Nicholas Kristof asks if any female candidate would survive if she had the same history as Donald Trump.
He poses a series of hypotheticals:
“Imagine if it were Hillary Clinton who had had five children by three husbands, who had said it was fine to refer to her daughter as a “piece of ass,” who participated in a radio conversation about oral sex in a hot tub, who rated men based on their body parts, who showed up in Playboy soft porn videos.
“Imagine if 15 men had accused Clinton of assaulting or violating them, with more stepping forward each day.
“Imagine if Clinton had held a Mr. Teen USA pageant and then marched unannounced into the changing area to ogle the young bodies as some were naked and, after doing the same thing at a Mr. USA pageant, marveled on a radio show at what she was allowed to get away with.
“Imagine if in a primary election debate Clinton had boasted that there’s “no problem” with the size of her vagina.
“Imagine if Clinton had less experience in government or the military than any person who has ever become president?
“Imagine if she had said about a man running against her in the primaries, “Look at that face! Would anyone vote for that?”
“Imagine if it were Clinton who had boasted, “I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose voters.”
“Imagine if it were Clinton who had been caught on a hot mike referring in a degrading way to men’s genitals and boasting that her prominence gave her license to grab men’s crotches.
“Imagine if she had bragged about her attempts to commit adultery — and later reportedly sought to have fired from his job the married man who resisted her seduction efforts.
“Imagine that it were Hillary Clinton who had been accused of assault by her first spouse (later recanted) and later of assault in a lawsuit by a business partner.
“Imagine if Clinton had defended herself from an accusation of molesting a young man by explaining, “He would not be my first choice, that I can tell you.”
“Imagine if Clinton had body shamed Donald Trump, saying that she had observed his rear end and concluded, “I’m not impressed, believe me.”
“Imagine if Hillary Clinton had first drawn national attention not with an idealistic speech at the Wellesley commencement, but by being sued for racial discrimination by President Richard Nixon’s administration.
“Imagine if she had later been quoted by a member of her staff as saying “laziness is a trait in blacks” and had retweeted white supremacists, including one honoring the American Nazi Party.
Imagine if it were Clinton who had gone through six bankruptcies and compiled a long record of stiffing contractors, from plumbers to painters to lawyers. …
“Imagine that, instead of releasing 39 years of tax returns, showing most recently that she had paid 31 percent of her income in federal income taxes, she had refused to release any returns — and leaked pages from 1995 returns indicated that she had paid no federal income taxes at all for years….”
What do you think? Would she still be a candidate for president?
No.
But only a delusionally narcissistic nut would think he ever had a chance to rise this far as a candidate.
He’s really carrying the crazy, assault-happy, rebellion-ready crowd.
Best thing he can do for the country is give a good excuse/cover and walk away/quit.

The saddest and most frightening part about tRump is that so many American voters chose him as the candidate. What does this say about these people?
That they’re angry with the status quo & giving the finger to politicians.
I don’t think it would even take all of this to hurt a female candidate. If a woman were to be unfaithful in her marriage, that would pretty much do it. She would be torn to shreds. We all know the labels that would be thrown at her. I’ve always wondered if we could “tolerate” an unmarried woman candidate who had a varied sexual history or marital history. Just imagine these old hypocritical men like Giuliani coming out and questioning her fitness to be president because of her marital or sexual history. Women always have to be squeaky clean and do it to perfection to be taken seriously. Yes, there is a different standard for women.
Giuliani had an adulterous affair while he was Mayor and abandoned the mother of his children. He is a good one to defend Trump’s behavior. Newt Gingrich abandoned his wife while she was hospitalized with cancer. Christie seems to be the only Trump surrogate who is not an adulterer but he is probably going to jail for his role in the Bridgegate scandal. He tried to pin it on his executive assistant, a single mother of four.
Thank you, Diane. You make my point.
