Democrats swept both houses of the state legislature in New Hampshire, at the same time that far-right Governor Chris Sununu was re-elected.
Sununu endorsed vouchers and home-schooling, saying that he would give students $3,500 to attend the school of their choice. He also supported concealed carry of weapons, which the Republican legislature approved.
With a Democratic Legislature in Place, Sununu’s extremist views will be checked and balanced.
I hope the new legislators are clever enough to undue the worst of education legislation put in by Republicans and stop cold the wish list of Sununu.
We can only “hope” that this extremist governor will be checked and balanced by the Democratic Legislature.
Sort of a paradox (and actually what feels to be a symbol for an every year more confusing national understanding of educational problems) that voters who wish for a more public-school protective approach show this by electing “progressives” to the house and senate — but then ALSO keep a notably non-progressive pro-privatizing man in the gubernatorial office.
Here’s a question for someone in New Hampshire, or someone who understand voters in New Hampshire. Why would people all over the state vote for Democratic state legislators and for a very conservative Republic governor who disagrees with the ideas of many Democrats?
Politico web site has some interesting vote totals to look at. It looks to me like it was a vote for the familiar, but I am speaking from ignorance of the situation.
(I am a former resident of NH). I have always a great deal of respect for the hard-headed no-nonsense people of the Granite State. I wish them well.
