We saw at her confirmation hearing two years ago how ill-prepared Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is when questioned persistently about her views and actions. We saw a repeat performance when she was questioned by Lesley Stahl on “60 Minutes.” This is a person who is unaccustomed to being held accountable.
Now, at least five committees in the new Democratic-controlled House of Representatives intend to question her about her many controversial efforts to protect for-profit colleges, not students; to roll back protections for transgender students; to put the burden of proof on rape victims, not their alleged assailants; and many more of her policies intended to weaken civil rights protections and the duty of government to defend the weak and vulnerable, not the ruthless and powerful.
For two years, Democrats watched with fury as Education Secretary Betsy DeVos sought to dismantle nearly every significant Obama administration education policy.
Now, they’re gearing up to fight back. Lots of them.
As many as five Democratic-led House committees next year could take on DeVos over a range of issues such as her rollback of regulations aimed at predatory for-profit colleges, the stalled processing of student loan forgiveness and a rewrite of campus sexual assault policies.
“Betsy DeVos has brought a special mix of incompetence and malevolence to Washington — and that’s rocket fuel for every committee in a new Congress that will finally provide oversight,” said Seth Frotman, who resigned as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s top student loan official earlier in protest of Trump administration policies likely to be examined by Democrats.
Even in a Republican-controlled Congress, DeVos had a strained relationship at times with some committees. Her main priorities, such as expanding school choice, were largely ignored as lawmakers hashed out government funding bills. Now she will have to answer to House Democrats wielding gavels, several of whom have long worked on education issues and have been among her most vocal critics.
She came to her job expecting Congress to allow her to shift $20 Billion from Title I to Vouchers. That never happened. Her only funding victory was an increase in funding for charter schools, which now get $450 million, which they certainly don’t need, since they are the plaything of the billionaires.
Many committees are waiting to interview her, including the House Education Committee, chaired by Rep. Bobby Scott of Virginia; the Appropriations subcommittee, chaired by Rep. Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut; and the Financial Services Committee, chaired by Rep.Maxine Waters of California.
She needs to be removed as Sec. of Education!
Maybe she’ll resign?
Charter schools- the “playthings of the billionaires”. Their game- hatchets aimed at the vulnerable. As the Detroit News reported, charter schools have been especially brutal to Black families in DeVos’ home state. Eighty-seven percent of those thrown into chaos from charter school churn were Black students.
It’s about time that some oversight be done on her and the Department. I think all the Departments need to be looked at. They are dismantling the USA one piece at a time and giving it to the wealthy to make more money. Where is our heritage? Where is our concern for other people? Treaties are being broken and Native Americans are being driven off their land so developers can go after the riches in the ground. I hope all this comes out with more oversight.
Dear Diane Ravitche, I read your ‘news sheet’ every day or twice. I thank Heaven every week that you are ‘dedicated’ to saving Public Education and committed to that purpose as … your life’s work (yes, there are a few ‘asides’ in the text … which remind us that you are human. Now, as 2018 slides into History, I am persuaded, assured, convinced that Public Education will be re-enstalled in every State as each State’s constitutional obligation: all children must have access to Public Education … through grade 12. When the renewal of that obligation is assured, I believe a national ‘Statue’ is called for; is appropriate and will be supported by everyone who has children. You have gained so much momentum that ‘fulfillment’ is no long ‘wishful thinking’ …. Still it needs to be promoted by quoting Jefferson: ‘Public Education is the backbone of Democracy’ (we know it, we must prove it) I hope your ‘Christmas’ (regardless of religious persuasion) is as fulfilling as your Thanksgiving was full of promise. Someone should ask DeVos about the cost of her security detail. There aren’t that many grizzlies out there.
There are about 1500 grizzlies living in the US outside Alaska.
If her security costs about 7.5 million a year, that’s about $5,000 per grizzly per year.
Well, I guess that’s okay. And doesn’t the Bill of Rights say she has the right to grizzly arms or something? Sorry, bear bones humor, I know.
The right to bear arms?
Ha ha ha
Yes, though it does not specify which kind: Grizzly, Brown, Black, Polar Panda, Koala or Teddy
I guess that means she has a choice and we know how much she loves choice.
