The National Rifle Association and gun fanatics would like us to believe that no gun has ever been banned or can ever be banned because of the Second Amendment.
What they won’t tell you is that AR-15 style assault weapons (the favorite of mass murderers) was banned by Congress from 1994-2004.
Hmm. Did they forget about the Second Amendment? Apparently Congress decided that civilians should not own military weapons. But then all common sense was abandoned, and the murder weapon was called a “spotting” rifle. That is, if you think it takes 30 high-velocity shots to fell a deer.

The U.S. Supreme Court is the Interpretive Branch of the U.S. Government
and the phenomenon we have witnessed since the turn of the millennium is
that powerful enough special interest groups can purchase their preferred
interpretations of a written constitution of laws and have their agenda
enforced — if they have enough money and exert their power at the right
points of leverage in the Executive and Legislative Branches. That is a
distortion of the whole idea of a democratic republic but it is one U.S.
citizens will have to address while they still have the power to do so.
So I see this issue as a symptom of a much more general dysfunction
of government that the mere issue of rights that may or may not be
guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment.

“For another thing, the public is now so inundated by the rain of abuse on our university-educated teachers that — unlike every other civilized country in the world — they forget the role that academic freedom plays in conveying the truth about realities”
This quote from the link reminded me of the story I was explaining to my world history classes today. The story was that scientists like Einstein had left Germany because their peers in universities had been co-opted by the NAZI movement and the truth was becoming dangerous. It is chilling to think that today the very people who claim to be looking out for our liberties are involved in things that abridge them.

Trump Hides Under Desk After Diet Coke Can Opens Loudly
By Andy Borowitz11:50 A.M.
WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—In a moment of high drama at the White House on Tuesday morning, Donald J. Trump dove under his desk after a can of Diet Coke opened with an unexpectedly loud sound.
Moments earlier, Trump had pressed a button on his desk, summoning Vice-President Mike Pence to the Oval Office to serve him the frosty beverage.
According to one aide, when Pence opened the can, it made “an unusually loud noise,” sending Trump ducking under his desk in a millisecond.
At a news conference, minutes later, the press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, attempted to tamp down speculation that Trump had acted in a cowardly manner during the Diet Coke incident. “The President prudently repositioned himself under his desk in an aggressive crouch,” she said. “He was ready for anything.”
Pence agreed with her assessment. “The President was putting himself in a position where, if need be, he could defend the entire country against an attack,” he said. “I, for one, am honored to serve a man of such valor.”
The White House physician, Ronny Jackson, also had high praise for Trump. “He has the ability to flee a loud noise of a man half his age,” the doctor said.

Bwahaha!
Although I have increasingly come to believe that irony and satire are now almost dead, given what’s happening in this administration. They satirize themselves.

The fact that there was a ban in place on this type of weapon, is public record. The congress has the power to ban certain types of weapons from private ownership. Sawed-off shotguns, fully automatic weapons, and certain other classifications of weapons are forbidden by law. see Miller v. US (1939).
Many people (including myself) are supportive of banning certain types of weapons, as being totally inappropriate for private ownership.
None of our rights are absolute, including the right to keep and bear arms for private use.

We need to vote out the GOP before anything even has a possibility of being discussed, let alone actions to be taken. The GOP controlled FL legislature would not allow a discussion of gun control measures that could be adopted.

Exactly. Electing Democrats is the cure for most of these evils. Take heed, progressive purists. We need to go all out to elect Democrats for the next ten years. I am.

Georgia Republicans Vow to Kill Airline Tax-Cut Bill After Delta Ends N.R.A. Discount…NYT
A proposed $50 million tax break on jet fuel which would primarily benefit Delta is in jeopardy after the airline eliminated a discount for the N.R.A.
The lieutenant governor in Georgia threatened on Monday to kill a proposed lucrative tax cut for Delta Air Lines after the company eliminated a discount fare program for the National Rifle Association over the weekend.
Casey Cagle (R)Tweet: I will kill any tax legislation that benefits @Delta unless the company changes its position and fully reinstates its relationship with @NRA. Corporations cannot attack conservatives and expect us not to fight back.

Why is Delta getting a special tax break on jet fuel in the first place?

Dienne77: Corporations need more money, especially after the huge tax breaks given to the middle class.
I flew Delta a few years ago on an international flight and was served the worst meal I’d ever experienced on an airplane. They certainly aren’t putting any money into customer satisfaction.

The revocation of AR-15 ban is a symptom of the increased influence by the NRA and the right wing conservatives. The item that matters the most in politics today is money, not the safety, health and well-being of people.