I wish both the candidates would quit. One would think that Hillary would be getting 90 percent of the vote, given the repulsiveness of Trump. Had DWS and the rest of the DNC not been colluding against Sanders, I doubt we would have such a prurient presidential campaign, literally devoid of policy.
Trump belongs behind bars, without a doubt, and he will never get my vote. But Hillary, too has unclean hands in domestic and foreign policy. (I’m not even going to get into her $250K-a-pop speech to the likes of Goldman Sachs and the pro-Charter Boston Consulting Group.) It’s unfortunate that we can’t ask the millions who have died because War Hawks, such as Hillary, insist on regime change, the consequences be damned.
We (especially public education) have been burned by identity politics before (Thanks, Obama!). Now, we will be preparing to submit to the same with Hillary. Her non-committal to strong, PUBLIC K-12 schools, along with the $350,000 + donation from Pro-Charter Alice Walton reveals exactly who Hillary is as well.
More important, do you think that it’s fair to have one candidate held to a higher, or more culpable, standard than another by some news media publications with their angst and negativity solely directed toward another, even when the news media in our society is expected to maintain an objective, non-decision impacting approach to anything they produce? This election cycle clearly shows that is not the case , at least not in this particular presidential election.
The country needs fixing, but endorsing Trump to do it is like trying to fix your iPhone by dropping it in the toilet.
Good one, Akademos. Same could be said of ed reform policy.
Stan, I agree. Hillary has been held to a significantly higher standard by our entire society than Donald has been, and it’s shameful.
That said, Sarah Palin is the only person who comes close to Donald Trump’s level. She put Gabby Giffords in crosshairs on her website, remember, and shortly afterwards the congresswoman was shot. Coincidence? I think not.
Imagine if Hillary Clinton allowed 100,000 immigrant men in who believe women are chattel and who feel it is permitted by their religion to abuse and rape them. Or 200,000. It will happen. It is happening now under Obama.
Obama has deported more illegal aliens than any recent president and in the past 10 years, the number of border patrol guards has almost doubled. We are vetting the Syrian refugees before they enter, especially single males.
Not to mention that only 10,000 immigrants from Syria have come in thus far, and that Syrian Muslims in general are less extreme than Muslims from, say, Iran.
If Trump becomes the President; therefore the Commander-in-Chief of all US military forces, this God help this country and the world. We will go to another war based on lies and deceit as we did in the second Iraq war. As a retired military officer it is unsettling. If I were still a Commissioned Officer or NCO as I was I would resign my commission, retire, and get out of the service. I could not serve under a person like Trump. We have NOT had any good Commanders-in-Chiefs lately, including Reagan.
Trump is just ruthless bully, bigot, racist, sexist, narcissistic, coward who is only interested in himself and his kids. The rest of the world to go to h____ as far as he is concerned. He talks about all the great things he has done in business but it has all be done on the backs of underpaid hard working Americans and through cheating contractors and others at all levels out payments that were right due them.
Is this really the type of person who should held up to our children and grandchildren as an example of a successful person in this country. I say not.
All I can say is good luck to this country and the world if Trump gets elected.
I can’t believe people think that Trump is the only one likely to get us into wars based on lies and deceit. It’s Hillary who is rattling the saber at Russia.
From big “dummy” (Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 2001 and the John Bates Clark Medal in 1979) Joe Stiglitz: “Clinton is one of the most qualified and well prepared presidential candidates that the United States has had, while Trump is one of the least qualified and worst prepared. Moreover, Trump’s campaign has survived behavior by him that would have ended a candidate’s chances in the past.”
But what does he know, he’s just a tool of the 1% and a sellout. NOT!

When culling opinions on the candidates, I do choose Nobelist professor of economics at Columbia, Joe Stiglitz, over someone who only identifies on this blog site as Joe.
Stiglitz wrote the seminal book, Freefall, on the crash of 2008, and followed it with the explanation of how the continual redistribution of wealth upward has killed the middle class, with his book, On Inequality.
