Stuart Egan describes a parting shot that Tea Party Republicans took, passing legislation to advance charter schools at the expense of public schools.
(A note to the few readers of this blog who continue to believe that charter schools are “progressive,” may I introduce you to the Republican members of the North Carolina legislature? Please be sure to talk to State Senator Phil Berger, who would stamp out public education if he could.)
There are a plethora of ill-fated consequences that can manifest themselves quickly because of this bill. The first three would be felt all over the state. The fourth would only be seen in Charlotte-Mecklenberg Schools as it was originally a local bill.
It could raise everyone’s property taxes in the state. Whatever the state now mandates for public schools and does not choose to specifically fund can now be passed on to local school systems.
It potentially weakens every public school system in the state whether or not it currently has a charter school. Now charter schools can ask the local district for funds to finance anything from custodians to benefits for charter school teachers.
It will probably cause a rise in charter school applications and eventually lead to more charter schools in the state. And the more charter schools there are, the more it hurts traditional public schools which still service the overwhelming majority of students in the state.
But most importantly, it would be allowing for the systemic re-segregation of student populations in the Charlotte-Mecklenberg School System under the auspicious call for “school choice.”
But now that fourth consequence can now be felt in every county in the state.

We are seeing this flurry of the GOP passing bills in states they still control to strip power from the people happening across the country in bold and repugnant attempts to subvert state Constitutions and the US Constitution.
I think this is another sign of the approaching danger of a 2nd Civil War, but this time it will be a fight to stop thugs and thieves from enslaving the rest of the people to their draconian, repugnant, deplorable thinking.

I would call it a 2nd Revolution…our Independence is at stake…

True, our “independence” is at stake. Regardless of the word to describe what is probably going to happen: “Revolution” or “Civil War”, the struggle will result in death and destruction that might totally destroy any resemblance of the United States that existed before 9/11/2001.
Forget about the battle to save an environment our species and most others on the planet need to survive. No matter who wins this struggle, the environment will be a bigger loser even if the Never, NEVER GOPer Trumpers win.
And if the GOPer Trumpers win, the survivors of the struggle might be the last generation of our species before the slide into extension takes off and destroys most life on the planet in a century or two.
In the short term the GOP and Trumpists win. In the long term, life on the planet as we know it loses, totally loses.

There should be a law in all 50 States forbidding this type of behavior. Pathetic

The GOP undermines the will of the people at every turn. Yet, their voters are so tribal and dedicated.

Why the h_ll is the Center for American Progress (the source for NYT’s “liberal” David Leonhardt’s education policy opinions) taking money from Bill Gates and promoting privatization, i.e. Republican “competition and choice”?
Bill Gates walks and talks like a Republican, ALEC duck. *
School privatization is a top priority of the Koch’s right wing ALEC.
CAP’s director for its self-appointed, disaster capitalism mission in Puerto Rico, formerly worked for an education company. The NLRB cited that same company for anti-union intimidation.
*Gates’ and his Microsoft co-founder, Paul Allen, spent $500,000 to defeat Washington state judges who rendered verdicts in favor of public schools. Allen helped elect Republicans in recent years.

A few years ago, Gates gave almost $400,000 to ALEC. when he realized that hurt his image, he never gave again.

Bill Gates belonged to ALEC at one time, but he left.
Why did he leave? I think he left because the Koch brothers and Gates both wanted to be the #1 honcho of ALEC and the only decision maker in the global movement to create a lord>serf dystopian theo-kleptocracy.
Gates couldn’t stand being led by the Koch twins. He wanted to be the Emperor of Earth.