I think the grizzlies should be her security. She wouldn’t have to pay them since they are not human, and I hope she wouldn’t feed them, and then …
Poet! Stop talking about koalas and teddy bears. Betsy already thinks of public education as a zoo. She’s going to get more frightened and order Seal Team Six to protect her at a billion dollars a year. That’s millions of dollars for the seals, and hundreds of millions of dollars for the apparatuses attaching the weapons to their flippers.
Lloyd,
I wonder if she feeds her current security team. No seriously, I wonder… Do they eat canned rations while she dines on toast de crevettes à la Rothschild?
Not canned rations. They are eating MREs or fast food, donuts and coffee that they buy. All they have to do is send one man on the team to go buy food at KFC, Pizza Hut, etc.
Some of you may scoff, but that is exactly what the second amendment says if you read it literally. …the right to bear arms shall not be infringed. This sacred amendment gives us the right to grow body hair and claws. No one is going to take away that right while I am grubbing away for tasty roots and hugging bushes for berries.
Roy, you’re misinterpreting the Constitution. It doesn’t say we have the right to furry forearms (although one could argue that the Declaration of Independence states we have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of furriness), but It says that we have the right to form regulated militias against bears. It’s very clear. Bear arms, arms against bears. Hence, $7.5 million dollars a year to form a militia to protect Betsy DeVos.
The Right to 🐻 Arms
The Constitution gives the right
To bear the arms of bear
It gives the humans chance to fight
A grizzly on a tear
LCT
LCT
I believe what they were actually referring to was the right of humans to have all the armaments that bears of the time possessed, including fighter jets and nookyalur devices.
It simply isnt fair
To tangle with a bear 🐻
When bear has got a nuke
And human, just a duke
The Right to 🐻 Betsy
We all must 🐻 the cost
Of keeping Betsy safe
And guiding, when she s lost
Inside the Mammoth Cave
🐻 ing the Cost
To bear the cost of 🐻 s
We simply must endure
And Betsy’s school affairs
We simply must secure
That’s what the Constitution is really about, protecting aristocrats from we the people. Nailed it!
That is, we the people must protect aristocrats. (grammar, y’know)
🐻 istocratic rule
Of home and town and school
Is right of every Bill
Who lives upon the Hill
I think Betsy will repeat the same act and used the same tactics she did during the hearings before she became the Secretary of Education. She will ignore the questions and blabber on like she did before.
Can Betsy be impeached? I think the answer is yes but will the Democratic House of Representatives waist the impeachment process knowing the GOP dominated Senate will never convict?
https://ballotpedia.org/Impeachments_of_federal_officials
The question is: Can a US president (or any other federally elected or appointed official) be “re-impeached” by a new Congress on the same charges? Or would double jeopardy apply?
“Double jeopardy is a pretty fundamental element to the US criminal justice system, but does it apply to a US President (or other impeachable official) and the trial-like impeachment proceedings in Congress?
“For example, if a US president faces impeachment hearings for some offense, but fails to be impeached by the House, could he or she face a new impeachment hearing on the same charges if, say, a mid-term election changes the majority party?
“(Let’s assume, for the sake of this question, that no new substantial evidence regarding those charges is discovered, just a change in congressional makeup.)
“Along similar lines, what if he or she was impeached by the house, but failed to be removed/”convicted” by the Senate? Would a fresh impeachment by the House (on the same charges) be necessary? Or could a new Senate re-convene to hold new hearings on the prior impeachment, and simply re-cast their removal vote?”
https://politics.stackexchange.com/questions/16554/can-a-us-president-be-re-impeached-by-a-new-congress-on-the-same-charges-or-w
Will the new Democratically controlled House risk throwing away the impeachment option without a sure thing in the Senate or will they wait and see if they take over the Senate in 2020 and then act?
“incompetence and malevolence”: Currently the top two qualities sought to be considered for the executive branch.
A bit off topic, but it comes from the Richard DeVos Heart and Lung Transplant Clinic and is once again indicative of the kind of world the DeVos clan wants. American exceptionalism at its finest:

Thus, if we don’t feel you can afford the expensive anti-rejection drugs, we will look for a more solvent worthy recipient for a new heart. A heartless response from Dick DeVos!