Suggest Joe whomever you are, you try reading these two books before calling Stiglitz a “big dummy”. Then as additional reading, try to understand his book Euro published in 2012 which presciently explains the lead up to Brexit this year, changing the face of the European continent and the world economy.
You certainly should educate yourself before name calling one of the most revered, respected, and knowledgeable economists in the world. What is your background that proves why anyone should listen to you?
I use these Stiglitz works as core books in teaching courses on The History of Economics.
Joe…if I read you wrong, and you are merely being tongue in cheek, I apologize.
Ellen, I am being big tongue in cheek. I guess sarcasm, irony and snark do not translate well in comments. I’m a big fan of Joe Stiglitz, of course he’s no dummy. My point was, that Joe S is supporting Hillary and does not seem to think she is a war mongering demon.
Whew…I feel better…thanks for clarifying.
Maybe it’s not male vs. female. Maybe it’s that people expect the Democratic candidate to be half-way sane and knowledgeable, whereas we expect the Republicans to be nutcases. After all, Sarah Palin’s nuttiness didn’t seem to hurt her any more than Trump’s nuttiness has hurt him.
Which, Dienne, is a commentary on the American voters who support both Palin and tRump. They are a scary group. Neither sanity nor intelligence seems to factor in with this cabal of insurrectionists.
Hillary would be burnt toast if she did what Donald Trump has done and still does, but then almost every candidate male or female would be destroyed by the media and the mobs if they acted like The Donald. The real question here is why a large segment of the population is giving Trump a pass and supporting this racist, sexist, narcissistic, psycho serial liar? These people deserve to be labeled the Deplorables.
Yep. Exactly.
Without doubt, Lloyd, tRump supporters are deplorables. But why are there so many who go along with all this disgusting behavior? And how will they act when they lose this election? He is urging revolution, and that seems to be bloody, violent, revolution. Our nation has laws about insurrection, so why aren’t our representatives enforcing them against tRump who is shouting out for insurrection?
Ellen,
That bothers me too. If he loses, the vote is rigged. If he wins, he will put his opponent in jail. He is undermining our system of government, sowing hatred and distrust. That’s the thinking of a would-be dictator. I think he never took civics or government classes. Even if he loses, it is frightening to think that 40% of the electorate share his fascist views. He boasted of criminal activity (sexual assault), yet his supporters forgive him. Someone told me this is anti-bullying month. Trump gives permission to bullies to be bullies and to racists to express their racism. He poisons the body politic.
I try to imagine how Hillary will endure yet another 90 minutes of bullying and slander. This is an endurance test, for her and for the rest of us.
This election will surely be remembered as the most disgusting national political contest in our history.
The big Baby–the Dirty Old Man–will whine, “she said it first.” He has a remarkable capacity for projecting his feelings of hatred and racism onto her.
I read a Pew Research report that said 55 percent of the people who say they will vote for Trump are not voting for Trump but voting against Hillary. That means the deplorables are divided into two categories. Those who are proud bullies and racists and those who are embarrassed bullies and racists who won’t admit they are, so they find a way to justify their votes with this twisted logic.
The faction that is the most dangerous are the white supremacists who are proud of being racists and bullies instead of uncomfortable with it.
If 42 percent of voters vote for Trump, that means the dangerous faction could be as many as 23.5 (7.4 percent of the total population) million Americans. I think on election night, I’ll be loading all my weapons and have them out and ready to use if Trump’s lunatic fringe, the hard-core supporters riot and come anywhere near my house. I live in an community with a large minority population so I won’t be alone in fighting back. We will be the rainbow coalition standing up to fight Trump’s anemic, pale fringe of haters.
This just hit my inbox…from UltraViolet, which specializes in issues of abuse against women….I edited out their requests for donations….let’s help them by calling NBC and MGM and demanding they release all the Trump tapes!!!!
“For years, NBC hid the infamous Access Hollywood video with Donald Trump bragging to Billy Bush about sexually assaulting women.
