This is a scandal.
When Betsy DeVos was appointed as Secretary of Education, she held investments in the for-profit higher education sector, which is known for fraud, high attrition, and low graduation rates. Presumably, she divested, but it is not clear whether she did.
Now she has turned over the job of revising regulations of the for-profit colleges to former high-level executives from the same sector.
Does anyone doubt that their mission is to remove all constraints on these quasi-criminal enterprises that have defrauded millions of students and gotten away scot-free?
Education Department adviser Robert Eitel, hired by the Trump administration last February after four years in the for-profit college industry, played a role in suspending an Obama-era policy known as “borrower defense to repayment.” The rule made it easier for students, enticed into taking out five-figure loans on promises that they would get good jobs, to file for debt relief. It also allowed the government to recoup the losses from the schools.
Ultimately, those potentially most impacted include many predominantly low-income, and minority students disproportionately represented at for-profit colleges and often saddled with high student loans and facing poor job prospects.
Education policy changes involving for-profit colleges has been a touchy subject since Secretary Betsy DeVos, who entered office with investments tied to the for-profit college sector, took over the department following Trump’s election.
The revelations about Eitel’s engagement in borrower defense policy come on the heels of a New York Times report that the department has been dismantling a team investigating widespread abuses by for-profit colleges. Education spokeswoman Liz Hill told the Times the group shrunk because of attrition and said no new hires with ties to the for-profit college industry had influenced the group’s work.
Eitel, who had also worked as an Education Department attorney under President George W. Bush, isn’t the only for-profit college executive DeVos has brought into the Department. The secretary also drew ire when she tapped Julian Schmoke, Jr., a former dean at the for-profit college DeVry, to lead the department’s Student Aid Enforcement Unit last August.
There’s no indication Schmoke was involved in the delay of the borrower defense rule.
Eitel — a former vice president at two for-profit college operators, Bridgepoint Education and Career Education Corp. — joined the Trump administration in February as part of a so-called “beachhead team” formed to usher the agency through the transition.
For two months, he worked at the Education Department while on unpaid leave from Bridgepoint, according to financial disclosure forms. He formally gave up his position at Bridgepoint in April, when he was hired on a permanent basis as a senior adviser to DeVos.
Although Education Departments ethics officials maintain working on borrower defense wouldn’t have violated his ethics agreement, Eitel has up until now refused to say publicly whether he had a hand in the borrower defense delay.
Eitel’s Involvement in Borrower Defense
On June 14, DeVos announced she was suspending the borrower defense rule, arguing that under the rule, “all one had to do was raise his or her hands to be entitled to so-called free-money.”
Emails obtained by the executive branch watchdog group Democracy Forward and shared with ABC News show in the days leading up to the announcement, Eitel circulated borrower defense talking points to staffers, edited background documents, and even signed off on the official delay notice.
This is a classic case of the fox guarding the henhouse. Or worse.

Trump loves to get revenge on those who he thinks wronged him or got in his way or didn’t help him when he was often having financial difficulties.
You can hear it from Trump’s own mouth, but if this CNN video gets a wider audience, Trump will tell his ignorant followers it is all fake news or he didn’t mean it.

She never, ever should have gotten the job. DeVos is a political operative. That’s all she’s ever been. She had huge family wealth and she used it to buy Michigan politicians for 30 years. She was such an ideologue she alienated even ed reformers in that state.
They like to talk about results, so let’s look at some. Michigan public education has declined in quality every single year DeVos has been involved in it.
She has now harmed several generations of public school students, and ed reformers not only give her standing ovations, they promoted her to the top job.
I’m glad she’s the face of “the movement”. She’s a perfect representative.
Today she’s visiting yet another of her preferred private schools.
Someone has to explain to me how we ended up with a federal government that is opposed to the public schools 90% of the citizens attend. It’s ludicrous.
Maybe next time we could canvass the country and actually find a person who attended a public school? 90% of us did. They really must have to TRY to exclude us in DC.

