The New York State Allies for Public Education–the state’s leaders of the opt out movement–blasted the new standards adopted by the Board of Regents as nothing more than a rebranding of the hated Common Core standards.
A few changes were made in hopes of mollifying critics, but the standards are the same old test-based accountability system. A failed system survives.
“Parents are no longer content with crumbs, baby steps, and the lesser of evils. These are our children and they are running out of time. For many it is already too late. This was a huge opportunity to put New York on the right educational path and once again we chose the path of test-based accountability and standards written without grade-level practitioner expertise. We intend to hold the Regents to their promise that they will continue to revise the Next Generation Learning Standards and add more Opportunity to Learn factors to our accountability system. And we will continue to ensure that schools pay attention to these issues and focus on providing students with what matters: a quality education and a real chance to thrive.”

The Regents will revise again….just like they revised this time. Sorry, but the only way that parents will receive the changes that they desire is for a mass pull out of children enrolled in public schools to homeschool status. That’s something that would be really hard to do and the school boards know this.

Outcomes only education is part of the “no excuses” mindset of people hell-bent on requiring forms of accountability that do not even apply to business/corporate models of operation. Good luck on getting Opportunity to Learn Standards, meaning cutting a lot of the endless and costly dog-and-pony shows foisted on teachers that are a real waste of valuable time and money, and usually insulting as well.

This focus on outcomes is an outgrowth of behaviorism. I remember way back in the early 70’s when I was doing my BA in Psychology at a school that was enamored with behaviorism and the importance placed on explaining events in terms of observable behavior. We could not make judgements on the basis of anything we couldn’t see or hear and describe in strictly behaviorist terms. I could say a child cried immediately after a block tower fell down but not BECAUSE the tower fell. Nor could I say the child was frustrated by the tower falling, but I could say the child kicked the fallen blocks. No assumptions could be made about internal mental processes.

YEP, which means that they suffer all the inherent onto-epistemological errors and falsehoods that render the usage of any results of the tests, as Wilson puts it “vain and illusory”, in other words, COMPLETELY INVALID.
But hey, let’s use falsehoods and error guide out educational system which can then only result in many harms to the most innocent of society, the students.

We are a public school of working class families, and we are lucky enough to have a library, art, music, physical education, etc. These things should be in every school.
CC has made our school stronger – no doubt about it. Not one person would enter our school before CC and think it wasn’t providing quality education for all our children.
Yet, Common Core has taken us to a higher plane. CC is just inquiry and PBL that is integrated into a curriculum. It makes a huge difference.

I hate to say it but the lackeys for the billionaires who want to break public education are not going to fundamentally change for NYSAPE or any advocate group as long as the deck is staked this way. Sure, they’ll move some of the furniture around and try to fool people into thinking they’re somewhere else. Ultimately, they know who their masters are.
