A group of westerners including Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, the World Bank, and Pearson invested in Bridge International Academies to supply schooling for a fee and a profit in poor countries.
It has met resistance from teachers’ unions, civic organizations, and not yet made a profit.
Now Uganda is likely to shut down the BIA schools.
Profit even more unlikely.

Well in the old days, they didn’t have this problem. The companies lobbied the US State Departmebt to invade and install a puppet regime that took orders from the USA. Oh, they also tortured, killed, and imprisoned any dissenters.

The first cohort of Bridge P7 pupils have just sat their Primary Leaving Exam (PLE) in 2017, achieving a 100% pass rate.
In addition, Bridge significantly outperformed the Ugandan national average with over 93% of pupils being placed in Division 1 or 2 compared to only 56% nationally.
What is even more striking is that these pupils come from eastern Uganda, where candidates have historically underperformed on the PLE. This year, while a respectable 87% of pupils in eastern Uganda passed the PLE, only 44% were placed in the top 2 divisions. Bridge pupils were twice as likely as their peers within their region to achieve top scores.
Girls who sat the exam at Bridge performed particularly well with 95% achieving results in Division 1 and 2.
Bridge girls’ performance equalled Bridge boys’ performance and challenged the prevailing gender performance gap. Bridge girls were almost two and a half times more likely to achieve Division 1 or Division 2 than girls across Eastern Uganda.
We are working with the Government on the licensing process and have been grateful for their support. Why would anyone seek to close schools with impressive academic results like these?

Dear Bridge Uganda,
The investors in BIA include some of the richest men in the world, like Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates. Why don’t they help public schools in Uganda instead of squeezing “profits” from some of the poorest people in the world?
Many of The readers of this blog find it odd that billionaires want to turn education—which should be free and universal—into a profit making business.
Why do Billionaires want to make a profit supplying schools to Africans?

Easily gameable test scores do not make for “impressive academic results”. The fact is that you sick people are robbing these people blind. Not sure how you can sleep at night.
Incidentally, how many students did you have to throw out to achieve that 100% pass rate? Enquiring minds want to know.
