This is a very sad story. A teenager in Brentwood, Long Island, the epicenter of the murderous gang MS 13, confessed to his teacher, putting his life at risk. He agreed to confess to the police and identify the gang members. He thought he would be safe, protected by cooperating with the police. But he wasn’t safe. His name was turned over the ICE, he was arrested and put into detention with the same gang members that he squealed on. Now he is slated for deportation. Surely, someone can stop this madness. Someone?
Do you know about the New Sanctuary Movement. It is out of Judson Church in Manhattan and we have pulled off some near miracles!

Someone?
Not until the Koch enslaved GOP loses its majority in one or both Houses of Congress. Hopefully both Houses by wide margines.
It would also help of Trump and Pence ended up being indicted by Muller and they resign.
I’m continuously saddened and angry at the unending hatred that Trump is spouting and spreading all over this country. There seems to not be a word of decency coming from this demented loon. How many people are suffering after having lived in this country for decades? I read that immigrants are making plans for their children in case they don’t come home from work. I just read an article about how 30 Cambodians are now going to be deported. They came here to get away from the killing fields and now, after contributing and adjusting to life here they have to go?
This country is become a beacon of indecency and darkness.
I saw a documentary about how Hitler blamed the Jews for the poor economy in Germany. Trump isn’t a bit better since it is all the immigrants who are causing damage in the US.
Eloquently put.
well said. this is awful
Well said!
Just like the “are you a citizen” question on the census, such punitive enforcement of laws will cause undocumented people to go underground. They will not report crimes or cooperate with law enforcement, and communities will not get the services they need as a result of the census.
Life on Earth is a living hell for too many people.
Maybe they can apply for citizenship like my family did and become legal…hence no deportation? Yes…it is a long and arduous process as itbshould be. Have you noticed how hard it is to become a citizen of another country? Even Mexico. However…MS 13 is a very dangerous group of thugs and extremely violent criminals. I’m sure none of us want these types of illegals …or legals…in our school or communities with our or any children…or possible victims? They are not very humane with their machetes, etc. as some poor parents and families have discovered on Long Island sadly. It is horrific. Are you a citizen question shows up on many forms. Not sure what the issue is? Unless you are here illegally? Then yes…an issue.
“According to Justice Department estimates, MS-13 is a small gang (in the United States), compared with the Bloods, Crips and Almighty Latin King Nation. The estimated 10,000 MS-13 gang members in the United States account for less than 1 percent of the estimated 1.4 million total gang members in the country. According to CNN, 104 of the 1,300 gang members arrested during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement sweep last May — 8 percent — were linked to MS-13.”

Openminded
Is not .
I am not an open borders advocate . Which we can have a discussion about . Although I would give a path to citizenship for those that are here . Most arrived because of US policy failings in Latin America.
We can discuss the affect on certain sectors of the labor force . Not the aggregate affect which is positive .
We can question sprawl and what “The Limits of Sustainable Growth” are. .
We can even discus fairness .
However:
The only place Long Island is sadly horrific is in the Fake News Rupert Murdoch Rag media . After recording 30- 50 year record lows depending on county in 2016 , BEFORE TRUMP . crime fell again in 2017 . Keep in mind we have 3 million people on long Island .
“Crime fell across Long Island in 2017, clocking historically low homicide totals even as police in Nassau and Suffolk attempted to deal with MS-13, the violent street gang officials blame for at least 14 slayings.
There were 22 homicides in Suffolk this year, down from 34 in 2016, and 15 homicides in Nassau, down from 23 — in both cases a decline of some 35 percent, the statistics show. Justin Meyers, assistant police commissioner in Suffolk, said the county’s homicide total is the lowest since 2002, when the department recorded 20 homicides.
Violent crime — which includes homicide, rape and robbery — is down this year 3.4 percent in Nassau as of Dec. 14 when there were 822 violent crimes reported versus the 851 during the same time period in 2016. The number of shooting victims in Nassau has dropped to 29 in 2017 from 52 in 2016, according to statistics.
In Suffolk, the violent-crime drop was 8.3 percent over last year through Dec. 16. The totals of all reported crimes have also dropped this year in both counties: down 7.1 percent over last year in Suffolk and 1 percent in Nassau. ”
And unless your relatives came here after 1922 or were from Asia . Tell your sob story someplace else. We had no restrictions on European immigration .
Lastly it takes about 18 years to migrate hear legally from Latin America. So lets stop pretending about what our ancestors would have done .
Trump is not responsible for the drop in the crime rate you mention. As unemployment drops, crime often drops along with it. The best way to lower crime is through education and jobs that pay livable wages.
And how dare you accuse me of having a sob story. All I did was refer to a historical piece about MS 13 that was linked to a lot of facts that pointed that MS-13 is still a small problem in the US compared to the central American countries where the US sent members of MS-13 when they were kicked out of the US after they became hardened criminals in US prisons.
The piece also pointed out that other street gangs in the US are a much larger problem than MS-13 is in the US. I know that should not diminish the danger of a gang like MS-13, but when an idiot like Trump focuses on one gang, that doesn’t diminish that gang. It makes their members feel more powerful because of the attention the are getting.
Just like the Liar-in-Chief and Emperor-of-Hate Donald Trump bathes in Media attention, street gangs also think of media attention as proof they are growing in power.
“More than 1.4 million Americans are wearing the colors of more than 33,000 gangs across the country, according to a report by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
“Based on evidence from federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement, the FBI says gangs commit 48% of violent crime, and are only becoming more dangerous. Some even source weapons from the military.”
MS-13 is on that list of the most violent street gangs. The FBI even has a special task force focusing on MS-13.