Now NBC and MGM are refusing to release footage from The Apprentice that is even worse, according to multiple people who have seen it.1
Meanwhile, Trump and his campaign are viciously attacking the women he sexually assaulted, calling them liars and worse.
By continuing to hide these tapes, NBC and MGM, the studio that now owns them, are aiding and abetting Trump’s efforts to silence his victims.
We’re flooding NBC and MGM with phone calls and running airplane banner ads over their corporate headquarters in Los Angeles demanding they release the tapes.
The only way the public ever saw that awful Access Hollywood video was because someone leaked it to The Washington Post. And the tapes from The Apprentice reportedly include clips of him using the n-word.
Why are NBC and MGM protecting Trump? Maybe it’s because Trump has been a cash cow for NBC and MGM for years, first as a reality TV star and then as a political candidate, and now they’re trying to protect themselves from embarrassment.
But in just the last few days, nine (as of today there are 12…ellen) women have come forward to share their stories of being attacked by Trump. And Trump has responded by calling their stories “complete fiction.” He’s even said the women can’t be telling the truth because they’re not attractive enough for him to have sexually assaulted them.
By keeping these tapes hidden from the public, NBC and MGM are helping Trump smear these women by concealing evidence that would corroborate their stories. (and they are aiding and abetting Trump’s further calls for insurrection by his supporters…ellen)
Trump is a sexual predator (and assault is a felony…ellen) who could become President of the United States, and NBC and MGM have an obligation to stop hiding this information from the voters. But with just over three weeks till Election Day we need to turn up the pressure.
Thanks for speaking out.

Maybe Hillary should allow Michelle Obama to step in as her second and take her place in the last debate. That would throw DT into lunatic dizzy land. If the sniffling is caused by nerves and not cocaine, I think the sniffling would double, triple.

Even better…she could step aside and make Michelle Obama the Dem candidate for Prez.
Today’s multitude of morning shows did Hillary little good with Kaine speaking for her…and Pence almost made me lose my breakfast. Only Biden was worth listening to and he too would make a better Dem candidate for Prez.
Michelle Obama for President in the next election or the one following that. I’m all for that.
The LA Times today did a full rundown of Hillary’s Wikileak problems…and amongst those mentioned, they reported that between Hillary and Bill speaking to Wall Street, they netted about $27 Million in 2015 – 2016. Her advisors did NOT want Bill to make that last Wall Street speech but she fought them on that.
It is apparent that these two candidates will continue to amaze us to the bitter end, with their bad decisions. But again, I am voting for Hillary, not because she is a woman, but because she is running against a narcissistic madman who is yearning to emulate his hero, Putin.
BTW..re.Petreaus…it was worth paying close attention to him.
If you missed the actual televised debate, SNL did a parody of it. Apparently T-Rump was not impressed with Alec Baldwin’s impression of him – tweeting that it was ‘Boring and unfunny’. He has called for the show to be canceled. I haven’t heard what Mrs. Clinton thought of Kate McKinnon’s portrayal of her.
I think what really bothered the Donald was not the Alec Baldwin bit, but the one where the women in his life say they are sick of his boorishness and Tiffany says “from now on, don’t call me Tiffany Trump, call me Tiff Maples.”
The fact 42% of Americans still support Trump is probably the same percentage that cannot find Washington D.C. on a map. Hillary called Trump supporters a basket of deplorables. Why is it when she tells the truth, Republicans attack her?
Why? Republicans would attack Hillary if she hiccuped.
She used an odd metaphor or plural noun. What’s with the “basket”? That racists and sexists are deplorable is beyond question.
With Trump now inciting violence and trying to undermine our fragile democracy to save his ego, we should question the character and judgement of the Republican leaders still supporting him, including Ryan, Pence, and Ohio’s Senator Portman.
“The fact 42% of Americans still support Trump. . . ”
C’mon VM, you aren’t throwing that figure out there as meaning anything are you???
“What ifs” = Who “gives a shit” (paraphrasing one D. Coleman).