“90% of us did.”
At the same time there are those of who didn’t attend public K-12 but managed to understand a sense of justice, equality, rationo-logical free thinking.
I’ve seen just as many self-identified elites come from the public sector. Neither sector is inherently bad in and of itself. . . until one attempts to completely overtake and deny others the opportunity to educate their own children the way they see fit.
The problem with the DeVos, Gates, Broads, Waltons, etc. . . is that they certainly do not seem to understand that concept and that their way of thinking (if you can call it that-LOL) and being is far superior to what the peeons want and/or need. It is an attitude bred in supposed superiority of being, and in the case of DeVos, Kochs, etc, those of the fundie xtian right of being chosen by their god as a “chosen one”. And that attitude my friends is a very, very dangerous one. . . one that the founding fathers sought to prevent from being the dominant dogmatic one.

Not at all. Just because powerful people are able to get away with, both legally and illegally, fraud, stealing, manipulating, lying, etc. . . doesn’t mean it isn’t a “scandal”. Actually it’s a lot worse. It’s an abomination and it is a massive disgusting critique of our society that one would think that.

This is somewhat off-thread, but I eagerly await your post about John Kelly’s cruel & inane comments (& his is supposed to be the “voice of reason” at the WH-?!) about the separation of immigrant children from their families “…can go into foster care or whatever,” an “assurance” (not quoting him–my sarcasm) that these children will be taken care of.
Seth Meyers (& good for him) broadcast this (so the many tv watchers who don’t really follow politics are now aware), & opined, I believe, something about using these kids for child labor. (Oh, is THIS the reason for relaxing U.S. child labor laws?)
How low can they go? (Rhetorical ?, that.) Much, much worse than sickening news.

Under the Trump administration, ICE has now deported 5,100 parents of children who have sometimes been left at school on in situations where they were alone with no way to receiving help.
Around 15,000 more face a similar threat in the next five years, according to the Applied Research Center — a 30-year-old racial justice think tank. These kids live in constant fear that their parents will be taken away. These parents do not pose a risk or danger to society.
The New York Times reported that more than 700 children have been taken from parents arriving at our borders since October, including more than 100 children under the age of 4. The poem on the base of the Statue of Liberty says, “Give me your tired, your poor, Your Huddled masses yearning to breathe free”. Why is such abuse tolerated?
Separating children from their parents does not represent the values we hold as a society. The government practice of detaining mother and children apart from each other would cost taxpayers an average of $327 million per year.
Separating parents and children is not acceptable.

Diane: The Washington Post reports that the Trump Administration is laying the necessary groundwork to warehouse the children of migrants who enter the United States illegally on military bases in Texas and Arkansas. The bases will be used to contain anyone under the age of 18 who crosses the border illegally with their parents or on their own.
In a leaked email sent to Pentagon personnel, it was disclosed that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) would be making visits to four military installations in the coming weeks to evaluate whether they contain infrastructure suitable for sheltering children.

So, taking parents away from their children who are living in the US is justification for taking children away from parents when they try to cross our southern border. This sounds like Trump’s free-floating association BS. [Trump’s hatred and bigotry is unbearable.] I can’t imagine what those poor children are going through. Many come from lands that are violent or have no means to survive. This is how they are treated.
…..
CNN: Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen on Tuesday defended an agency policy that will result in more families being separated at the border, saying similar separations happen in the US “every day.”
Nielsen was testifying Tuesday at a Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing, where lawmakers on both sides of the aisle raised concerns about what happens to immigrant children who end up in the custody of the Department of Homeland Security, which — by law — transfers such minors to HHS within two days.
“Our policy is if you break the law, we will prosecute you,” Nielsen said. “You have an option to go to a port of entry and not illegally cross into our country.”

