I have mixed feelings about whether I should continue devoting so many posts to the multiple transgressions of Trump.
On one hand, this is a blog devoted to education.
On the other, I believe we are in the midst of a historic and unprecedented national crisis. We have elected a man who is angry, bitter, ignorant, vengeful, unstable, and tied to the white-supremacist alt-right and the Kremlin.
He has already turned our country into an international laughing stock.
He has appointed a cabinet composed mostly of incompetent, unqualified, or mean-spirited people at odds with the agency they are supposed to lead.
He refuses to divest himself of his conflicts of interest, and several of his appointees–including Betsy DeVos–have followed his example. He has demonstrated contempt for the norms of ethics and transparency in government.
What is the reason for his admiration for Putin? Putin is the richest man in the world. Does Trump owe him billions?
******
I love my country. I vote in every election. I am patriotic. I hate what Trump is doing to our country.
*********
My question to you:
Should I stick to education or continue to speak out on the issues of national significance, as well as education?
I find it hard to separate the two. Should I?

Keep speaking out, Diane. It’s important. 30 states are now “right to work”– which is really right to either freeload or be screwed. This is bigger than Trump. The Kochs and other superrich ruling class types don’t want an educated populace. Our community schools may be our last bastion of democracy. We must save them.

I don’t think there’s a hard line between the two. Betsy DeVos’ work in Michigan was primarily political and that has continued
Listen to the “conversation” she held with Trump yesterday. The first ten minutes were Donald Trump campaigning for Donald Trump by talking about Donald Trump’s achievements.
The language they use is political too. They open with “failing public schools” -this is deliberate. They want the word “failing” to become part of the phrase “public schools”
Trump does not use the phrase “public schools” unless it’s coupled with “failing”.
This is the US Department of Education doing this but it’s not “education policy”- it’s a political campaign for charters and vouchers. it’s nonsense that ed reform isn’t ‘political” – it’s HUGELY political and right now they’re campaigning for more charter schools and vouchers.
I actually accept this. I’m reconciled to the fact that ed reform is exclusively focused on charters and vouchers. What I object to is the idea they aren’t lobbying for this. They are. It’s political.

Look for yourself:
Ed reform orgs have an overwhelming bias towards positive mentions of charter schools and negative mentions of public schools- if public schools are mentioned at all.
They’re hugely influential politically and that has become the official stance of the United States. It’s political. If it were POLICY we’d occasionally hear about public schools other than as some disfavored “default” or test population to be used to compare to charter and private schools.
People talk about what they value. They don’t talk about public schools and that’s political in this context.

As you well know, education does not exist in a societal vacuum, so we cannot be concerned about education without being concerned with the rest of society’s major issues and crises.
The future of our children and grandchildren is imperiled by two existential threats most media treat rarely, if at all: nuclear weapons and climate change. Both affect education, especially its funding.
Before he left office, Obama committed the U.S. to a one trillion dollar nuclear weapons “modernization” plan over the next 30 years, which will not only waste resources needed in other societal areas such as education and slowing climate change, but would make omnicidal nuclear war more likely because it would restart the dangerous nuclear arms race and also result in more miniaturized, “accurate” weapons (as though such weapons were really needed) which would more likely be used in a crisis. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists as well as the Union of Concerned Scientists have criticized this “modernization” as dangerous and wasteful.
The Trump administration denies the dangers of climate change, but their ignorant, anti-science denials will not stop the catastrophic results of global warming, results which will coat hundreds of billions, if not trillions, of dollars to mitigate and adapt to. Again, as with the nuclear weapons budget, these funds will be taken from other programs, including education, especially with an avowed anti-public school Secretary of Education. In addition, the physical effects of climate change on the health and well-being of our children will become increasingly threatening.
So, yes, you should continue to view education in a wider, societal context, though not get swept up in the distractions of the “scandal du jour” of the Trump administration unless they directly affect education, as with the completely unqualified Betsy DeVos.

You can compare. This is the OH Dept of Education:
what do they spend most of their time on, based on the links? Public schools. Which makes sense, because that’s 90% of kids of ALL income levels.
The US Department of Education, inexplicably, is the opposite. 90/10 vouchers/charters.
I think the explanation for that is political. Which is fine, but should be admitted. Because then public school advocates can be “political” too and we can all stop pretending we’re objective scientists simply looking at “the data”.

There is a huge reason why you need to stick to education. The points about how unusual the Trump problems are, and how they over ride everything else have some merit…..but the problems faced in education are unusual and serious, and require the utmost talent and urgency for confrontation.
Bill Gates and Arne Duncan set the table for the most unimaginable bad secretary of education to be selected and confirmed. As bad as she is, the destruction of public education by schemes to privatize and exploit children as products cannot be owned solely by DeVos and the republicans. It is a bi-partisan mess, and democrats, especially the elected ones who generally do not have to deal personally with the outrage through their own children, are those most vitally in need of education and re-enforcement in efforts to restore the value of public education.
Others will deal with the overall insanity. Your job takes more talent…it is less obvious, but more important in the long run. Stick with education.
