She went to two private religious schools run by Orthodox Jewish sectarians. She spoke to an event hosted by a Catholic organization.
She talked about her views, which are antithetical to public education.
Weird, isn’t it, that she is the Secretary of Education and is hostile to the schools that enroll 90% of America’s students?
The Betsy DeVos we saw on Leslie Stahl’s interview at 60 Minutes is the real Betsy DeVos.
She doesn’t have a single idea about how to help schools do a better job. Her only idea is choice.
She will, if Congress lets her, slash the budgets of the schools that enroll 90% of the students so as to send more children to religious schools.
She has no sense whatever of public responsibility or the common good. These are foreign concepts to her.
Worst of all, she lacks any education vision whatever for the nation’s children and its schools.
Re: Jan Resseger can’t quite believe that Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos visited New York City and failed to tour even one public school.
She heard they have cooties 🐞
LESLIE STAHL: “Maybe you should (visit some public schools).”
BETSY DEVOS: “Maybe I should.” (seemingly agreeing)
It looks Betsy chose to refuse Leslie’s advice after all.
DeVos is a smug, shrewd ideologue. Nothing will change her false impression of public education. She is in the office of the DOE to undermine and drain money away from pubic education. Her lack of interest in public schools is merely a reflection of her devious, perverse agenda.
This catastrophic looting of the public sector has been a long time coming. It’s part of the alliance between Wall Street and religious extremists which greatly empowers the billionaire class as well as sectarian extremists of all religions. The Clintons and Obama enabled this holy alliance to prosper with their anti-public policy bias. There is no way to “tweak” our way out of this b/c of how far the defunding and demolition of public education and public goods have gone in the last 40 years. The only candidates who should be supported in the coming electoral season are militant progressive reformers who do not want to appeal to doubtful Trumpians but run to the left of the status quo. The dominant insiders among the Dems are trying to win by wooing voters to their right, putting up for vote former military men and women who promise not to rock the boat, like Sens. Joe Minchin and Heidi Heitkamp, and Gov. Cuomo of NY. Public education cannot be rescued or renewed as long as this center-right money machine controls the Dems.
The best hope for the Dems, I believe, is a groundswell of progressive young people that will not settle for a “a better deal.” I hope so many of them show up, they overrun the DNC and the old corporate enablers.
I hope you’re right and an ocean of progressive young and old folks overwhelm the Wall Street kings and queens controlling the Democrats. History is not kind to this hope. Democratic Party is where earnest and idealist progressive go to die. Mass movements in labor, women’s rights, gay rights, immigrant rights, and civil rights, outside the electoral system and the Democratic Party, are what compelled the insiders to do some policies left of center, like the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the SCOTUS confirmation of marriage equality(which Hillary /clinton never supported). If the outsider mass movements now underway manage to grow and consolidate, the insiders of both parties will have to make concessions like they did before.
Worth repeating: “The only candidates who should be supported in the coming electoral season are militant progressive reformers who do not want to appeal to doubtful Trumpians…”
Amen, thank you! I’ve contributed to Cynthia Nixon’s challenge to Wall Street Mario Cuomo while NY Dem Party and all the crony unions lined up to kneel at Mario’s feet.
