Dana Milbank covers politics for the Washington Post. Here are his favorite signs observed at the Women’s March on Washington. By the way, more people –women and men–showed up for the March than for the presidential inauguration the previous day. There were marches all over the nation and in cities around the world, all protesting Trump’s hateful words about women and others.
Milbank wrote:
“Some were vulgar, others were angry. Most were earnest. These were my favorite signs at Saturday’s Women’s March on Washington:

Meanwhile, Trump went to visit the CIA and blamed “the media” for falsely portraying a dispute between him and the intelligence community. Lucky we have a short memory and a vast tolerance for lies.

Spicer’s presser right now is almost too funny. His anger alone tells us not to believe a thing he says.

The media will continue to be attacked. Spicer was late and unbelievably flustered.
Lawrence O’Donnell just did a wonderful job of nailing what Spicer discussed–Trump”s Inaugural crowd size versus Obama–classic mine was “bigger than his” braggadocio.
Spicer spoke of the overflowing crowd of CIA officers who gave Trump a standing ovation, as if that would take back the godawful charges Trump had hurled at the CIA.
Not a single word about the huge crowds marching today in DC, NYC, San Francisco, LA, Seattle, or crowds in London and Paris.
Trump’s neurotic drive to avoid being portrayed as a loser is pathetic and dangerous.

In reference to another post of yours, you’re right about vulgar language in public. I’ll get over my aversion to the F-word, at least insofar as resistance to T***p goes.

Thank you, too. I appreciate your observation that the chant is safe for children’s hearing. My only discomfort in DC (and earlier marches in NYC) was the profusion of signs with that friggin’ F-word on them. Perhaps I’m a prudish alte cocke who needs to loosen up and accept that linguistic taboos inevitably change.

14 Characteristics of Fascism
” 1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism – Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.
Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights – Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of “need.” The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.
Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause – The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.
Supremacy of the Military – Even when there are widespread
domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.
Rampant Sexism – The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.
Controlled Mass Media – Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.
Obsession with National Security – Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.
Religion and Government are Intertwined – Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government’s policies or actions.
Corporate Power is Protected – The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.
Labor Power is Suppressed – Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.
Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts – Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.
Obsession with Crime and Punishment – Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.
Rampant Cronyism and Corruption – Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.
Fraudulent Elections – Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections. ”

There were protests and marches in more than just the major cities. A few minutes ago, I read that more than 6,000 turned out in Walnut Creek, California (near where I live) that has a population of 66,900. Several city streets were closed for the protest and so many people ended up in the city’s civic park that the grass was trampled and churned to mud.

For the past hour I have been watching MSNBC dissect Baghdad Sean’s presser and, point-by-point, going over Donald’s lies of the past 24+ hours. As one who has criticized many aspects of this network, this has been incredibly impressive. Actual responsible, honest journalism and analysis. It makes me wonder if today’s Women’s March is already paying dividends. I’m hoping Malcolm Nance will be on soon to explain the event at the CIA.
On another note, I’m picturing the SNL writers now frantically rewriting either the opening or a later skit on the press conference. There is way too much material in there to miss this opportunity for comedy gold.

Anyone familiar with Anthony Romero, head of the ACLU?
He took over the ACLU a couple of days before 9/11, and witnessed the Twin Towers falling, as his office was located in lower Manhattan. He’s Puerto Rican and tells a story of how his father worked as a waiter, but was passed over for a better position on the grounds that his English wasn’t good enough. Ironically, the job was serving catered meals, where everyone got the same dish, so little English was needed. But his dad worked in a union, which went to bat for him and he was promoted. Romero says that things got better for his family right away, because there was enough money for extra things, and his father was more relaxed because he was better able to provide for his family. Romero has also been out as a gay man for a long time. I’m sure his life has informed his work.

Madonna said she’d thought about “blowing up the White House”, a statement that was then, condemned by a Trump spokesperson. I look forward to DeVos and the Dept. of Ed.’s condemnation of “reformers (who said), ‘We’ve got to blow up the ed schools.’ ” (Quote cited in a Philanthropy Roundtable article written by a Gates-funded external affairs manager and AEI’s Frederick Hess.)

My favorite quote is, from the police in a west coast city, “We’re marching the distance with them.” Police force members and their departments, understand that they have a lot to lose from the rule of the free-loading, fascist American wealthy.
Those in local enforcement can look to the Erik Prince’s mercenaries to see how money is siphoned off, from the forces of democracy, to pay premiums to the armed muscle of the rich.

My favorite poster was not really a poster at all . It was inscribed in Granite probably 5 stories high on the face of a building on Pennsylvania avenue
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;
or abridging the freedom of speech,
or of the press;
or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Those words are in jeopardy like they have never been before.
