This is a must-read.
The Momma Bears of Tennessee are ferocious in protecting their children against corporate reform.
In this post, they excoriate the National PTA for selling out the interests of real parents and deferring to the powerful.
The National PTA supports Common Core and high-stakes testing; it opposes opting out of tests.
“As Momma Bears, we are beyond frustrated with TNReady testing. Every year, it’s one testing fiasco after another. Already, reports are coming in this year that the test booklets and answer sheets don’t line up. It’s just another source of frustration for our children. So, its no wonder that more and more parents are wanting to opt their children out of testing. Unfortunately, the Tennessee Department of Education refuses to recognize that parents do have opt-out rights.
“So, wouldn’t it be great if we had a state law that settled things once and for all by giving parents the explicit right to opt out of standardized testing?
“YEAH!!! Momma Bears would love to see a law giving parents explicit opt-out rights!!! But guess what?
“If you are a Momma Bear PTA leader, you are not allowed to publicly advocate for legislation allowing parents to opt out of standardized testing. That’s right. A couple of dozen uppity-ups in the National PTA all got together last year and decided that parents didn’t want the right to opt their children out of testing.
[National PTA said:] “National PTA does not believe that opting out is an effective strategy to address the frustration over testing. Mass opt-out comes at a real cost to the goals of educational equity and individual student achievement.”
“We know, parents are scratching their heads on that one!! When did dues paying PTA members vote to oppose a parent’s right to opt their children out of abusive standardized testing?
“Oh, yeah, they didn’t. Nope. There wasn’t a vote. PTA members did not approve this position statement.
“Instead, the PTA uppity-ups aligned with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to oppose parents who wanted the right to protect their children from abusive testing. While the PTA attempts some lame plattitude about supporting parental rights, it’s clear the PTA thinks that parents only get to decide what’s best for their kids when it doesn’t run afoul of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.”
Why did National PTA become cheerleaders for Common Core? Was it right after receiving a grant from the Gates Foundation in 2009 to promote Common Core?
The Mama Bears say:
“Now, we know why the PTA likes to say, “it’s not your Momma’s PTA” because our Momma’s PTA actually taught parents to advocate for the best interests of their children. Today’s PTA is nothing more than a corp-ed shill who wants to push parents right out of the decision-making process.”

Why is there even a “national” PTA? A PTA is supposed to be a very locally focused organization. Who sends money to the “national PTA”?

I believe that county/district PTA’s give a portion of their collected dues to the National PTA. I won’t join PTA because I don’t believe that the National PTA should be a corporate shill for Bill Gates and his like. If my county had a PTO which is very local, I would be glad to join. I know it sounds callous when local parents ask me to join and I tell them “No”. They try to convince me that my contribution helps to fund things in the school, but then I ask them how much of my $ getts funneled into the National PTA and they don’t really know. They also don’t seem to know that National PTA takes money from Bill Gates, supports Common Bore and high stakes testing. It used to be a great organization until it needed to have a seat at the table in DC.

I would find it interesting to learn exact statistics around how many actual Ts (Teachers) are a part of this “national” organization.

Hoping righteousness prevails and the letter goes viral. The Aspen Institute’s oligarch agenda (David Koch is on its board and Gates finances its ed programs) is not the agenda of the American people. Their plans are bad for the nation’s future, both in specific content and the goal to further concentrate wealth.

PTA, NEA, AFT, what do they all have in common? Upper management being bought off by the likes of Billy the Gates and his ilk. You know they want a “seat at the table”. Hell, they aren’t even at the table but in the ovens in the kitchen roasting til done so they can be served at the edudeformers’ table.

My exact thoughts, Duane!
When I was active in P.T.A. (the school district I worked for called it P.T.O.= Parent-Teacher Organization), I was the Teacher Parent Liaison, & it was, believe me, much more in line w/the M.B.s of TN.
Same w/our local school district (where my daughter attended, 18 yrs. ago).
Go get ’em, M.B.TN!!!

Thank God somebody said this! I’ve been saying this for years.
Remember, however, that the only way to take control of education in this country is to belong to the PTA and change it from within. I am surprised at how many school boards are split between the reformsters vs the people trying to protect the school district. It always seems to be 4 reformsters vs 3 public education people. Just one more person in whatever district could stop the policies that destroy education, and eventually, democracy.
A Parent run PTA could become a massive populace program that pushed back against these reformsters. Think of the nurses and Bernie.
So, join, take other like minded individuals, and start attending the meetings and watching the issues that are guaranteed to rile up the citizenry. Education is a microcosm that translates across the aisle. Toxins? Pesticides? Awful things in the school lunches? Healthy lunches? Truancy? Racism? Police? Special needs kids? privacy and data mining? The list is endless and all can gain traction for the eventual take over of the school board and the PTA by people interested in children’s welfare, not profiting on the children.

Is a Coffee Party starting to perk w/in the ranks of the Dems?
(I think that’s exactly what Bernie is trying to do.)
We shall see.