To be fair, Dick wasn’t responsible for this. He died a few months ago. But this and other decisions like it fit his clan’s agenda like a tailor made glove (do the DeVos’s have any other kind?).
When consumers buy products like those sold by Major League Baseball, the
buyers should have a voice to stop the company from using that money to fund the Mississippi U.S. Senate campaign of a racist.
I hope a bunch of well informed people can get the attention of the leaders and participants in these committees, otherwise there is a good chance that her dismal policies will be sugar coated as “fair” or wonderful affirmations of consumer choice, and chartering and the rest. This is a real problem if TFA staffers are in place or put there as if experts in education. Keep them out of the process of framing questions for these hearings.
Democrats in Congress will use the opportunity as political theater to make it look like they really care about public education.
Meanwhile, they will continue undermining our schools, teachers and students just as they have done for two decades.
That’s right. Shakespearean players ain’t got nothing on Pelosi. (It’s over three decades now since Clinton’s charter school investment act.) Nearly forty years of theatre. Most of the same players are still on stage. I wish they would exeunt along with their dramatized Republican foils and let the true Left do battle with the dissembling Right.
Clinton’s charter legislation funneled money to charters. Under both parties, it’s now up to $450 million a year. It was passed in 1994.
2018 minus 1994 equals more than two decades, not three. Sorry, I always joke that as an English teacher, math and I do not always see eye to eye.
When it comes to imaginary numbers, we all can see lower case I to lower case I.
Ha! That’s a math joke. You must be a math teacher. Where do you go on vacation, Times Square?
Or Polynesia?
Math and I
See eye to i
As you can well imagine
Math and you
Are comfy too
Cuz i ain’t just a fashion
English and history teachers take the best vacations. We always have stories. Math teachers always have problems.
Max Planck, who started a revolution in physics with his idea of the quantum of energy once said that A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it
The same is true of political ideas.
We REALLY need term limits in Congress because people like Pelosi stay waaaaaay past their use by date.
I hope they don’t stop at investigating Betsy. I hope they have a good look at Dick DeVos and his scAmway pyramid scheme as well. Not only is Amway a fraud but the marks are pressured into donating to far right candidates as well. Before they realize they’ve been swindled, of course.
There is somethi very comforting about DeVos and her testimony. Her inability to form cogent thoughts in public will out her as an incompetent. Why would we try to get rid of her? She is a poster child for misunderstanding or worse. Let her stay. She will give us fodder for our missiles of criticism.
With 20 million for security, maybe they can build her a soundproof bubble, lalalalala. Failing that, this should be about as productive as hearings with a pull the string talking Barbie.
I wish they would focus on student loans – DeVos has had absolutely no oversight there- she’s been operating in the dark.
Dark Operations
She’s operating in the dark
Cuz Betsy cut the light
And don’t expect a single spark
Cuz Betsy likes the night
Reblogged this on David R. Taylor-Thoughts on Education and commented:
This should be some more epic watching. After all, everyone loves a trainwreck.
BETSY DEVOS RESIGNS UNDER PRESSURE FROM DETROIT SCHOOL BOARDS
This would make a great headline and make my day. I am patiently waiting for the headline to appear in one of our fine media institutions some where in this country……check your news people its about to happen and devos will be a distant memory, she can move back to midwestern michigan and brainwash all the cheese heads there
I doubt DeVos will serve out four years. She hates being questioned by Democrats.
I doubt you can show me a democrat presidential candidate who will not be happy to make an issue out of Devos being a terrible secretary of education. Show me one who will include Arne Duncan and Bill Gates as having left Obama with an embarrassing record in public education, and we might have something worth talking about.
Democrats should not leave us with somebody in education able to be more effective…..in doing what Gates and Duncan stood for.
So sadly hard to imagine that happening…
I can imagine it happening, but I have a wild imagination.
In case you may not have noticed.
🙂 it’s been a bit evident….
I’m so glad I campaigned hard to elect Democrats in the midterms. If they could take down Betsy, every door knock would have been doubly valuable.
Are we having grilled Betsy for dinner tonight? Get out the condiments!
What goes well with Betsy?
Betsy Boiled in Vodka and caviar.