“We have people coming into the country, or trying to come in — and we’re stopping a lot of them — but we’re taking people out of the country,” Mr. Trump said. ” You wouldn’t believe how bad these people are. These aren’t people. These are animals. And we’re taking them out of the country at a level and at a rate that’s never happened before. And because of the weak laws, they come in fast, we get them, we release them, we get them again, we bring them out. It’s crazy.”…
“We have to break up families … the Democrats gave us that law,” he said. ..

Here’s your federal government, folks:
“The White House on Monday announced that it would nominate Mitchell (Mick) Zais as deputy secretary of education.
The announcement from the White House highlighted the growth of school choice in South Carolina while Zais oversaw the state’s schools. The number of public charter schools increased by 78 percent during his tenure, according to the announcement, and the number of students enrolled in online courses jumped by 130 percent. It also pointed to Newberry’s ranking as one of U.S. News and World Report’s top regional colleges in 2013.”
They really go out of their way to pretend public school students don’t exist.
What happened to public school students in South Carolina during his tenure?
No one in DC cares. It’s as if they and their families don’t exist.
This is daily. They consistently exclude public school children from consideration in any federal policy. They don’t have a single adult advocate in their own government.

What power do we have to reverse this, short of impeachment of Trump and Pence after the mid term elections and with a Democratic House.
Yet who will the Democrats put out there to counter him in the manner they should . My vote is for Maxine Waters, no holds barred . . The Democrats are afraid to move forward with impeachment because of some foolish belief that the Republicans were punished for impeaching Clinton . I guess we have come to the point that we believe the American people can not tell the difference between lying about oral sex and treason. Could someone please remind me who won the 2000 Presidential race .hanging Chads aside . Some one tell me who controlled the House in 99-2000 and 2001 to 2003 . And my last pet peeve; why does the media tell me what the President thinks, like” the President thinks he has nothing to worry about Russia” . Since when are pundits mind readers the President might think he could face a firing squad .
So it would seem we are stuck with the slime dwellers and the cesspool till 2021 and then will the Democrats do what ever is necessary including stacking the Supreme Court to reverse all the damage, unlikely .

I don’t know about others who read your column, but I’m starting to suffer from scandal fatigue… and the scandals seem to be increasingly blatant. This one seemed especially bad but was almost immediately topped by the POTUS’ insistence that ZTE jobs needed to be protected followed by the news that China was loaning Mr. Trump $500,000,000 for a resort in Indonesia. I fear Mr. Trump’s claim that he could shoot someone in Times Square and not lose any support is proving to be alarmingly accurate…

wgersen: One of the worst things Trump does is to attack the media. They are having budget cuts by owners who determine what can be printed and work to earn money for themselves. However, this debasing of journalism is having consequences domestically as well as all around the globe. It is also why those who will be hurt by Trump’s horrible policies don’t believe anything the press writes. Any criticism of Trump is labeled Fake news.
Columbia Journalism Review: “…Trump specifically criticized CNN International, tweeting, “CNN International is still a major source of (Fake) news, and they represent our Nation to the WORLD very poorly. The outside world does not see the truth from them!” Appearing on CNN’s Reliable Sources, Baltimore Sun media critic David Zurawik said that the undermining of a respected and vital international news source “is another way that Trump recklessly hurts us in the world.”…
“Writing in this week’s New Yorker, Steve Coll argues that “when the leader of a nation previously devoted to the promulgation of press freedom worldwide seeks so colorfully to delegitimize journalism, he inevitably gives cover to foreign despots who threaten reporters in order to protect their own power.”

I say ‘Welcome to the club.” I’m still hurting about the fact that Trump is purposely having immigrant children removed from their parents and that the government is now looking for new places to warehouse them because existing places for storage of immigrants are filled up.
I do agree with Diane, however, that we can’t give up.
I was watching an American Experience program yesterday on my DVR. In the late 1800’s it seems the wealthy were also in charge and workers were hurting. Those 1%’ers do like to keep all the $$$, have control of everything and don’t mind a bit if people are starving. [At least Trump hasn’t called out the national guard to put down teachers’ strikes.]
How many times in the past have the wealthy controlled history? Will we ever learn?
