solar powered schools and colleges, with tuition free or reasonable, as it was during the New Deal and after. Anyway, it’s a new year, and a Green New deal sounds pretty good.

China’s National Energy Administration in January established a mandatory target to reduce coal energy consumption. It also set a goal for clean energy to meet 20% of China’s energy needs by 2030. Meanwhile America keeps electing flat earth conservatives with regressive, head in the sand policies. #45’s devotion to coal and big oil are grounded in the last century’s economy, not the needs of tomorrow. We desperately need a “Green New Deal.”https://money.cnn.com/2017/07/18/technology/china-us-clean-energy-solar-farm/index.html
This is what Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stands for on her site. It is fantastic stuff! She doesn’t say anything about public schools.

Seems Kamala Harris is on board:
I strongly disagree with your assertion that her victory came about because of the force of her personality. The problem with politics is we are too focused on personality, rather than a platform. Her victory is the result of frustration, a platform, and an organization called the Justice Democrats. She didn’t take corporate money to get elected so she can speak the truth and work for the platform. Free college is one one of the platform planks, so she is obviously a supporter of public education. I would suggest you contact the Justice Democrats for a statement regarding their views on public education.
Public Education is a state.municipal responsibility. Less than 10% of the spending (K-12) is federal, and the proportion is declining. The federal Dept of Education should be abolished, and the current federal roles should be devolved back to the states/municipalities.
Previous presidential campaigns have found no real “traction” in discussing K-12 education. Candidates have found, that this issue does not garner many votes. It is an issue that most presidential candidates just “wash their hands of”, and ignore.
Most presidential candidates send their own children to exclusive private schools, and could not give a (expletive deleted), about public schools.
The dog just “does not hunt”, at the presidential level.
I predict a solid “rerun” for the 2020 campaign.
Trump is feeling the pain of people who aren’t receiving paychecks.

— Addressing the farmers in the Big Easy, Trump said he asks the drivers of his limousine to slow down so that he can keep track of what average people are paying for gas. “I’m riding in this incredible car, and I’m driving and I’m looking at gas stations to see how much is the gas,” Trump said. “I’m in The Beast, the world’s most expensive car. It’s like being in an Army tank that goes 50 miles per hour, right? I’m in The Beast, and I’m looking at gas stations. And I say, ‘Fellas, slow up! I can’t see.’ I say, ‘$1.75!’ That didn’t happen by accident, folks!” More than two years after the election, the president finished with a dig at his 2016 opponent. “You think Hillary Clinton would have done that? I don’t think so,” he said.
In fact, Trump saying he monitors gas prices from the comfort of his motorcade feels like exactly the kind of gaffe pundits would have skewered Hillary Clinton for had she said it. Recall how much people, including Democrats, made fun of her when she noted during a paid speech to auto dealers in 2014 that she had not driven a car since 1996. In this case, Trump’s comments about gas prices didn’t even make it into most accounts of the hour-long speech…
When asked about Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) calling him a ‘racist,’ Trump dismissed the question, saying, ‘Who cares?’”…

It’s the Onion!!! Sounds good, however. I wrote a letter to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez telling about the problems in public education and asking her to put out a statement saying she supported increased funding for public schools. I received a reply back from one of her volunteers saying that my letter would go to the appropriate people.

Check out the comments that viewers have made. She is being called a whole lot of vicious names such as “commie scum” or “Grand Witch of the Fem Klux Klan”. Conservatives are afraid of her because she speaks out against the injustices that exist in our country. [I don’t understand how these people think. Are they really that far down in the gutter?]

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez speaks at 2019 Women’s March in New York City

Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) spoke at the Women’s March in New York City on January 19.
“I don’t understand how these people think. Are they really that far down in the gutter?”
No, they aren’t in the gutter. They are swimming in the sewers with whatever is flushed from toilets.
These people think like Hitler and the Nazis did who are responsible for the Holocaust. People that think like this have existed as long as our species has been around.
Trump is a perfect example of what happens when you are a malignant narcissist and psychopath raised by a racist father.
This is a video that almost brought tears to my eyes…maybe just a little damper than normal. Martin Luther King showed us how one person can make a difference. Each of us has power to change the injustices…one at a time working together.
Video: The Power of One
The Power of One is a wonderful reminder that one person can make a difference. Maybe what you do won’t change the world but it could change one person’s world. Much like a drop of water that ripples outward a simple act of kindness from one person to another can make the world a better place for everyone.
You are about to view The Power Of One video presentation. Millions have already viewed and been moved by the essence of its message. We sincerely hope that you too will be inspired to spread the message of the power of one throughout your local community to truly make a difference. The Power of One begins with the Power of You!