It must be the Trump affect, paranoia is setting in . I was not addressing you . I was addressing Openminded Before Trump was in capitals as before B.C. to emphasize that Trump was and is not responsible for the drop. Further most of us here on Long Island feel very safe unlike his claim of horror. . The crime rate is low and dropping and MS 13 is only a problem in the immigrant communities where immigrants are the ones who suffer . MS13 is smart enough to stay where Police had tolerated them and the community was afraid to come forward . The headlines have forced the police to become proactive . MS13 will be extinguish quicker than Rudy took care of the NY mob as a prosecutor.
The sob story comment was not addressed to you but to Openminded, who gave the typical ” become citizens Like my relatives did ”
So get out of the California sun and go sit in the shade somewhere .
Further I would love to use economics and education to explain the crime rate except that historical patterns don’t let me . The late 90s were the Wild West In NYC and suburbs a relatively good economic period . The disaster of the of the financial collapse saw increasing unemployment and decreasing crime a thirty year trend in NY.
But I got to go get some NY sun . You stay out of the sun, too strong out West.
You are right. I went back and looked closer and saw that you were not writing your comment to me but to an anonymous person called “Openminded”.
Sorry about my confusion.
If someone picks an anonymous name [so they can hide their real identity for whatever reason] like “Openminded”, that usually means they are not openminded.
Yes, we get a lot more sunshine — when it isn’t raining — but I don’t do well in the sunshine when it is also hot so I time my outdoor work schedule when there is shade where I’m working so no worry about me getting too much sun.
In fact, I just finished installing a patio cover across the back of the house to get the sun and weather off that wall and provide more shade — a place to escape the sunshine when I want to go out.
I have discovered the hard way that I have more energy when I work outside in the cold than in the heat. The sun seems to leach energy out of me if I work when the sun is brightest and hottest.
So, I avoid working outside in the sunshine and the hotter it gets outside, the less time I spend out there.
Cross out one ‘of the ‘. I love my key board and bouncing cursor. HELP . I know go buy a new Lap Top
What about talk to write software? I wonder what it would print if you were dictating to it and then sneezed.

Joel Herman,
If your laptop is still a good one, have you considered buying a keyboard you can plug into the laptop and use that larger keyboard instead of the smaller one on the laptop?
Very sad that this is the position that being an honest person puts you in nowadays…it is incidents such as these that cause students to be reclusive, when it comes to interaction with their instructors, or any adult for that matter, when it comes to issues within their lives. Although, I do understand why this teacher felt the need to report it, given the danger that could be involved. Does anyone have a better solution as to how this scenario should have been handled?
Witness protection. Not deportation. That would be a nice start. We are going to,play the devil trying to get help, again.
If a student turns in the criminals, at risk of his life, he should get protection, not deportation. Horrible to think he is incarcerated with the gang members whom he singled out.
YES!!
Just to complete the historical Circle of Evil which this is a manifestation of: MS-13 is the direct product of US intervention in Central America during the insurrections and civil wars of the 1980’s. The gang started in LA among Salvadoran youth displaced by the death squads – acting with such impunity that they assassinated the Archbishop while he was conducting mass – of the US-supported government during the ’80’s civil war.
The US is responsible for a lot of destabilization in the world. So much for ‘spreading democracy’. Why are we militarily involved in 76 countries? This number may have increased since I last looked. Our corporations provide most of the military equipment for the world…$$$$$$.

The US and the Rise of ISIS
byStephen Zunes
The rise of ISIS (also known as Daesh, ISIL, or the “Islamic State”) is a direct consequence of the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq. While there are a number of other contributing factors as well, that fateful decision is paramount.
Had Congress not authorized President George W. Bush the authority to illegally invade a country on the far side of the world that was no threat to us, and to fund the occupation and bloody counter-insurgency war that followed, the reign of terror ISIS has imposed upon large swathes of Syria and Iraq and the recent terrorist attacks in Paris, Beirut, the Sinai, and elsewhere would never have happened…

Yes, and now we’re apparently set on bringing down what was the last secular, pluralistic country in the Middle East, however awful its governing regime may be.
We’re not called The Empire of Chaos for nothin’.
