   My daughter not only loved the fancy playgrounds, she loved them for all the wrong reasons. She would creep into small protected spots where she would imagine who knows what. She would watch closely and creep out to meet the timid child she could spot a mile away as someone she could play with. Children are fascinating.

   Playing with sticks is great fun. And you can use a stick to do astrophysics. (I refer to Neil Degrass Tyson, unfortunately an enemy of public education and an astrophysicist of lesser importance, but still I like what he wrote about playing with sticks in Death By Black Hole.)

   I just received a set of headlines from The Times of NW Indiana. I scrolled down and found this post online. As a teacher, I find this absolutely repulsive. Nobody who works in a poverty level school wants to see over and over and over again how inferior these students are. Legislators who promote this are destroying all sense of worth that these kids might have. The grades will correlate with the income level and addresses of the parents. Who would want to be a kid who knows that he/she is inferior year after year?
